Thefirstmonthofthe2015-2016school year is coming to an end and itis time to discuss some of the recentchangesatEstacadaHighSchool.Manystudents question the reason for thesechangesandnowtheanswerswillbere-vealed.Thechangesincludetwoschoollunches, early-releaseWednesdays, andastudentdecisionteamcreatedbyPrin-cipalCarpenter.

Two Lunches Previously, EHS had only onelunch, allowing all students to mingle.This year, EHS switched to having atwo-lunch schedule that splits the staffandstudentsintwoseparategroups.Due

to recent budget cuts, thedistrict has lostteachers.ThiscausesEHStoshare teach-erswiththemiddleschool.Inorderfortheteacherstotraveltoandfrombothschools,the high school had to copy the middleschool’s newest bell schedule. Last year,bothschoolssharedthesameschedule,butthemiddleschoolchangedtheirscheduletoaccommodatethenewflowofsixthgradersintotheirschool.

Wednesday Early Release In the last few years at EHS, therehavebeenearlyreleaseFridays.Thisyear,EHSswitchedtoearlyreleaseWednesdays.Thedecisiontochangethedayofearlyre-leasewaswrappedaroundattendanceandteacher/staff meetings. A lot of parentswouldtaketheirchildrenoutofschoolonFridays for vacations or just becauseFri-daydidn’t seemas importantas theotherschool days.This dropped the attendancerate significantly, and could have meanttroublefortheschool.Byswitchingtoear-ly releaseWednesdays, theadministrationhopesitwillraisetheattendancerate.

Student Decision Team The final change up for discussionis thatPrincipalCarpenteris tryingtoap-plymorestudentchoicesanddecisionstoEHS.At the end of the last school year,teacherandstaffweregiventhebookStu-dent Voice- The instrument of Change. The

book’s motto is: “Meaningful school re-formstartswithyourmostpowerfulpart-ners- your students!” Recently, Carpentercreated a group he calls the “AspirationsTeam.” In the group there are twenty di-verse students, one from every clique atEHS. Together the group decides on im-portantdecisionsfortheschool.TheirfirstmeetingwasThursday,September17,andthe studentswere askedwhetherornot itisagoodideatobringdrugdogsintotheschooltochecklockers.Thegroupdecidedthat although somestudentsmay take thedogsasnotbeingtrusted,bringingthedogsinisfortheprotectionofEHS.

Gym class now looks likea bowl of Ranger Fruity Peb-bles! 2015-16 Estacada High School administration has mandated anewdresscodeforallPhysicalEducationstudents: Generic Ranger-green sportingshortswithagreyt-shirt.

PEteachersacrosstheboardsupportthedecisionandaresatisfiedwiththeendresult. When asked about the new dresscode, Gym teacher and football coach,Mr.Mott, says, “Oh, I love it! I think thestudentsenjoythem,too.”CoachMottgoesontosaythattheuniformscreateakindofunityamongthestudentsandimprovebothhygieneanddressdownrates;Ms.Schnei-derhasalsonoticedthis.

Most students don’t seem to havemuch of a problem with the new dresscode.SophomoreCamHegarsays,“Theymakeusmoreunified,agroup,youknow?Abighappyfamily.”JuniorDamonShawalsosays,”Idon’treallymindtheuniforms,they keep you from getting your schoolclothessweaty.”

Otherstudentsdon’tshareCamandDamon’s opinion. Sophomore BrandonThornhillsays,“Idon’tlikethem.Itiseas-iertodressdowninyourownclotheswhen

youdon’t have toworry about taking theuniformshomeandwashingthem.Butit’salsonicebecauseeveryonecanbematch-ing.”FreshmanGabrielMartinezalsohastosay,”Ihatethem!”Whenaskedwhy,heresponded;”The uniforms are uncomfort-able.When I take them out of the dryer,theyareallitchy.WhenIgetsweaty,theyarestickyanduncomfortable.”

While most students seem to likethe new school uniforms, there are stillthose who don’t like the policy change. But,fornow,getusedtoseeingthegreyandgreen.

