Kaesler “Old Bastard” Shiraz, 2013
Bold and beautiful powerhouse wines boasting full fruit flavour and intensity - when you think of classic Barossa wines, Kaesler is one of the first to mind.
The first vines were planted in 1892 by Silesian pioneers who came to the Barossa Valley in the 1840’s and bought 96 acres in 1892. By 1893 they had planted the entire acreage with Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro ( aka Mouvedre) as well as White Hermitage wine such as Viognier and Semillon. Some of the gnarled dry-grown Shiraz still remains, and even after 162 years, provide the backbone to some of the more powerful wines, namely the “Old Bastard” Shiraz.
Kaesler has consistently produced bold estate wines representative of the classic Barossa Valley style, but the benchmark, the king of all Kaesler’s would have to be the “Old Bastard” Shiraz. Classified as “Outstanding” by Langton’s with its rich and intense fruit style, the “Old Bastard” Shiraz paved the way for Kaesler. A string of highly celebrated wines followed suit, the generous “Stonehorse” range, the “Baby Bogan” “Reach for the Sky” Shiraz, and the uniquely delicious “Lovechild Viognier” wines to name a few.
The Kaesler family owned and operated the vineyards from 1893 to 1986. In 1999 winemaker Reid Bosward seized the opportunity to become the head of the new Kaesler family assisted by winemaking legend Stephen Dew. Together they have created a 5-star James Halliday rated winery with their distinct style and modest winemaking techniques that consistently produce wine rated highly by critics, peers and publications.

A few favourite wines from the Cellar, hand picked by our Sommelier Becky.
Guthrie “Wild” Gruner Veltliner, 2018 - Adelaide Hills, SAAs the name might suggest, Hugh Guthrie’s “Wild” Gruner Veltliner is a fun & funky example of what Gruner is capable of in the Hills. He has achieved all of the classic attributes of the variety through creative winemaking; floral, grapefruit, white pepper, but is more textural with a bit more grip than its more traditional namesake. Fantastic food wine! This wine lends itself to a variety of flavours; pair with seafood, fresh flavours & savoury pastry dishes. Murdoch Hill Artisan Series “Tilbury” Chardonnay, 2017 - Adelaide Hills, SAFossicking in the downstairs cellar I was very happy to stumble across a case of this!! The 2017 Murdoch Hill “Tilbury” Chardonnay is a rare beauty, this is the wine that took Michael Downer to victory in the Young Gun of Wine Awards a couple of years ago. Murdoch Hill’s “Artisan” series is where the winemaker Michael Downer has spread his wings in the family range and focusses his winemaking in a more dialled-back, analogue style. Hailing from a single vineyard in the Piccadilly Valley sub-region of the Adelaide Hills, it’s handcrafted in a textural, weighty style without forfeiting freshness and complexity. It received 94 points from Mike Bennie, citing “Delicious too. Superb stuff”. And 95 points from James Halliday! Surprising only because I wouldn’t classify this as your run of the mill James Halliday wine. If you want to try something different and you love your premium Hills Chardonnay, then this needs to be on your dining table. It’s terrific. Mayer Nebbiolo, 2017 - Yarra Valley, VICMiniscule release of whole bunch Nebbiolo from one of the Yarra’s most unique characters, the one and only Timo Mayer. The words bombastic, charismatic and wild are as much applicable to Timo as they are his wines. His philosophy is literally “bring back the funk”, so for those not up for a wine adventure, you have been warned! In saying that, this is incredibly pretty, it’s a wine with chiselled teeth of tannin, yet a lengthy silken feel from beginning to end. There are few Nebbiolos in Australia that rise to this level. To look at, it’s incredibly light, almost delicate in appearance, but the power and the structure that Nebbiolo is famous for is all there. Get this involved with lamb, charcuterie, hard cheeses or even the duck would reward such a wine.

Maxime Francois Laurent “Il Fait Soif”, 2017 - Côtes du Rhône, FranceI love philosophical winemaking, I love vignerons keeping things simple, keeping things natural, keeping intentions pure, keeping land carefully. The philosophy behind Gramenon is purity. “Purity remains the ever inaccessible and unrealistic target, we are just aiming at expressing the very best, without betraying the terroir and the grapes, while best adapting to the differences of the vintage” and they have done so here seemingly effortlessly. This wine is a remarkably funky & fresh blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Cinsaut, displaying a vibrant fruit core, laced with black olive and a fine, tarry, savoury edge. This is one of those wines to ponder and sit with, to watch unfold and unfurl, but juicy enough to put away classic “glou glou” style!
Mount Mary “Reflexion” Cabernet Franc, 2017 - Yarra Valley, VICMount Mary really doesn’t need too much introduction, the list of accolades is longer than my arm. They’re one of the country’s most celebrated and collectable family-owned estates, so even though we could keep this downstairs, we’re not purely because it’s so good now! This is a limited run of younger vine Cabernet Franc from the great Mount Mary vineyard made by winemaking hero, Sam Middleton. This is a wine that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but still over delivers. Blackcurrant, raspberry fruit core balanced by black olive and earth, beautifully balanced, medium-bodied, buoyant, fresh, complex, dusty; it ticks all the boxes“Such a great drink” – 95 points from Gary Walsh and only 200 dozen made, can’t plug it any harder than that.

