The Light of St. John’s June, 2019
The long awaited lazy days of summer are here! For school
children, this represents the promise of relaxation, fun, and a well
deserved break from the grind of long school days, hours, home-
work, and tight schedules.
But while the children get a much needed break, many adults don't know the meaning of
the words "the lazy days of summer." In fact many parents of young children bemoan the
fast pace of this season with packing and unpacking for vacation travel and repeated
trips to Little League games. Not to mention all of the extra lawn mowing that our yards
will need now that the sun is shining so brightly after a very rainy spring.
But before we get too busy and stressed about summer plans and obligations, maybe we
should consider what God's word tells us about the importance of rest. It can’t go unno-
ticed that God Himself rested after six days of assembling the universe. Knowing that
time to kick back was important for the people He created, God instituted the Sabbath so
that we would get the point that no one can work without a break along the way. When
we go, go, go all the time and never take time to relax and unwind, then we grow weary
mentally, physically, spiritually, and relationally. Even Jesus understood the need to rest,
frequently leaving the crowds that followed him in order to rest and refocus his thoughts
on God the Father.
Unfortunately, in the time in which we live, many people feel guilty or unfulfilled if they
are not busy all of the time. But it's important to realize that not everything needs to be
done -- at least not right now. It may be more important sometime to sit back with a glass
of iced tea and appreciate the beauty of God's creation and think about the greatness of
God.
So, this summer I encourage you to take time away from your busy schedule to relax and
unwind. Your body and mind need time for recreation in order to be useful vessel for
God. And may God be glorified.
Have a restful and blessed summer,
Terry

What Makes a Dad
God took the strength of a
mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family in need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to
add,
He knew His masterpiece was
complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad
