ForherfirstsoloshowattheMayorGallery,IndianbornBritishartistTanyaLingwillmakeagroupofnewLinePaintingsthataddtotheseriesstartedin2014firstshownatAlexEagle’soldspace,SouthKensington.Theworkswillbeexclusivelymadeinthegalleryoveroneweekendbeforetheshowopens;sheetsofpaperwillbehungwhileLingwithapaintkettleinonehandandpaintbrushintheothergetstowork.Eachoftheapproximately20workswillshareasinglecolourwhichforthisseason,isDr.Ph.Martin'sCadmiumRed,aredwithanevocative1970sorangehue.Dr.Ph.Martin’sUltramarineandDrPhMartin'sSapGreenwerethecoloursusedfortheproductionrunin2015and2017respectivelyandtheworksfrom2014weremadeinaninkidentifiedinthestudioasaMatisseblue.TheseearlyMatissebluelinesavoidedeachotherandnevercrossedwhilethemorerecentworksseethelinescross, blend and collide. They are a little less disciplined. Ink drips fall in the manner of Christopher Wool.Completedinonesittingtheyareneverreworked.Theyhangtogetheraestheticallybutnotwoarethesame.Theydescribeformbutafterallourlookingthereisnodiscernibleobject.Theyscaleupandscaledown,moveinandmoveout,twist,turnandrunandthenslowdownagain.In2013,LingwasinvitedbyTheMayorGallerytopaintdirectlyontothegallery'swallstomarktheclosingofthe22aCorkStreetspace.ThisfirstpublicappearanceoftheLinePaintingideatooktheformofamuralthatwas,induecourse,smashedupandgrounddownbythedemolitionofthebuildingpre-development.ThegenesisofthelinescanbetracedbackbeforethistoatextiledesignpaintedbyLingfortheLouisVuittonCruisecollection2009.TheyhavealsoappearedonaFendihandbagandalargemuralthatformedthebackdroptohersculptureshowatDarbyshireframemakers,2015.SophieHastingscommissionedLingforArt16topaintoneinfrontoftheartfairvisitorsandasingleworkwasincludedinSelectedWorksfromtheMurdermecollectionatNewportStreetGallery,2017.BorninCalcutta(1966),herchildhoodwasspentinAmerica,AfricaandEnglandwhereshestudiedFashionDesignandTextilesatStMartinsSchoolofArt.Aftergraduatingin1989LingmovedtoParistoworkasadesignerforDorotheeBisandthenforChristianLacroix.OnherreturntoLondonshesetupacontemporaryartprojectBipashaGhoshwithherhusbandWilliamLingandin1996producedherfirstexhibitionofdrawingsinartistGavinTurk’sstudioontheCharingCrossRoad,London.ThisexhibitionledtoacommissiontomakedrawingsforBritishVogue.Nowover50ofherdrawingsarehousedinthePrintsandDrawingscollectionattheV&A,London.TanyaLinglivesandworksinLondon
