BIRD ROCK
FOURTH OF JULY PARADE
“WAVES OF FREEDOM”“WAVES OF FREEDOM”
Catch a wave to Bird Rock to join the 34thAnnual Bird Rock Fourth
of July Parade. Be inspired by your backyard the ocean and surf
down Beaumont Avenue. Walk bike trike skateboard or float
your way down to the fun-filled after-party and enjoy food and
entertainment after the parade.
For 34 years our neighbors in the Beaumont Street area have been
staging this delightful “hometown parade” for friends & families on
July 4th. This year’s parade will start at 10:00 a.m.
Being part of the neighborhood our congregation joins in the fun and
helps out with the festivities. This year we’ll be opening our campus
and bathrooms again for the comfort of parade participants and
providing homemade goodies to the crowd. Betsy Witt is coordin-
ating our “goodie gathering and give-away” effort so please contact
her to volunteer to help. We need baked goods and booth attendants.
Betsy can be reached at 858-414-2801 at home
at 858-454-0858 or [email protected].
Get caught-up in the fun!
WORDS FROM WALT: “WELCOME, BRIDGET MUSANTE!”
2
After a solid search process our Nursery School Director Search Committee has
selected our new Executive Director. She is Bridget Musante. I agree with our
current NS Board President Casey Masterson as she writes: “I couldn’t be more
thrilled that Bridget will be leading our Nursery School with her love and enthu-
siasm for children and for early childhood education her great community ties
and her outstanding background in management and leadership.”
Bridget is a long-time La Jolla resident living in the church neighborhood who
followed a very successful employment with Qualcomm as a Regional Sales
Manager and Senior Account Manager with some equally successful childrear-
ing years. She and her husband Anthony have two youth-aged children Tate
and Hannah who attend the Bishop’s School and are graduates of Methodist.
Bridget’s ties to our program go way back. In fact as a parent she served on the
NS Board and twice she has chaired our NS Gala once as a parent and then
again as an alum. In recent years Bridget has worked on our teaching staff and given hours of office sup-
port to Julie Tina and Joyce. Additionally Bridget is active in our broader community serving in Las
Patronas National Charity League and Bishops Parents Committee.
Bridget is a marvelous person who will make a great contribution to our Nursery School program and our
church. She is tireless an inspired and creative leader who has a great love of children and caring for par-
ents and respect and support for teachers and aides. We are most fortunate to have her lead Methodist.
Please help me welcome Bridget to our staff as our new Executive Director of LJUMCNS and her family to
our extended church congregation.
I am incredibly honored to be given the opportunity to lead the Nursery School that has cultivated my
early education career and educated my own children. La Jolla United Methodist Church Nursery School
is a very special place where so many have learned grown and developed into responsible loving and
committed members of the community. I look forward to fostering the Nursery School toward continued
success and growth.

FOUNDATION GIFT The LJUMC Foundation is
pleased to announce the receipt
of a substantial gift from the
estate of Marvin and Bobbie
Burdg.
Bobbie and Marv were active in
the life of our church for many
years and it was their desire to
have a lasting impact on our fu-
ture. The Foundation will invest their gift and the income it pro-
duces will be available to supplement the funding of our church’s
most pressing needs. Since the principal will not be spent this sup-
port will continue indefinitely. The Foundation gratefully
acknowledges this generous gift from Marvin and Bobbie Burdg.

Summer Sunday School
The Gospel According to Disney!
This summer turn simple times
into golden moments to teach
your child about God.
Have a picnic. Before
you eat, thank God for
providing the food. Talk
about God's provision for
all our needs. Save bread
crumbs to provide lunch
for some birds.
Go cloud watching. Talk
about how the clouds
change. Tell how you see
your child changing. Talk
about how God has been
changing you and your
child.
Transform flowers. Be-
fore bedtime, have your
child fill a clear glass jar
with 1 – 2 cups of water
and a 1—ounce bottle of
food coloring. Place
white daisies in the jar.
In the morning, check
the results. Talk about
how the color of the
petals changed as the
water fed the daisies.
We’re like the petals
because we change and
grow as God’s word feeds
us.
Greet the end of the day.
Pack a picnic dinner and
go to the beach and
watch the sunset. Talk
about the day and the
wonderful way that you
all experience God during
it.
Fly a kite. Talk about
how the Holy Spirit is
like the wind that powers
the kite. We can’t see
the wind, but we feel it
and see what it does. We
can’t see the Holy Spirit,
but we can see his work
and feel his presence.

MISSIONS OUTREACH AND SOCIAL CONCERNS UPDATE
Hello!
Just a few notes of what has been happening with our Missions Outreach Team:
In May Ted Todd led a very successful campaign to assist our Missionary Team Dave and Lori Persons
in carrying on their work of 35 years in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Ted announced that The Per-
sons would be retiring this August and asked LJUMC to pledge $3 000.00 which would allow a family of
four to attend the school at which the Persons work for an entire year. Not only was that amount of mon-
ey raised but three times that amount to total $9 000.00!!!! A huge thank you to ALL who contributed to
this dedicated effort!
Our congregation continues to help CCSA give aid to the homeless of San Diego. Every week our quiet
angel D’ Ann Fanestil brings the food which has been donated by our members to the CCSA emergency
center in Pacific Beach. There it is distributed faster than it could ever be collected. At this time our
shelves are nearly bare as the summer months prove to be challenging to keep up with the needs of so
many. CCSA now has a full time social worker who assists clients in getting their feet back on the
ground. Lydia has proven to be a very valuable resource. Along with this LJUMC contributes an annual
benevolence to CCSA. We are a generous congregation indeed.
Mark Maddox led one of the most popular projects thus far in our Missions work. La Jolla Shores Beach
was the site of a community Beach Clean Up on Saturday June 8. This was done in conjunction with San
Diego Coastkeepers. We started the morning out with coffee juice and bagels and everyone donned
gloves grabbed a bag and proceeded onto the sand to clean up our shoreline. We had approximately 20
participants through LJUMC that joined in the effort!
We have had no takers to participate in our Guatemala Project for the month of July. We would sponsor
an interested person to head to Chichicastenango Guatemala for the purpose of building wood efficiency
stoves and to complete a school building. This opportunity is offered both in June and July.
And finally our annual CCSA Back To School Drive begins in July! We will collect fully packed back-
packs throughout the month to be dropped in the office or in the sanctuary . (See page 8 for list of items.)
The backpacks will be distributed from August 19—September 6 2013. PLEASE DESIGNATE GRADE:
K-2 OR 3-9 SOMEWHERE ON BACKPACK. THANK YOU!!
It has been my pleasure to serve you as Missions Outreach and Social Concerns chairperson. I am relin-
quishing my duties as of August 1. Thank you for your unceasing generosity to the needs of those both in
our community and globally.
Fondly Anne Robertson
