The Messenger
~ A Communication Ministry of Salem United Church of Christ ~
April, 2019
Volume 65, Issue 4
We are God’s children called to seek, share, teach, and continue to experience the Word of God.
In the Waiting Read Psalm 62
In this season of Lent we wait with anticipation. How we wait has a great
influence on our journey. My heart is so ready for the next great victory; even
that victory that is the forever victory, yet we are called to waiting in the journey
given to us. I challenge myself and all of us to be “all in” on what we are seeking.
Our lives should not vacillate between the seeking of darkness and light. We are
called to be children of the light! Surely all of us abhor the pain and strife of
brokenness of every kind: illness, accident, poverty, calamity, severed
relationships and much more. We all know there is quite enough darkness in our
world already! By our thoughts, words, and deeds we either add to the darkness
already there or bring light. May we carefully attend to our lives; for we can so
readily rail against the darkness as we bring judgment and vengeance in self-
righteous ways, adding all the more darkness to a world that has quite enough.
We should wait with faith as people with eternity written on our hearts. This past
Thanksgiving season I was with family on a beach in Galveston Texas, awed by
the immensity of God’s handiwork. Even as I spoke to God about His wonder, I
know I have little begun to see the wonder of God’s love and creative work. I
wrote deeply with my finger into the sand these words, “John was here.” I stood
with bare feet and rolled up pants legs in that November sea. I watched as each
wave took a bit more of my writing away. In just a few minutes what I had
written had vanished, yet the eternity God has put in my heart says it yet remains
and always will! Even today God knows the exact place where I wrote my name!
Do we wait with the knowledge that goodness and glory brought to God can
never be erased? Do we wait expecting goodness even when we don’t understand
how it will come? What brought Mary to the tomb of Jesus that early
resurrection morning? There may have been more than one reason, but
somewhere in Mary is this hope beyond hope! This is not over! God has not yet
spoken His powerful word of victory over the present darkness! Do we, in the
darkness and shadows of this present life, wait with anticipation of God’s
victory? Even before this long winter began to yield to spring, my eye carefully
looked for robins and the first irises to pop through the cold soil of the flower
bed. I rejoiced a bit over a week ago when I noticed that subtle bit of green in
the otherwise sleepy brown thatch of winter grass. Friends, it is never a matter
of “if” with God; it is only a matter of “when.” God is glorified as we wait with
faith, reflecting the light of Christ in every place and time. May we pray for
goodness as we bring light to each moment we live, and may we wait in faithful
expectation. Whatever is good and seems dead, gone, or diminished, know that God will yet have His say. I am
convinced that nothing that is truly good will ever be lost. God is glorified in our faithfulness and will surprise us
with His victory.
Rejoice in our risen Savior!
Pastor John

“The Living Last Supper”
“The Living Last Supper” will be presented at our Maundy Thursday service by the Chancel Choir and men from
our congregation.
For centuries before Jesus came to earth, each year when the spring harvest began, the Jewish people were
instructed to remember the emancipation of Israel from slavery in Egypt by observing Passover. Ritual prayers
of blessing were learned and recited. All leaven was removed from the house, a specific set of foods was prepared
on dishes used only for this occasion, and a ceremony was performed by each family through which the story of
the Exodus was retold. The instructions for the Passover Feast were given to Moses before the Ten
Commandments! It pre-dates all other feasts, and its importance was made clear when Jesus chose to celebrate
this feast during His last hours.
The Passover Supper is rich with beauty and symbolism, but its significance is lost to many Christians today. The
unleavened bread represents the sinless Savior; it is broken and half hidden away, representing His death and
burial; it is later uncovered and eaten. Many families involve the children in the story by making a game of hiding
and searching for the bread. The Matzo bread used for this ceremony is grilled, so it has stripes that remind us
that Jesus was beaten; it has holes in it, which remind us that He was pierced. When Jesus says to His disciples,
“This is my body,” it gives the bread a whole new level of meaning. The blood of a lamb figures heavily into this
ceremony as well. In Egypt, the Israelites painted their door posts with the blood of a spotless lamb.
When the angel of death saw this, he “passed over” those homes and spared the first-born from the last of the ten
plagues-the plague of death. When John refers to Jesus as “---the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the
world,” it becomes clear that the Israelites had been presenting a picture of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection
for 1500 years before His birth by celebrating Passover!
“The Living Last Supper” is a 35-minute program for Maundy Thursday, Lent, or any communion service. It
incorporates the DaVinci painting as a model for the set and is also meant to present a true picture of the Last
Supper, which was a celebration of the Passover Feast. When God called these twelve men to be His disciples
and apostles and to establish the New Testament Church, He chose flawed individuals, people just like you and
me, men who were not saints or even finished products, but works in progress; men whose qualities needed to be
honed, molded and channeled in positive ways. It is my prayer that God will use this production to remind all of
us that He is not yet finished with any of us, and that every one of us is guilty of denying and betraying Him. The
most important lesson of this presentation, however, is that His love and mercy covers every contingency, and
His will is perfect even if it is difficult to understand. Just as these twelve exemplary men had a mission given to
them to build the New Testament Church on a foundation of love and grace, we are also charged to continue that
mission, to love one another and to share the good news of the Messiah. ~ Ruth Elaine Schram ~
Every Generation Suggested Song: Dreamer by Martin Garrix and Mike Yung
Every generation has their
“thing.” Something from their
childhood that they will
remember forever. The Rubix
cube, Stretch Armstrong, a
Chatty Cathy doll, Gameboys.
And I bet right now you are all
smiling as you remember your
favorite toy as a kid.
Every generation is also known
for what they did. In the 50s and
60s, we had the civil rights
movement. In the 60s and 70s,
we had women’s rights activists.
Every generation also has their
negative aspects. No matter what
the year was, historically, there
has been a disconnect between
the traditions of our elders and
the new ideas of the youth.
Flappers in the Roaring
Twenties for example, were seen
as young, party girls, going
against everything society
thought women should be and
do. Currently, we seem to be
disconnected about pretty much
everything. School, technology,
fashion, choices, health.
Every generation thinks they
know best. The youth see the
adults as not changing with the
times. Adults see youth as
disrespectful and ungrateful.
Every generation has made an
impact, however. Those crazy
flappers from the 1920s
redefined the roles of women in
our society. The civil rights and
feminists movement provide the
path to the equal rights
conversations and battles we are
still facing today. Today, our
youth are in this technology
world, which we don’t entirely
understand right now. We don’t
know what this will lead to. But
I can guarantee you, it will
change the world, if it hasn’t
already.
Every generation is filled with
dreamers. Young people who
envision the world differently.
People who want to see the
world change into something
better. As a generation, people
come together to make the world
a place of love and hope.
Every generation needs their
faith. Dreamers need something
to believe in. When our youth
are figuring out how they will
impact this world we live in,
they need God, their parents, and
role models in their life to show
them how powerful their faith
can be. Future generations will
look to our generation right now
as the start of...something.
Whatever we do, whatever we
create, whatever we say, will
change the future.
Every generation needs other
generations. We cannot change
the world without each other,
good, bad, and ugly. We need
each other to keep us dreaming.
We need each other for love,
hope, forgiveness.
Every generation needs love.

