OUR STRIDE` ` ` `
1. Commencement of DCHP - Phase 2
The Divine Child Health Program (DCHP) commenced on 1st September 2013
in Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, Naya Raipur. The Program covers
healthcare needs of rural school going children in Chhattisgarh State through
timely detection of Defects, Diseases, Deficiencies and Disabilities through
systematic health screening.
The Phase 2 of DCHP started on 8th July 2014. This phase would focus on health
education and management apart from screening of children. During this
phase, 346 children across two schools, one primary and one middle, in
Dharsiwa block, Raipur district have been covered.
Apart from 29 conditions that are recommended to be screened as per the
guidelines of the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram, the Govt of India Program
for screening of children, 8 conditions related to ‘adolescent health concerns
have also been included under DCHP.
As part of the management plan, appropriate referral and counselling was
provided to the children and their families. Basic medication including
albendazole tablets, skin ointments, ear drops and vitamin tablets were also
provided based on the need

2. Expansion of Infrastructure at Sai Sanjeevani Hospital–
widening the scope of care
With a high birth rate, India carries an enormous burden of congenital heart
disease (CHD). Therefore, management of CHD is an important national issue
that is often overlooked despite its enormity and severity. The resources are
scarce and the infrastructure, abysmally limited to reach out and serve both
the need and the needy.
Pediatric Cardiac Care in India is still in its infancy. There are very few
specialized pediatric cardiac care centers in India, and most of them are
concentrated in the developed / urban geographies.
Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, Naya Raipur, undertook specialized and
focused pediatric heart care in February 2014. As on date, over 230 children
with CHD have been successfully treated, totally free of charge.
In order to further our address to this national need, we are now working to
expand and strengthen our infrastructure. In the coming months, we will be
commencing 2 more State of the Art Operation Theaters, an 8 bedded high
dependency ICU, a 12 bedded step down ICU and 20 bedded ward.
Dedicated to Pediatric Heart Care, the new infrastructure will enable
incremental procedures and thereby strengthen our endeavor to serve more
children with Congenital Heart Disease.

OUR HEART` ` ` `
In this section of the newsletter we share with you a few stories of little hearts
that have touched us deeply.
1. God’s Grace in Time- The story of Megha Sahu
Age : 2 months
From : Palaud Village, Chhattisgarh
Operated on : 5th July 2014
“अन्य अस्पतालों में, किसी भी सेवा िे पहले पैसे जमा िरने होते हैं" (Across hospitalsbefore availing any services, one needs to deposit money) . These words
describe the plight of Megha’s parents, who were looking for affordable
healthcare for their baby.
The family belonged to a village less than 5 kms from Sai Sanjeevani. They were
devastated when they knew of the condition of their baby. Not knowing of
Sanjeevani initially, they knocked the doors of many a hospital in Raipur trying
to find a way forward. Being a homeopathy doctor himself, what shocked
Megha’s father was the priority being given to money over actual provision of
care across modern medical institutions.

10
Baby Megha was brought to Sanjeevani with a history of breathing difficulty
since 2 weeks of life, that had recently got aggravated .
Diagnosis and treatment
The baby was evaluated and found to have severe long segment Co-
arctation of Aorta; sever LV dysfunction and no PDA indicating an impending
cardiogenic collapse. The baby was admitted to the hospital in an
emergency, and within an hour, post necessary investigations, the baby was
taken up for a high risk Co-arctation repair
The baby underwent successful repair and was electively ventilated for the
next 24 hours. The baby was then shifted to the Step down ICU after 48 hours
and then upon regular establishment of breast feeding pattern, she was
shifted to the post-op ward (MatruChhaya) 72 hours after surgical repair.
The baby’s heart improved well in the post-op period and was successfully
discharged on the 7th day after operation. The pre-discharge ECHO showed
good result, offering a near normal life without further interventions.
Their experience
“सत्य साई संजीवनी सब अस्पताल से बेहतर है। भगवान से इतनी कामना है कक कोई बच्चेको भी हार्ट की बीमारी ना हो, और अगर हो, तो उनपे इतना कृपा बक्ष दे कक वो संजीवनीअस्पताल के बारे में जान पाए और समय पर अपने बच्चे को यहााँ लेके आ पाए ।”
( Satya Sai Sanjeevani is better than all hospitals. I pray to God that no child
should suffer from a heart condition, and if he/she does, I pray that God
showers enough grace on them so that they get to know about Sanjeevani and
in time are able to get the child to Sanjeevani.)
What they would want her to become
“इसको बड़ा करके, डॉक्र्र बनाएाँगे। खदु जो परेशानी देखा है, आशा है कक सामने वालों का भीपरेशानी समझके इलाज करेगी”( When she grows older, we will make her a doctor. Since she has been
through the difficulty, we wish that she will treat patients with an empathetic
approach)

