The New Nebraska Families Collaborative
“The potential of the average person is like a huge ocean unsailed, a new continent unexplored, a world of possibilities waiting to be
released and channeled toward some great good.”–Brian Tracy

Dear Friend,
Thank you for helping make last year one of our most exciting yet. Nebraska Families Collaborative served more families than ever before (5,470 to be exact) and made the decision to rebrand ourselves as PromiseShip.
“Promise” not only represents potential for the future, but the promise we see in everyone to overcome challenges and be successful. “Ship” is a play on words that describes our desire to help families navigate rough waters and reach a positive state of being.
Through this report, we invite you to see how the words and numbers are all underpinnings of children and families living happier and healthier lives. Families who you helped be families.
As we sail into the new year under the PromiseShip flag, we thank you for your steadfast friendship and support.
Kind Regards,
Dave Newell, CSW, ACSWPresident & CEO

Family PreservationChildren do best when they are able to safely stay with their family. PromiseShip was formed with the goal of preserving families by keeping them from being separated in the first place. Last year, we served 2,540 youth in their family home.
Family ReunificationWhen children are separated from their parents, reunification is the goal. Until then, foster and kinship care ensure stability. Last year, we served 1,135 youth through foster care and 1,731 through kinship care.
Forever FamiliesWhen a child cannot safely return to their parents, adoption becomes the goal. We carefully match each child with loving people and work with them to create strong family relationships that will last forever. Last year, 224 children were adopted with our support.
Prevention ServicesOnce a permanent solution is in place, families are encouraged to participate in our ongoing prevention services, previously known as aftercare services, designed to help maintain safety, permanency and well-being. Each year, on average 850 families participate in our prevention services.

A defining feature of family is unconditional love. For Louisette, her actions to provide her grandson, Cyrvan, life-saving treatment speak louder than a simple
“I love you” could ever convey.
Cyrvan was born in the central African country of Gabon with a genetic disorder that keeps him confined to a wheelchair. Four years ago, Louisette and his uncle brought him to Omaha to receive cutting-edge treatment. Unfortunately, his mother and sisters had to stay in Gabon, so Louisette took over every aspect of his care.
In Gabon, Louisette lost two of her sons to the same genetic disorder Cyrvan has. Now that their family has access to treatment, she’ll move mountains to ensure Cyrvan gets it. She’s endured the hardships of a language barrier, her own health issues, unsteady income and separation from her family to care for him. Even though she’s a fierce advocate for her grandson, Louisette needed a few tools to overcome these obstacles.
With PromiseShip’s prevention services, she’s been able to access a caseworker to coordinate Cyrvan’s transportation to school and treatment, facilitate translation services, and much more.
It hasn’t been an easy transition, but it’s one that champions the strength of love. With translation help from Cyrvan’s uncle, Louisette says, “I miss my daughter and granddaughters, but the most important thing is making sure Cyrvan gets treatment. I can always go back to Gabon, but he can’t. So, the most important thing right now is him.”
This story exemplifies our mission to help families be families, no matter the obstacles. Through Louisette’s loving, hard work, Cyrvan can have the childhood he deserves.

LEADERSHIPOur role in the community is a challenging yet rewarding one. To do our job right, we need to be leaders in everything we do. Here are a few new initiatives we are working on to benefit the children and families we serve.
COA Reaccreditation
One of only four organizations nationwide to have earned a joint accreditation from the Council on Accreditation for Network Administration and Case Management for child welfare services in the same site, serving the same community. Accreditation holds us to a higher standard of quality.
Recruitment and Retention We ended the year with a 99.34% state mandatory caseload ratio. This means only one of our 152 family permanency specialists was exceeding caseload limits. This success is due to close partnerships with universities, great benefits and an innovative and positive work culture.
Masters in Social Work Program Teaming with UNO’s Grace Abbott School of Social Work, DHHS and Project Harmony, we are able to provide a tuition-free, online master’s degree program. This offers employees an avenue for professional growth as well as enhancing the quality of support for families.
New Technology Adopted cutting-edge technology and systems to enhance our services resulting in improvements to staff retention, prevention of child maltreatment recurrences, and reduction of re-entry rates for children and their families.
