Treesconsistoftwo(2)typesofwood:heartwoodand sapwood.Heartwoodisoldgrowthfoundinthecore ofthetree,andsapwoodisnewergrowthfoundinthe outerperimeterofthetree.Heartwoodistypically darkerandtransitionstoalightercolorasitmoves towardthesapwood.

Cabinetrycomponentpiecesarerandomlyselected fromheartwoodandsapwoodtocreateamixor blendofmaterialtoshowcasethebeautyofthewood andpreventthefinishedcabinetryfromlooking artificialormonochromatic.Thedoorshownattheleft isabeautifulexampleofthemarriageofthese hardwoods.

Graininwoodiscausedbyannualgrowthrings,woodrays,andothercellularstructurescontainedwithinthewood.Grainrunsvertical,orinthedirectionofheightgrowthandisusedtodescribealignmentandvariouspatternsthatmayappearinyourhardwood.

Themostcommongrainpatternsare:fineorstraight,cross,wavyorcurlyandarch.Injurytoatreecanaffectgrainpatternscreatingveryuniqueandexquisitepatterns.Injurymaybetheresultofstress,weather,birdsorinsects.Thetreesreactionistoproduceawartcoveringcalledburltoprotectitself.Itisfromtheburlthatweseeunusualgrainpatternslikefiddleback,tigerstripeandcrossfire.Anyorallofthesepatternsmaybepresentinyourcabinetrymakingittruly,oneofakind!