2. A mother’s perseverance - The story of Taniya Gajabhy
Age : 13 months
From : Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh
Operated on : 12th July 2014
Taniya was only 1.4 kgs when she was born and had multiple admissions to the
hospital due to prolonged chest infections. She also was diagnosed bilateral
cataract and congenital rubella syndrome. While the parents wondered
where to start the treatment and rehabilitation process, the first step that was
guided to them was of the bilateral cataract extraction when she was 7
months old. But further ophthalmic rehabilitation was becoming difficult as
doctors wanted cardiological fitness and clearance.
It was then that a close friend of theirs, who is an ardent devotee of Sri Sathya
Sai Baba, informed them of Sanjeevani in Raipur.
Diagnosis and Preparation
Her complete cardiological evaluation revealed a large PDA. Her case was
discussed in a multidisciplinary meeting and also considering the
developmental delays, the child appeared a very high risk for anesthesia
required for the PDA ligation procedure. The baby was thus started on
antifailure measures and the parents were advised to regularly follow up for
developmental and cardiac status.
Pic: Taniya with her father – Pramod Gajabhy and
mother – Shalini Gajabhy
12
Decision Time
With the dedication of the parents and the utter will of her mother, after over 6
months, Taniya had caught up with some developmental milestones, though
delayed, that increased the hopes of the medical team with respect to a
better post-op anesthetic tolerance. The parents also persisted that their baby
should be given the chance of life. Post further deliberations, it was decided to
do a high risk PDA ligation
Surgery
The baby underwent surgical ligation in the same week and was successfully
weaned and extubated by the Pediatric Cardiac Intensivist. She was closely
monitored and slowly was started on regular feeding pattern. 3 days later, the
baby was shifted to the post-op ward and was eventually discharged.
Swami’s response to Tanya’s mother’s perseverance
The parents were delighted that they could now proceed with the ophthalmic
rehabilitation of the child and were praying that they be guided to the right
place. On the day of her discharge, one of Sanjeevani’s guests, who had
come to see and experience Sanjeevani for a day, met the girl’s parents and
volunteered to help them for the baby’s ophthalmic treatment. For all at
Sanjeevani, this looked like Swami’s response to the determination of Taniya’s
mother to get her cured and her undying faith on him.
Their experience
“एक ववश्वास था कक अगर मेरी बेर्ी यहााँ ठीक हो जाती है तो इसको ज़ ंदगी भर कोईतकलीफ नहीं होगी। और ऐसा ही हुआ । सही में यहााँ दावा के साथ-साथ दआुओं का असरहोता है। ”
( I had the confidence that if my daughter becomes fine here, she will not have
any trouble for the rest of her life. And that is exactly what happened. Truly
here, along with the medicines, it is prayers and goodwill that have an effect
on the children )

2. Destiny’s Child - The story of Ujjwal Nagpure
Age : 18 months
From : Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh
Operated on : 23rd June 2014
18 month old, Ujjwal was brought by his parents with a severe breathing
difficulty , with a past history of frequent chest infection and poor weight gain.
Having gone to a number of private hospitals earlier only be faced with the
reality of how expensive surgery would be, they kept postponing it with the
hope of finding more affordable care. However, the difficulty that Ujjwal was
facing in breathing this time was severe and in time, the divine intervened in
the form of a neighbour who had heard of Sanjeevani. They wasted no time
and rushed him immediately.
Diagnosis and Surgery
His complete cardiac evaluation revealed severe segmental co-arctation of
Aorta with globular dilated, dysfunctional and poorly contracting Left Ventricle
with a small PDA supplying descending Aorta.
Considering the declining cardiac status of the child, upon detailed discussions
with his parents, the child underwent extended end-to-end anastamosis repair
of Co-arctation with PDA interruption.

