• CALIFORNIA LEADERSHIP ACADEMY – CLA has a 28-year record of training effective student leaders for the most successful bands
in the state. You can trust Dave Kuhns to point your potential leadership team in the right direction at one of his popular and time-tested
“Introduction to Leadership” workshops this spring. Dave recently retired as a full time high school band director (Arizona) and is an
inspirational speaker who will effectively “lay it on the line” regarding expectations and qualifications for prospective student leaders.
Here are SEVEN TAKEAWAYS Dave will explore with the students:
1. The difference between leading and controlling.
2. The key to having responsibility without having the authority to force compliance.
3. The importance of relationships over structure.
4. What followers really want from their leaders.
5. How to communicate with adults.
6. The actual value of time in rehearsals.
7. How to become the leader who is actually worth following.
Students have 3 options to attend:

• DONATIONS NEEDED – The band, orchestra and color guard program is in immediate need of donations of the following items. The
school budget does not provide for these items. If each student could commit to bring even one item throughout the semester, it would be
greatly appreciated, and will help preserve our precious budget money for more urgent issues like instrument repair. Thanks so much to
those who have already donated!
1) Large bottles of hand sanitizer (helps keep our students’ hands clean before touching their instruments each day and helps to keep our
students from getting ill and missing school and rehearsal).
• HONOR BAND & ORCHESTRA OPPORTUNITIES – Participation in an honor bands & orchestras provides a challenging, musically-
rewarding opportunity for students and helps them to advance their musical knowledge and understanding beyond simply playing in their own
high school groups. Honor group participation also looks great on college and university applications. Honor groups are “extra,” meaning
that they are in addition to your first commitment, which is to your own program here at Los Osos. Dr. Andress does grant some schedule
exceptions to honor band students when overlaps occur, but as always it is the student’s responsibility to work this out in advance. We
encourage all of our students to seek out an honor band or orchestra experience this school year. The following opportunities are currently
available:
o 2018 TRIBUTE TO KING KARL KING HONOR BAND (for CURRENT 9th Grade Students Only) – Sponsored by the

• PROGRAM SCRAPBOOK UPDATE – We have been working on updating our program scrapbooks, however we are in need of some
supplies. In order to keep the books looking uniform and neat, we are asking for gift cards from Hobby Lobby. We also welcome prints from
students and parents from all band, orchestra & color guard events. Please include a note with event and name of those in the picture if
possible. Thank you for your support as we continue to preserve our program history!
• RANCHO CUCAMONGA COMMUNITY BAND – The city of Rancho Cucamonga Community Services Department invites you to join

outdoor community concert. There is NO registration fee required to participate. Participants simply need to register online or at the first
rehearsal. Participants will have the option of purchasing a band polo shirt to be worn at the performance.

Good musicians play their instruments year-round!
• REGARDING TAs FOR NEXT SCHOOL YEAR – We do not assign TAs for next year’s band, orchestra & color guard classes until after
auditions for next year. This generally takes place in the last two weeks of the spring semester. So, after Regiment and Jazz Band and
Orchestra auditions are completed we will post a sign-up sheet for students who are interested in serving as a TA for one of our classes.
Please know that our TAs work hard and that while some days are busier than others, it isn’t a free study hall or easy “A.” Our TAs are
workers, and often play in the ensemble in which they serve as a TA.
• REGISTER NOW FOR IDYLLWILD ARTS JAZZ CAMP – The online application is now LIVE! Potential students and recruits, please
visit the online catalog at www.idyllwildarts.org right away. The jazz camp has a capped enrollment for this upcoming summer. Open spots
will fill quickly! Many of our LO Jazz Band students have attended this camp in past years and it is a very fine opportunity. All of our
students who have attended in the past have come back as better musicians! Check it out!

Osos Band, Orchestra & Color Guard who is college bound, demonstrates a strong work ethic and leadership skills, has a GPA of 2.5 or

locked down and in tip-top shape today by 1:00pm today, thank you!
• The Band Hall will be open today until 1:00pm. Please plan accordingly. Students, please do not ask another teacher, security guard, or

• ASSIGNMENT (for all brass, woodwind and string players in all classes) – Reed/slide/rosin check today for 25 points. Woodwinds will
have five (5) good-quality reeds on their stand for inspection. These reeds need to be out of the wrappers and should be rotated each day so
that each woodwind student has a minimum of five (5) working reeds at any good time. Brass players will be expected to completely
disassemble and reassemble their horns (all slides and valves out and back in) in a reasonable timeframe. This demonstrates that all slides and
valves are in good working order and can be manipulated for proper intonation. String players will have rosin and demonstrate that the bow
and all strings are in good, playable condition.
• Los Osos is on block “A” schedule today per our CAASPP testing:

