Aspirating Smoke Detection
Aspirating smoke detection (also known as Air Sampling) is a method of smoke detection, whereby a sample of air is continuously drawn from the protected area through a network of sampling pipes, and passed through the detection chamber of a centrally located detection unit.

Questions & Answers
Fixed Vs Relative Sensitivity
The unique technology employed in Stratos® Aspirating Smoke Detection Systems uses relative sensitivity to establish appropriate alarm thresholds.
The sensitivity is determined by the ambient smoke level of the protected area.
All other systems have their sensitivity (the amount of smoke required to produce an alarm) fixed during manufacture or during commissioning.
Why is this a problem?
Sensitivity settings are arbitrarily set and often times misapplied
Must be manually altered, and are constantly “out of date”
Filter loading or optic contamination diminishes smoke level reaching or being processed by the detector
Sensitivity to a fire varies with changing ambient conditions

Fixed Sensitivity Detectors
0 to 2 Weeks 1 Month 1 Year
Using historical data or pre-designated sensitivity set points, the installer selects FIXED sensitivity set points typically above the highest smoke density the detector has registered. These set points will REMAIN at that level until manually altered.
The TRUE sensitivity (the difference between ambient and alarm levels) will vary because the alarm point is fixed.
As normal activity changes within the environment, the detector is prone to false alarms if the ambient level ever approaches or rises higher than the FIXED sensitivity set points
As filter loading occurs or the activity within the environment changes, a trend of reducing ambient smoke level will result in the detector becoming less and less sensitive!

ClassiFire is a patented “Perceptive Artificial Intelligence” process controlling all aspects of the system, ensuring the maximum safe sensitivity regardless of ambient conditions.
An absolute minimum of installer programming is necessary. The risk of setting inappropriate thresholds is avoided.
ClassiFire Provides and Maintains the optimum Sensitivity for the Protected Area, continuously.

The initial 15 minute FastLearn™ process provides a ‘starting point’ for the detector sensitivity
During the first 24 hours, ClassiFire will increase the TRUE sensitivity until the best ‘safe’ position is reached, determined by the Alarm Factor
ClassiFire will then maintain that sensitivity, regardless of changes in ambient smoke density

Applications
With the advent of “next generation” Aspirating Smoke Detection Systems which feature a wide sensitivity range and advanced artificial intelligence features, such as ClassiFire, reliable very early warning smoke detection is now possible in a wide range of applications.
Where very early warning detection is required Where high air flow is present Where the environment is hostile (very cold, very hot, wet or dusty, strong RF fields
or contaminated) Where detection is to be concealed for aesthetic or covert considerations Where there are areas subject to smoke stratification Where access for maintenance is impractical or impossible Where reliable detection is required for suppression release

Questions & Answers
Hostile Environments
By nature of the system, an aspirating smoke detection system, such as Stratos, has no need to be located within the area to be protected, as the air is transported to the detector(s) via sampling pipes. This means ASD can often be used in areas of extreme heat, cold, humidity, high levels of RF interference or in contaminated areas.
The Stratos range of detectors incorporate Laser Dust Discrimination (LDD™). This means that it is possible to provide highly effective smoke detection in dusty hostile environments with minimum risk of false alarms

Maintenance Access Issues
Accessibility to traditional spot type smoke detectors is required for ongoing maintenance and testing. This can be impractical in a large number of applications as access equipment might be required or areas may be restricted for access.
Aspirating detectors can be strategically located facilitating ease of maintenance.
