Yesterday, Pirate Peter and Pirate Kate found a map that will lead them to buried treasure. However, they discovered the only way to unlock the treasure chest is to write a story about their favorite food and read the story to the chest once it’s complete to see if it opens! Pirate Peter and Pirate Kate both love pizza, so they decided to write a story about pizza, while demonstrating their knowledge of the writing process. In this story, the concepts of prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing will be shown as Pirate Peter and Pirate Kate embark on their fabulous adventure. Let’s start our adventure!

The writing process consists of four very important steps: prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing. Prewriting is forming and organizing ideas before you begin writing. Aspects of prewriting include planning, researching, outlining, diagramming, and storyboarding. Drafting is a stage in the writing process where a writer organizes information and ideas into sentences and paragraphs. Revising is the process of re-reading one’s work and making changes that are beneficial to the final product. Lastly, editing involves correction and modifications of an essay to improve the final product. An example would be checking one’s essay for grammatical errors.

Pirate Peter: Hi Pirate Kate! Pirate Kate: Hi Pirate Peter! Are you ready to go on an adventure to find the buried treasure?Pirate Peter: Of course! It’s prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing right? Pirate Peter: Yes, you are correct! Pirate Kate: Awesome! Pirate Peter: Let’s make a concept map about pizza our favorite types of pizza!

Prewriting is the first stage of the writing process, typically followed by drafting, revision, editing and publishing. Elements of prewriting may include planning, research, outlining, diagramming, storyboarding or clustering (for a technique similar to clustering, see mindmapping).

DraftingPirate Kate: I think we did a great job with the first step of the writing process, prewriting!Pirate Peter: I agree! Our concept map clearly explains each type of pizza we love! It’s awesome!Pirate Kate: Now we must explain the concept of drafting very efficiently because I really want to see what’s inside of the treasure chest!Pirate Peter: Ok, let’s begin!

SECTION 2

Pirate Peter: I think we did a good job on the first draft of our essay, but I think after the revision and editing process our essay can be great! Pirate Kate: I agree! I think we can do a better job of re-stating our thesis statement, “There are multiple different types of pizza, and I have concluded over the years that each individual has different preferences of the types of pizza they prefer” in the conclusion.Pirate Peter: Yes we should definitely re-state the thesis statement in our conclusion so the readers really understand what the purpose of our essay is. Also, I think we could make our thesis statement better if we make the wording more clear. For example, instead of saying, “There are multiple different types of pizza, and I have concluded over the years that each individual has different preferences of the types of pizza they prefer”, we could instead say, “There are many different types of pizza, and over the years I have concluded that each individual has different preferences about the way they like their pizza.”

The revising process is an important step in the writing process.

CHAPTER 4

RevisingPirate Kate: Let’s get started with the revising process!Pirate Peter: First let’s review what the revising process is.

Page 16: The Great Writing Adventures of Pirate Peter and Pirate Kate

! • Revising your story is very important. Revising just means that you are re-reading your story and answering these questions: • Does the essay fit the thesis? • Does each paragraph have a topic sentence? • Does it have smooth transitions between paragraphs? • Does it have any mistakes? • Do you have enough support in all paragraphs? • Is your paper in proper order? • Do you have an introduction and a conclusion?

Pirate Peter: I think it’s really impor-tant that we answer all these questions clearly in order to make our essay the best!

• Does the essay fit the thesis?

• Does each paragraph have a topic sentence?

• Does it have smooth transitions between paragraphs?

• Does it have any mistakes?

• Do you have enough support in all paragraphs?

• Is your paper in proper order? • Do you have an introduction and a conclusion?

SECTION 3

4

Pirate Kate: Our checklist looks really good! Now we have to go back and fix our mistakes!Pirate Peter: Yes I agree! I think we showed the writing process well, but we have some grammar errors that we need to change. Pirate Kate: Yeah, I think our thesis statement is good but we can make it even better.

New thesis statement: Since there are many different types of pizza that exist worldwide, we have concluded everyone has different preferences and opinions about pizza.

Page 19: The Great Writing Adventures of Pirate Peter and Pirate Kate

The editing process is the last step in the writing process! You must complete this step to make sure your story is perfect!

Editing

Pirate Peter and Pirate Kate are almost done with their story!

• Editing is where you check your spell-ing, grammar and mechanics. Spell check is your friend! It might be in your best interest to take a look, and usually four eyes are better than two. Have a friend look over it, or take it to the writing center for extra help.