2013 Mordrelle Blanc de Blanc Adelaide Hills, SA
Mordrelle is a label born of love, husband and wife team Martin and Michelle and Michelle’s parents David and Jane Dreckow. Martin Moran is the man at the helm, crafting the kinds of wines he like to drink (and I do too:). Born in Mendoza, Argentina, now settled here in the Hills in Hahndorf, Martin is continuing his grandfather’s legacy of winemaking after getting bitten by the winemaking bug and making wine all over the world. His first vintage Blanc de Blancs is the one we have by the glass now, it was made and stored on his in-laws’ deck and first showcased at their wedding. They have since moved off the deck and into their own winemaking facility, onto bigger things, but can’t get much better! Having spent 6 years on lees, this has incredible texture, a fine bead backed by zesty citrus, fresh baked bread, brioche and a silty stone-like minerality. The beautiful Mordrelle labels are all painted by artist José Luis Moran (1938 – 2010), Martin’s father. Heralding from Argentina’s wine capital of Mendoza, José Luis painted thousands of watercolours and oils in his lifetime. His artworks are proudly displayed on their labels to honour his memory and his roots.

2017 Tapanappa ‘Tiers’ Chardonnay Adelaide Hills, SA
Brian Croser strikes again! Voted “Best in Show” of the 17,000-entry Decanter World Wine Awards against wines from all great Chardonnay regions of the globe, 2017 Tiers Chardonnay is an exquisite expression of the unique Piccadilly Valley terroir from a great vintage.Pale green gold in colour, 2017 Tapanappa Piccadilly Valley Chardonnay has refined and fresh stone fruit aromas and flavours of white peach and pear. The subtle complexity of marzipan and vanilla oak complements the fresh fruit. The hallmark Piccadilly Valley Chardonnay texture is followed by a long after taste with a slight savoury quince finish. The Piccadilly Valley has clearly confirmed its status as home to “distinguished sites” and the 2017 Tapanappa Piccadilly Valley Chardonnay “is an exquisite expression of a unique Australian terroir.”Very happy to be able to offer this experience on our wine list, unfortunately we have limited stock so be gentle and don’t drink it all.

2016 Domaine Comte Abbatucci ‘Gris Imperial’ Rosé Corsica, France
Wine from Corsica?! Where even is that?! It’s a tiny island in the Mediterranean, classified as one of the 18 regions of France. It once had bountiful vines, all native and unique, then they got wiped out through neglect and abandonment. Almost. Vigneron Jean-Charles Abbatucci brought back Corsica’s indigenous grape varieties back from the brink of extinction. The Domaine Comte Abbatucci Collection wines all come from a single parcel planted by Antoine Abbatucci in the early 1960’s. At the time, Antoine (Jean-Charles’s father) was president of the Chamber of Agriculture in Corsica, and noticed that the subsistence farming lifestyle of the mountain villages was rapidly disappearing as the villagers left the countryside for the coastal towns. Several villages farmed old vines of indigenous varietals that were left abandoned as the population left. To save these varietals from extinction, Abbatucci took cuttings of each threatened vineyard he came across and planted the cuttings on his estate near Ajaccio, in a single plot of granite soil. By 1962, eighteen different varieties had been planted. Thanks Jean-Charles Abbatucci! Thanks to you now we can all enjoy this bright, delicate, perfumed rosé made entirely from 90% Sciaccarellu and 10% Barbarossa. I’m so grape-ful.

2015 Ochota Barrels ‘Impeccable Disorder’ Pinot Noir Adelaide Hills, SA
The term “rockstar winemaker” gets thrown around fairly loosely these days, but Amber & Taras Ochota are the real deal. Ochota Barrels was a lovechild born from a dream “to move back to the Adelaide Hills, make yummy holistic wine…and spend more time in a hammock.”– so they moved back and set up roots in the Adelaide Hills and began their journey crafting small batches of wine from surrounding vineyards in the Hills and special sites across McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley. The Ochota Barrels “Impeccable Disorder” Pinot Noir is Taras wine baby. It is the dark to the light, the beast to the beauty that is Amber’s Ochota Barrels “Home” Pinot Noir. Luscious and broody, guttural and captivating, rustic but still refined.

2013 Kaesler ‘Old Bastard’ Shiraz Barossa Valley, SA
Hailing from the original Old Bastard vineyard planted in 1893, comes Old Bastard the wine! The old bastard angel at the top of the Kaesler Christmas Tree, the top tier, the premium offering, the benchmark Barossa red. Opulent, dark fruited, broody, rich, hefty, savoury, treacle, cocoa, this wine is so complex that I could just sit here and write adjectives ‘til the cows come home, but I won’t. I’ll just say that this is extremely high quality wine, extremely full-bodied and extremely well-priced (seeing as it normally retails for $300!!)

Old FashionedThe Old Fashioned was collectively created around 1900 by a bourbon distiller and a bartender at the Pendennis Club in Louisville. Few have been able to find a better cocktail that sweetens, chills and smoothens the flavour of whiskey. A classic still enjoyed today.
Adelaide Hills NegroniWho doesn’t love a Negroni? The perfect balance between gin, vermouth and amaro. We believe in celebrating our local community and the producers around us. This drink highlights the delicious spirits that are being produced by our friends at Adelaide Hills Distillery.
Crafers 78° Gin MartiniWho doesn’t like a properly stirred (yes, stirred) martini? Our Gin Martini is crafted using the award winning 78° Small Batch Gin from just down the freeway. Now was it 46 or 48 stirs that make a great martini?
Moscow MuleCreated in Los Angeles around 1941, this classic was born when two parts of Vodka, ginger ale and a splash of lime was mixed. The cocktail was originally served in copper mugs with a kicking mule on the side. Hence the Moscow Mule.... we’re still not sure where the Moscow part comes in, but just go with it.
Side- CarThe Side Car is a classic Cognac cocktail famous from the era of the speakeasy bar and lounges. The cocktail features Cognac, orange and cinnamon. A perfect combination to sit in front of the fire on a rainy day.