Volunteering at the Community Hope Center (CHC)…..by Larry McGee I’d like to say a few words about anyone who wants to or has been thinking about volunteering their time at the CHC. I have been volunteering more now since I’ve retired, and I believe CHC is very dedicated in helping people that are in need. People who volunteer there are very caring and willing to help others. Before CHC opens in the morning, there is someone who goes to a designated area to pray. There is a prayer room for folks to go to and have a Pastor pray with/for them. I have been working in the donation area where people bring household and clothing items in. Some people donate 1-2 bags of items, where some folks may donate an entire van full of items. CHC feeds people lunch on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. They do not serve lunch on Thursday, but are open for donations. I’ve observed people walking out with a grocery cart full of food, depending on their needs. They have different areas to work in…serving food in the lunch room, handing out food, organizing donations, some work in the warehouse, or helping when donations are brought in. In the summer they put a garden out with fresh vegetables to give away as well. CHC also has a place where someone may stay for the night. There are beds and showers that are separated for men and women. When volunteering I have a good feeling of helping others, which is what God wants us to do as Christians. If you’d like to help and serve people in need for four hours on the last Friday of the month, please join me. CHC would be glad to see you. ---- Larry McGee

Justin Bonnell came to discuss the Angel Closet project. Angel closet - collects money and items for children who are in needy in our schools. This could be supported by just the church, the community, or we could partner with the Baptist Church, or Ministerial Alliance, or Grantfork UCC since they are in the same school district? Fund instead of closet? Schools could use money to purchase whatever is needed for students in need. Can this be a fund kept at the church and used when needed? Becca talked with nurse at HMS. Our Angel Fund is district wide, which would include Alhambra and Grantfork schools. Should we still start a fund here at church to collect donations to go towards school Angel Fund?
Pregnancy Kits - donation box in the Narthex; put kits together on March 31st; Denny will make announcement Other ideas: April - talk with Alhambra Care about needs they have for our project in April. Justin suggested a vegetable garden. Work day to set up garden end of April - Collection for donations? Historical Committee
Please stop by the display cabinet to see our display of the Last Lord’s Supper. We have gathered items from members (on loan – thank you very much) and from a different location in the passageway and the Memorial Parlor (thank you Pastor John and Carol Reckman for permission to move them). In addition, we have photos of members of Salem when they portrayed the Living Lord’s Supper. One photo was included in the 1985 church directory but we do not know the exact year it was presented. If anyone can identify the members in any of our photos, please let a committee member know. Anyone having information about Salem’s presentations of the Living Lord’s Supper would be greatly appreciated. We will find a place to include more items if you have them. The committee thanks everyone for their help.
Search Committee The Search Committee faithfully continues its work in pursuing our next pastor to lead us into the future. When developing our Church Profile our members were asked “Why do you go to this church?” There are varied answers, however, Eugene Peterson says the real reason is “We are called to worship.” Every gathering begins with a call to worship. Peterson says people assemble for worship because God called them together whether they know it or not. We are called into a faith community. The Search Committee has a large task before us. We are in the process of calling a pastor. Scripture must be taught and preached, prayers must be offered, visitation must be conducted, sacraments must be administered, counsel must be given, and worship must be led. The pastoral call before us is vital, and we are called to be servants alongside our pastor and leader. Our future depends on our journey together to serve God and our church community. As we assemble to hear God’s word spoken in scripture, sermon and sacraments, our faith responds in praise, obedience and commitment. God has made clear his saving love is to be shared, both in receiving and giving. Our faith community has a large task before us. We are called to worship. We give God thanks and praise for our church community and for all the love and support of our members during this time of reflection and looking to the future of Salem. We believe God is at work in preparing our next leader for Salem and is building each of us for the journey before us. We want to thank Pastor John, the Council, the committee work, our staff and our members for the strong commitment during this time of transition. We also thank Rev. Shana Johnson for her close work with the Committee. We are truly blessed at Salem with all our leaders. God’s Peace to All, The Search Committee (Portions shared from “Five Smooth Stones for Pastoral Work” by Eugene Peterson.)