AthleteoftheMonth-FootballByShaylieDarity,Hycada Staff Reporter

Douglas Kirchhofer- Junior DougisanoutstandingstudentinEstacadaHighSchool.HeisEstacada’sownTroyBolton:singing,dancing,andplayingvarsitysportslikebasketballandfootball.Thisfall,hehasshownhisout-standingathleticabilitiesasanoffensivefullback, as well as a defensive “willlinebacker” on the football team.He isconstantlyworking hard and is a valu-ableteamplayer.

In an interview, head footballcoachAndrewMottsaidthatDoug“hasbeenagreatleaderamongtheboys.Hishard work this summer has paid off.”Doughashelpedleadtheteamtowinsintheirfirstfourgames.Doug’sfather,Mr.Kirchhofer,saysthatDoughelpsleadhisteamby“beingagoodexampleanden-couragingotherteammates.”

Doug isaverywell-roundedstu-dent,participatinginanythingandevery-thingtheschoolhastooffer.Footballisoneofhisfavoritesbecausehegetstodoitwithhis friendsandmakememories.He enjoys the commitment that comesfrombeingapartoftheteam,andworkshardyear-roundtogetbetter.

TheEHSfootballteamiscurrently4-0andranks1stinleague.Theyareex-ceedingallexpectationsandkeepbring-inghomeamazingwins.Dougsaysthatin order to keep winning, “the offenseneeds to keep chopping wood and thedefensejustneedstokeepswarming.”

Offthefootballfield,Dougisin-volvedinmanyotherextracurricularac-tivities.He is in concert choir,musicaltheatre, student council, and NationalHonorsSociety.Duringothersportssea-sons, Doug participates in basketball,track, and tennis. Doug is a dedicatedstudentandathlete,andworkshardtobehisbestineverythinghedoes.

The library budget has increasedfrom last year by approximately $1,000,something the librarian,Mrs. Riordan, isexcitedaboutasitwillgivehertheabilitytodosomeofthethingsshewantedtodolastyearbutwasunableto.LastyearwasMrs.Riordan’sfirstyearatEstacadaHighSchool,andthelibrarysawseveralchang-es.Onesuchchangewasabookwishlist,whereMrs.Riordanwouldbuybooksthatstudentssuggestedinordertoenticemorestudentsintoreading.

This year, one of the changesMrs.R.plansondoingwith the increaseofherbudgetwas to start fulfillingmore of thewishlist book requests, although she alsowantstostartupdatingsomeoftheoutdat-edreferencebooksinordertokeeptheref-erencesectionbeneficialtostudents.

Mrs.Ralsoplansongettingbooksforthosewithreadingdisabilities,apriori-tyduetothenewbudgetincrease.Shesaid,“Myfirstpriorityistryingtosupplyaudioversionsofthelanguageartsrequiredread-ingbooks,althoughIamunsureofwhichversion I want to do yet.” The librarianplansondoingthistoencouragethosewhodislikereading,ortohelpthosewhohaveahardtimereadingabook,especiallythebooksthatareoftenrequiredtobereadforEnglishclasses.

The increase to her budget was ahugesurprisetoMrs.Riordan,whothinks

that it’s an awesome surprise. It’s morethanshehadlastyear,andbecauseofthatshewill be able todomore thisyear.BesuretoaskMrs.Riordanwhatshehopestodoifyouhaveanyquestions,anddropbythelibrarytoseethesenewchangesbeingputintoplace.

In her newly-themed uni-cornlibrary,Mrs.R.alwaystriestomakealovingenvironmentforeveryone. During lunch, all arewelcometohangoutwithfriends,eat, relax, or play some of themanyboardgamessheoffers. Shehaslittleactivitiesshelikestodowithstudentsaswell.EveryTuesday isTiaraTuesday.Everyweek there’sanewmemepostedonherdesk.Also,Mrs.R.handsoutraffleticketsatrandomtostudentswhohelpout,dotheirwork when they’re supposed to,orifthey’rejustbeingdecenthu-manbeings.The studentswhosenames she drawswin a $10 giftcardtoBarnes&Nobel’s. Anyone can tell Mrs. R.lovesherjob,butmostlysheloves