Post – op ordeal for Ujjwal
Due to the poor cardiac contractility, the baby was electively ventilated for 48
hours and weaned slowly and extubated from mechanical ventilatory support.
Initially the baby could not breathe properly and needed reintubation and
mechanical ventilatory support. The baby also had cardiac arrests due to the
worsening contractility but could be successfully revived each time by the
Intensive Care Team that continued supporting the poor cardiac function with
high dose of medicines and ventilator support.
This battle of survival continued for over 2 weeks . Finally to avoid sound box
damage due to long term ventilator support, the baby underwent a
tracheostomy procedure on day 15 post surgery. The baby had better
breathing pattern but needed further care as because the initially collapsed
left lung re-expanded with chest physiotherapy, the other lung had lobar
pneumonia that needed aggressive medicinal treatment.
The Divine hand
Every time the baby faced a difficult situation, whether an arrest or pnemonia,
destiny seemed to disagree with the symptom and helped revive the baby to
the next stage. And finally one day, the divine hand was felt clearly when the
baby’s heart suddenly began to show remarkable improvement that surprised
the medical team. Excited with this miracle, the team continued their care.
The Revival
Slowly, the baby’s lungs began to improve and finally the tracheostomy was
removed. the baby began developing a good appetite and started
demanding frequent meals. Thereon, his increasing feedings resulted in a
healthy gain of weight. It was like the whole ordeal was just completely turned
towards hope and he sprang back to life.
Apt to his name which means ‘bright’, destiny surely has plans that are filled
with hope and brightness for this little child.

OUR SANJEEVANI` ` ` `
This month, as part of the ‘Our Sanjeevani,, we pay respect to the guru who
leads the Center for Pediatric Heart Care at Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital.
16
It is our honour to introduce Dr Krishna Manohar, who has committed
himself into an eternal bond of selfless love with little hearts and whose life
has become one with the rhythm of the every tender heart he is ushered to
care for. Dr Krishna Manohar hails from Anchal village, Kerala. As a sign of
destiny, he was born in the same year when open-heart surgery became
popular in the world – 1956.
His Journey so far - After his medical graduation from Trivandrum and Post
Graduation from Calicut (Kerala), he began his journey in pediatric cardiac
surgery in Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute, Trivandrum, under his first guru Padma
Vibhushan, Dr M S Valiathan. After 23 years, he then served in Frontier
Lifeline in Chennai under his next guru, Padma Shri, Dr K M Cherian , who is
considered the father of Cardiac Surgery in India. Through the period of his
experience in these two renowned institutions of Heart Care, Dr Krishna
Manohar distinguished himself as a pediatric cardiac surgeon
extraordinaire, perfectly balancing surgical and academic excellence.
Senior Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon, Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani
“For a Doctor, Patient is GOD.
Caring for patients is the best
form of worship.”
Dr Krishna Manohar

17
His Inspiration – After working directly with stalwarts like Dr. M S Valiathan and
Dr. K M Cherian, Dr Krishna Manohar realized the true potential this profession
gives in achieving unsullied self satisfaction. With time, he realized that the
deeper meaning to this opportunity is the quintessential truth - “Tat tvam
asi”, which means “that is you”. To see God in everybody, he feels, is not just
a spiritual goal but is an essential feeling a surgeon needs to carry in his/her
heart, while caring for patients as reflections of God.
“Sri Sathya Sai Baba is
the God for Pediatric
Cardiac Surgery.”
Dr Krishna Manohar
Journey to Sai Sanjeevani - It was in 1991 that
Dr Krishna Manohar first learnt about the
Institute of medical excellence that Sri Sathya
Sai Baba had commenced to conduct free
cardiac surgeries in Puttaparthi. This had not
only filled Dr.Krishna Manohar’s heart with
hope, but also a selfless prayer that a similar
institution should be established for
championing Pediatric Cardiac Care
exclusively.
It was after 2 decades that his guru Dr M S Valiathan informed him about Sri
Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, Naya Raipur and advised him to set up a
pediatric cardiac team here in order to fulfill his dream – to provide quality
pediatric cardiac care totally free of charge to all. Since February 2014, Dr
Krishna Manohar and his team has been incessantly working towards
translating this dream into a reality with utmost dedication and love.
“Life is God’s Magic. If you want to experience the real magic, it is here in
Raipur. Come and See it . . .”

It was fascinating to learn about its eco-friendly architecture and the state of the art
facilities of Sai Sowbhagyam. The building promises to be a work of art, which in turn
will encourage the long forgotten Indian art and sculpture. The huge statue of Lord
Padmanabha in the premises is a sight to behold.
I was incredibly impressed by everything I saw. From the peaceful vicinity, greenery
and the adjacent lake to those who I interacted with at the facilities, an extremely
motivated and humble group of individuals. Even the Hon'ble CM of the state spoke
very highly of the hospital.”
“I, along with my family, had the honourand privilege of visiting the Sai