2:55pm Dinner break. Bring a sack lunch, parents drop something off, or leave campus. Please be on time getting back. An optional-but-
suggested study hall will be held during this hour inside the Band Hall. This time is designed for students to do their homework
and the room is kept quiet during that time. Students may eat quietly while they do their homework, however the Band Hall must be
left clean at the end of this time. Triston Lopez will monitor today’s study hall and keep the room quiet and on-task. Those
who wish to practice their musical instruments or hang-out with friends during this timeframe must do so far enough away
from the Band Hall doors as to not disturb the silence of the study hall taking place inside. Thanks for being considerate of
those who wish to use this time to study and do homework!
4:00pm At this time, winter guard students are in full rehearsal at the Vineyard Junior High School Gym (6440 Mayberry Avenue, Rancho
Cucamonga, CA 91737). All band students are in Master Classes at the LOHS Band Hall. Band section leaders, please remember to
report master class attendance (tardies/absences) to the secretaries prior to the concert ensembles beginning at 5:15pm. Winter guard

program secretaries will take attendance today visually, as each master class is performing. Today’s event is casual and there is no admission
charge. Family and friends are also encouraged to attend. Evening band rehearsals will proceed as planned at the conclusion of the recital
(perhaps a few minutes late in the recital runs long).

attend tonight’s session. Our marching and percussion instructors will be working with the 8th graders while the bands rehearse inside. If you
know of incoming 8th graders, please remind and encourage them to attend! Those 8th graders interested in color guard may also attend!

0 Period 6:45am No zero period rehearsals this morning. This is an excellent time for our students to schedule before-
school make-up tests or tutoring sessions with their teachers. As a reminder, missing one class to make
up work for another class is against school policy. Please schedule make-ups and tutoring so that they
do not interfere with our zero period rehearsals. Thank you!
4th Period 8:05 – 10:07am Jazz Band rehearsal. * We have special guests observing our rehearsal today. Please be on-time and
prepared to a great job!
5th Period/Lunch 10:07am – 12:16pm If you have 2nd period in building D, Gym or portables you have 1st lunch. All others have 2nd lunch.

from our area. If you can’t stay all the way until 9:30pm, it’s okay to leave early. Earn extra credit for this by taking a selfie picture on your
phone with Mr. Aranda and email this picture to Dr. A at [email protected] tomorrow to earn ten (10) points for all band classes

empty and locked. Missing locks shall constitute a failed locker check. Remember, shared lockers are a shared responsibility! The locker

Upcoming Schedule of Events:
• UPDATES are listed in bold type!
• Please do not prioritize this list! All events listed here carry equal weight and importance in our minds and for our program. A
parade performance is as important as a football game, as a booster club meeting, as a concert festival, as a jazz band event at the
junior high school, as field show championships. If it’s on this list, it’s required, and it’s important. Please know this!
• In addition to the school-day class-time rehearsals and the events listed below, Regiment (band and guard) students also participate in weekly
marching band rehearsal every Tuesday evening from 5:30-8:30pm in the football stadium, beginning on the first week of school through
until winter break.
• In addition to the school-day class-time rehearsal and the events listed below, all band and color guard students also participate in a weekly
master class rehearsal every Tuesday afternoon from 4:00-5:00pm at the band hall and quad area, beginning the first week of school through
until the last week of school.
• In addition to the school-day class-time rehearsals and the events listed below, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble and Winter Guard students also
participate in weekly rehearsals every Tuesday evening, beginning in January and extending through until the last week of school.
• “Call Time Sheets” which give specific details (when and where to arrive, what to wear, what to bring with you, etc.) will be posted on this
Weekly page approximately one week prior to the scheduled event.

*Please make note of these important dates as you plan your schedules – students
who are absent from the activities listed above may be dropped from the program.
Please do not prioritize this list! All events listed here carry equal weight and
importance in our minds and for our program. A parade performance is as
important as a football game, as a booster club meeting, as a concert festival, as a
jazz band event at the junior high school, as field show championships. If it’s on
this list, it’s required, and it’s important. Please know this! Advanced-planning and
accountability are very crucial to the success of our program!
GO OSOS!