thestudentsandgetting toknowthem. “The 45 minute commuteis totallyworth it.The library islike my second home!”Mrs. R.exclaims. She also loves books(obviously) and recommendsstudentsread“Strangeandbeau-tiful sorrows of Ava Lavender,”byLeslyeWalton.Or,ifstudentsinto scary books, she recom-mends“TheBirdEater,”byAniaAhleam. But books aren’t her onlypassion: She’s also super techsavy.Sheoffersherhelp toany-oneatanytime,andspentpartofthe teachers’ professional devel-opment training teachers how toworktheirnewwebsites. Along with technology,Mrs.R.justsimplyhelpspeople.Freehugsandfreecandyaresure-firewaystomakesomeone’sday,and she gives both. So anytimeyoustopbythelibrary,besuretosayhellotothesweetMrs.R.

Students have all seen thestereotypicalold librarianwith avocabularymadeupof“bequiet”or an endless “shhh!” Well, theEHSlibrarianisnothinglikethat.Mrs.Riordan,orMrs.R, isdefi-

Whatkeepsourschoolrunning smoothly? The an-swer isn’t a ‘what’ but a‘who,’andthatpersonisLin-daCole.Mrs.ColeistheAth-letic secretary, the StudentBookkeeper and the FacilityCoordinatorofEHS. Mrs. Cole is a busywomenwhile she is atworkbecause she is in charge ofso much. She is in chargeof the cash boxes, checkingthat there’s change in thembefore any pay-in event.Shealso takes care of all of themoneyEHSgetsfrommanythings, such as sports fees,ASBstickers,classfees,andparkingpasses.Mrs.Cole isalsothepersonteachersgoto

forhelpwithclubaccounts.Mrs. Cole didn’t start

working here at EHS until2006.SowhatwasshedoingbeforeshestartedworkingatEHS?Mrs.ColewenttoLaSalleHighSchool, a privateschool.Lateron,shehadherown business with her hus-band building houses. Now,she is working here at thehighschool.

Mrs.Colewantedaca-reer here because she lovestheagegroupsheworkswithatthehighschool.Mrs.Colesaysthestudentsherearefunandexciting,andthat“Thereis no dull moment at any-time.”

Mr. Coltrin - The new science teacher,Mr.Coltrin,hasbegunanewchapterofhislifehere inEstacada.Mr.ColtrindecidedtomovetoEstacadawithhisfianceetohopefullystartafamily.Hesaidthat,“EstacadaHighSchoolhas a family-like environment and it makescoming to work enjoyable.” An interestingthingthatMr.ColtrinhadalsomentionedwasthatEstacadaHighSchool is one the biggestschoolshehastaughtat,yetthisschoolhasthemostspirit.

Mrs. Harrison - Thenewbusiness teacher,Mrs. Harrison, has taught at many differentschools,andmanyschoolshadfourtimestheamount of students. Mrs. Harrison says thatsheenjoysthesmallergroupofkids,especial-lybecauseit’seasiertogradetheirwork.FunfactaboutMrs.Harrison:Shehastwoyorkies;one’snameisZoeyLynnNickelGrammarandtheother’snameisYogiBear.

Mrs. Franko - Thenewhealthteacher,Mrs.Franko, loves kids and grew up loving kids.Shebeganteachingasapreschoolteacherbe-cause she loved how the young children en-joyed school, and how appreciative the kidswere.Mrs.Franko

Mrs. Cintron - The new spanish teacher,Mrs.Cintron,hasbeenteachingfortwentyfiveyearsandhasenjoyeditverymuch.Mrs.Cin-tronwasoverwhelmedwithexcitementwhenshegot the jobatEstacadaHighSchool, sheeven jumpedup for joy.Shedidsay thatEs-tacadaHighSchool is verydifferent in com-parison to theNewYorkCity public schoolsthatsheusedtoteachat.Therehappenedtobeaverylargeamountofhispanicscomparedtothewhitestudentsthere,makingherjobevenmorenecessary.

