October 26, 2011 The Hardy
Heartline
Last night I was watching the Rangers play, enjoying the national pastime.
I have to tell you that I don’t watch much baseball on TV and even when
I try it usually turns into a nice long nap. Yet, last night was different.
There was something different about the urgency and the finality and the stakes that were on the table for both
teams. The air was charged, and it was a sell-out crowd in Arlington, Texas. It is amazing to think that a small
thing like expectation can change a lazy summer game into a socially charged event of the season.
This month we begin the supercharged season of Thanksgiving. However, it is easy for us to spend all our time
eating all of the great food on the table and spend only a minimal time being thankful. I wonder what would
happen if we placed larger expectations on being thankful. Would it change our lives from uneventful to some-
thing more?
Psalm 100:3-4 says:
3 Know that the LORD is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
You know it is easy to find ways to pass time. It’s also easy to miss that the God who made us is wrapped up in
everything we do. If we spend time expecting to find God in every breath we take and movement we make, we
would easily find that most of life is about being thankful. A life filled with that kind of expectation doesn’t have
much use for passing time but rather it is time spent entering his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with
praise. I couldn’t think of anything more exciting.
Blessings,
Preston
FROM MICAH In Hebrews 12 Paul writes, “Since we are receiving a kingdom that can-
not be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe”. We have
received, through Jesus, a kingdom that is sure, solid, and cannot be shaken. What a wonderful word
picture to remind us of the awesome power of Christ and His work in our lives. Notice that Paul im-
mediately follows this with the admonition, “Let us be thankful”. In this month of Thanksgiving, it is important for
us to take time and consider the blessings God has poured into our lives and be thankful to Him.
But Paul doesn’t stop there. He continues with another admonition, to “worship God acceptably with reverence
and awe”. The Bible teaches us in the Old and New Testaments that thanksgiving and worship are connected. So
as we think about being thankful this month, let us also find time to worship God who provides for us through His
grace and mercy.
Mark your calendars….December 17 is our Christmas program, “The Sounding Joy”. We will have a live or-
chestra and a full choir.
If you would like to make a donation to help cover the cost of the orchestra members, please note that on your
check and send it to the church office. Thank you!
Have you considered joining our choir? We have several new members at Hardy and we would like to extend a
welcome to ALL members to join our choir which meets on Wednesday nights at 7:00.
We’re the church

Hardy Turkey Dinner News
The Hardy United Methodist Women, with the help of the United Methodist Men and every other
member of Hardy UMC, will hold the annual Turkey Dinner this year on November 10, 2011. The
dinner will be a week long affair beginning with refrigerator and kitchen clean-up on Monday and
ending Friday with another kitchen clean-up. In between will be many opportunities to work.
Beginning on Tuesday at 8:00 am, we will be roasting turkeys. On Wednesday morning, again 8:00 am we will
have our traditional chopping of celery, nuts, etc. On Wednesday afternoon we will be carving turkeys. Men, this
will be a great opportunity for you to work. Bring your electric knives and cutting boards and help carve. Thursday,
starting at 8:00 am, will be a full day of cooking, serving and cleaning-up. It would be great to have a fresh crew
for clean-up coming in about 6:30 pm. So if work has kept you from helping during the day, this would be a good
opportunity for you.
UMW members remember that you are expected to bring both cornbread (for the dressing) and pound cakes.
There will be the Sweet Shop that traditionally has been a great money raiser. The more goodies donated the
more money we will be able to make, so please be generous with your donations for the Sweet Shop.
The proceeds from Turkey Dinner allow the United Methodist Women to make our yearly Pledge to Missions and
also contribute to Community Meal and UM Army. It can only be a success with the help of the whole church, but it
is especially important that UMW put forth the lion’s share of the effort as this is OUR event. Please put this week
(November 4-11) on your calendar and be ready for a few days of hard, rewarding work and great fellowship.
If you would like more information on how you can help, contact Mary Spencer at (903) 671-3622.
Director of Kitchen Ministries
For those who have attended the Wednesday night dinners or the special “Dinnertainment” evening or perhaps the
beautiful United Methodist Women’s brunch, it will come as no surprise what a gem Hardy has in Sonny McBay.
Sonny was instrumental in creating the well-received Wednesday night dinner fellowship. He presently determines
the dinner menu, purchases the food, directs the preparation and supervises the clean-up. In his new position as
Hardy’s Director of Kitchen Ministries, he will coordinate the use of the kitchen for all activities, will be available to
assist the many groups which utilize it, and will make sure the kitchen is well-stocked and the equipment is func-
tional.
Not surprisingly, he also has many innovative ideas for the future. With his track record, we anticipate great things
ahead. Sonny welcomes the opportunity to work with individuals and groups, and he is just an email or phone call
away.
Mission Moment
As part of our outreach here at Hardy, our congregation
collects supplies for the Child Protective Service’s RAINBOW
ROOM. These items help the CPS caseworkers meet the
critical needs of abused and neglected children in our town. Collection bins are located at each of the side
entrances by the balcony staircase.
For the month of November, we want to help “Share the Warmth” by collecting clothing and accessories for cooler
weather. This includes gloves, socks, windbreakers, underwear, sweaters, etc. Help us make a difference.
Angel Tree Project Once again Hardy is participating in the Angel Tree Ministry which provides Christmas gifts to
children whose parents are in prison. Please watch for details next month as we find out how many children we will
be helping through this worthwhile program. Volunteers will also be needed to help deliver presents.
A Thanksgiving Thank You from the Children's Department
At Hardy Memorial, we are truly blessed with so many wonderful Sunday School teachers and volunteers
within the Children's Department. As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, on behalf of all the children of the
church, thank you for giving of your time and your talents. You truly bless the lives of the children of our church
and you are truly appreciated!

BIBLE IN 90 DAYS
On the evening of Sunday, November 20, the “graduates” of the Bible in 90 Days study will celebrate with a dinner
in the Fellowship Hall. Hardy has beaten many of the odds as to numbers “staying the course.” Of the 130 partici-
pants who initially began the study, Hardy will celebrate 100 graduates. This is quite an accomplishment requiring
individual determination, discipline, and sometimes endurance but proving to be a blessing for all.
Dinner will begin at 5:00pm and will culminate with the group reading the final chapter of the book of Revelation
together.
A special thanks goes to leaders Barbara and Carol Means, Paul Miller, Jane Walker, Kristie Wright, Bob Bell, Lisa
McBay, Don Keasler, Randy Moore, Jerry Black, and Greg Phillips.

we will move inside to a classroom. For detailed information, please contact Zoe Nakashian at 585-461-4792 or
