• WWI was a global conflict that took place mostly in Europe between 1914 - 1918
• It involved the biggest, most powerful industrialized countries in the world
• Believed to be “war to end all wars”
• WWI was a total war
• WWI saw lots of trench warfare and many new technologies

• Imperialism is when an Empire maintains political and/or economic control over another nation based on domination

• Nationalism is the unique, strong cultural identity of a people based on common language, religion and national symbols
• Nationalism helped unite the peoples in Germany, Italy as countries under a central government
• There was tension resulting from ethnic nationalism in the Balkan Region

• Serbs in the city of Sarajevo didn’t want to be part of Austria-Hungary
• The Black Hand was a Serbian Nationalist Group, sometimes known for violence
• The Austro-Hungarian Emperor tried to improve relations with the Serbs by sending his Nephew Franz Ferdinand to Sarajevo
The Assassination
• June 28, 1914: Gavrillo Princep shot and killed the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand
• The Alliance System comes into play and WWI begins