Lunchissupposedtobeastudent’sfreetimetositandso-cialize, and having two lunch-es takes away the privilege ofspending a half hour talkingandlaughingwiththeirfriends.AlyssaSchultz,a junioratEs-tacada High School, doesn’tlikehaving two lunches at herschool.She’llwalkintothecaf-eteria and look around, won-deringwheretosit.Shedoesn’tsee many familiar faces, andthe ones that she does see ar-en’tpeoplefromherimmediatefriend group.As of the 2015-2016 school year, two luncheshave been introduced into theEstacadaSchoolDistrict.

Manyofthestudentsdis-approveofhavingtwolunches,while very few actually enjoyit.Thestudentshavemanydif-ferentreasonswhytheydislikethechange,andoneofthemostcommon reasons heard is be-causeoftheseparationoffriendgroups.JedRice,asenior,dis-likes having two lunches be-

causehefeelsthateveryonegotsplit up from their friends.Hesays,“Idon’thaveclasseswithanyofmyfriends,soIdon’tgettoseethematallthroughouttheday.”

Whilemanystudentsfeellike having two lunches sepa-rate friendgroups,Mrs.Bugnifeels that, “having two lunch-esprovidesaninteresting,newopportunity for more space,”andshe feels that theadminis-trators and counselors “divid-ed thestudentsnicelybetweengrades.”

Anotherproblemthathasarisenfromhavingtwolunchesis that clubs, sports, and peo-ple who are doing a projectforclassnolongerhaveatimetheycanallmeetupduringtheschool day. SummerBaraza, asenior,saysthat,“Icanimaginehavingtwoluncheswouldbeaproblem.I’mindramaclub,andwe haven’t really talked aboutwhat we’re going to do. Noteveryonecanmeetupatlunch,

andMrs.Gonzalescan’tbetheretowatcheveryone.”Nowstudents are forced tomeet upafter school, and sometimesthat’saproblemduetolackortransportationorstudentpartic-ipationinextracurriculars.

KileyGile,ajunior,whileunderstandingwhyEHSneedsto have two lunches, thinks“having two lunches is stupidbecausewedon’thaveenoughstudents at this school to sup-port two lunches.”Thisschoolhas just over 500 students, soitseemslikemoreworkonthecafeteria staff to have to sepa-rate theirworkloadwhenthereis sucha small amountof stu-dentsanyway.

On the flip side, LeslieNuno, a freshman, thinks thathaving two lunches is a goodthing. If EHS only had onelunch, “the cafeteriawould betoo packed; this way we havetimetogetourlunchandactu-allyeatitall.”

Whilemanypeoplecom-

plainabouthavingtwolunches,thereisonedistinctadvantage:Thetimelunchisactuallyeaten.Acommoncomplaint lastyearwas that people felt theywereeatinglunchtooearly,at11:15am. Mr. Schaenman, a socialstudies teacher, says, “I enjoyhaving second lunch; thatwayI’mnot eating so early.” It’s abonusforthepeoplewhohavesecond lunch, because theydon’t have to eat lunch beforenoon, so their regular sched-ulesaremoreinlinewiththeirschoolschedules.

Although some studentsand staff may enjoy this, stu-dent Erica Malan, a senior,says, “Sure, [two lunches]mightsolvetheoverpopulationissue,butsomeofusarewait-ingway too long to eat!”Thestudent body understands theneed for two lunches,butninetimes out of ten, they wouldchangeitbacksoEHSonlyhasonelunch.

ThisyearatEstacadaHigh,therewerealotofnewchang-es.OnebigswitchwasthenewWednesdaySchedule.Now,in-steadofFlexFridays, theear-ly release day is Wednesday.The new schedule has affect-edmanyofthestudentsintheschool. Junior Cody Petersonsays, “It’sweird, I don’t real-lylikeit.ImisstheFlexdays,theyreallyhelpedme.” Some people offeredthe idea of FlexWednesdays,

mimicking last year’s short-ened schedule but changingthe day to Wednesday. Codyalsoadded that theonly thinghe likes about theWednesdayswitchisthatstudentsstillgetoutearly,whichhappenstobethe only thing that remainedconsistent with previous. Ourstaff isworkingtowardsmak-ingamorecomfortablesched-ule, so changes may happen.But for now, EHS is stickingwithWednesdays.
