President McAleese claims Carrick-on-Shannon is an inspiration in this tough economic time and said that Ireland should look to the town of Carrick-on-Shannon for “inspiration and guidance”. Carrick was awarded a GOLD medal in the 2010 Entente Florale Europe competition. The Entente Florale promotes a greener and more pleasant environment, and the improvement of the quality of life for both inhabitants and visitors. Twelve countries participated in the towns category, with Carrick-on-Shannon one of only four towns
in Europe that won gold. When in Carrick, to unveil a commemorative plaque celebrating the gold medal triumph, the President commented on Carrick’s quick turn around from a town “under flood water” to a gold medal winner. President McAleese said that it was ironic but also metaphoric, that despite “one of the worst recent experiences, the town never looked better.” She said the country should now look to Carrick for inspiration “a miracle occurs when people work together with the same spirit.”
