THE PARISH OF SALFORD PRIORS Incorporating Abbots’ Salford, Dunnington, Iron Cross, Pitchill, Rushford, Salford Priors and The Bevingtons.
Introduction to Salford Priors
Salford Priors Parish Council is pleased and honoured to have produced this new booklet introducing our parish to existing households and newcomers to our parish. We have developed this Introduction Booklet for all residents new or old to help you find your way round the village and feel part of your community. The Introduction Booklet also includes a lot of information about local village groups and organisations that always welcomes new members and volunteers.
If you have recently moved into our parish we hope you will settle quickly and happily into your new home and your new community. I am sure that your neighbours will be only too happy to help if you need pointing in the right direction.
Please also feel welcome to call me or any of your Parish Councillors if you have any specific questions. All our numbers can be found on our website www.salfordpriors.gov.uk which is updated on a regular basis to include agendas, minutes of meetings and community news.
I hope that residents new and old find this booklet useful and that it will help you settle in to our happy and active community. We want to make sure that this booklet is as useful as it can be to new residents so please let us know if you think it could be improved in any way.
Chairman Salford Priors Parish Council
Introduction to Salford Priors
The history of Salford Priors can be traced back to Roman times when the ford here enabled traders to cross the Avon with salt from Droitwich, giving the village the name ‘Saltford’. Initially owned by Evesham Abbey, Salford split into Salford Minor which became known as Abbot’s Salford and Salford Major which was owned by Lady Godiva. When ownership passed to Kenilworth Priory in 1122, it became known as Salford Priors.
At the dawn of the Victorian era it was an important staging post for passing stagecoach trade on the route from Evesham to Birmingham, Coventry and Leicester. Many stopped at the old Queens Head public house at Iron Cross. Perkins Foundation Schools in Salford Priors and Dunnington were both built at this time and school attendance became compulsory around 1879.
Peace was shattered by the Great War of 1914-1918 in which 26 men from Salford Priors lost their lives. During the second World War, the Women's Land Army were based at Park Hall and many of the women stayed on to marry local men when the war was over. The Memorial Hall on School Road was opened on 6th April 1957 in memory of the men from the village who had been killed.
The introduction of steam engines into agriculture by Benjamin Bomford (now known as Alamo) changed the local landscape from small to large fields. Steam had an impact on transport with the arrival of the railway, which served Salford
Priors for nearly a century, providing a passenger service to Stratford, Evesham and Birmingham and a means of transporting the fruit and vegetable crops. The line was closed in 1963. The old station building can still be seen in Station Road and the derelict signal box is visible adjacent to
the A46 bypass. The A46T trunk road was opened in August 1995 and relieved the village of heavy through traffic.

Salford Seven Neighbourhood Development Plan for the future of the residents of the seven settlements of the
Parish of Salford Priors.
The Localism Act, which received its Royal Assent on 15 November 2011 'sets out a series of measures with the potential to achieve a substantial and lasting shift in power away from central government and towards local
people.' (Greg, Clark MP Minister of State for Decentralization).
Neighbourhood Planning is a new way for communities to decide the future of the places where they live and/or work. Where they want new homes, shops, offices. What they should look like. When they should be built.
The Salford Seven Neighbourhood Development Plan will influence the future of Salford Priors Parish, including Abbots Salford, The Bevingtons, Dunnington, Iron Cross, Pitchill, Rushford and Salford Priors – homes, jobs, transport, education sports and social facilities, the natural environment etc, so it is important that ALL participate to ensure the future of the Parish is what the community want it to be.
The vision:
'By 2031, the Parish of Salford Priors will be a safe, thriving rural community with a strong voice, which conserves its natural environment
and historic character. Growth in population and enterprise will be diverse, sympathetic, well-designed and sustainable.'
Where are we with our plan
Our plan has been examined by an independent examiner and is now with Stratford District Council who will decide early next year (2017) if it can go to Referendum. This will be your chance to vote for the plan to be adopted and used to determine future planning in our Parish.

Christmas Tree Light Switch-On
In 2014 the Parish Council agreed to fund a Christmas Tree for 3 years on the triangle at the junction of Station Road and School Road.
On Saturday November 29th the first Christmas Tree light switch-on event was held. Catering of hot dogs, mince pies, soup and mulled wine was organised by Mr and Mrs Seville and Mr and Mrs Greatrex. A firework display courtesy of Ultimate Fireworks accompanied the switch-on. The first event was very well supported and raised £425 for the defibrillator fund.
The second switch-on event took place on Saturday 28th November and again was well supported. As the previous year catering was organised by Mr and Mrs Seville and Mr and Mrs Greatrex and once again Ultimate Fireworks provided the firework display. Some local residents entertained us with carols. A total of £400 was
donated to the Bidford Dementia Café.
The Christmas tree has become a popular focal point when entering the village.
It is the aim of the Parish council to make this a permanent event with the formation of an Independent Christmas Tree Light Switch-on Committee.
Volunteers are needed to take this special event forward.

Royal British Legion
The Royal British Legion (often known as the “Legion”) is the UK's leading Service charity (UK Registered Charity No 219279). If you are serving, have served or are the dependent or carer of someone who has served in the UK's Armed Forces, then you may be eligible for our help. We can offer financial aid in an urgent crisis, help homeless ex-Service people get back on their feet, advise on compensation claims, offer careers
advice for those looking to make a fresh start after leaving the Forces, arrange home or hospital visits and much more.
Apart from a short break in the 1940’s, there has been an active Branch of the British Legion in Salford Priors since 1926. The Branch organises Coffee Mornings, occasional Away Days and participation in the Village Fete however the main activity of the Branch throughout this time has been to raise money for the Poppy Appeal. Every November, the Branch’s members are supplemented by a team of volunteer Poppy Collectors from all across the Parish and together we undertake the traditional house-to-house collections.
The 2017 Royal British Legion Subscription, including Branch Membership, is just £17 per year and is collected annually by Direct Debit. Gift Aid is available too so it can be tax efficient for both the subscriber and for the Legion.
For more information about seeking support from the Legion, to join the Salford Priors Branch or simply to offer to help with the annual Poppy Collection, please contact the Branch Secretary, Iain Ballantyne at 4 Ban Brook Copse, Salford Priors, WR11 8GW (telephone 01789 778334; e-mail [email protected]). The Legion’s main web site can be found at www.britishlegion.org.uk and Membership is open to everyone with an interest in supporting the Royal British Legion, it is not restricted to ex-Service personnel.
