COURSE AT A GLANCE
COURSE DESCRIPTION This course serves to advance the knowledge of the functions of management, the underlying theories and literature
associated with the management discipline, and build students' understanding of the relationships across organizational
and business functions. Students grapple with current management problems and emerging solutions applied in the
context of the organization.
COURSE DESIGN This course has been designed to explore the basic elements of organizational management. The foundation of
management, which includes planning, organization, staffing, influence and control will be addressed and researched
throughout the course. The content and activities in this course related to these five pillars of management will allow
students to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of management theory, structure, strategy, processes, and
practice.
This course has been designed for the individual student. That does not mean that students cannot collaborate and work on
assignments as teams or groups. Indeed, collaborative efforts should raise the level of learning synergy as one student’s
instructional efforts reinforce that individual’s learning experience. However, the final measure of learning will be
conducted on an individual basis and by the performance of that individual in addressing classroom activity, course
assignments, and a Final Paper.
Reading the text and the assigned peer-reviewed journal articles will be the primary sources of formal knowledge for each
student. Students will be expected to read each of the chapters and articles as sequenced through the course. In doing so,
students will be measured on how well they understand the subject matter, how adept they are at recognizing situations in
which the subject matter is at hand, and how efficiently they translate and apply this knowledge to the five pillars of
management.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to
1. Analyze the various roles managers play in an organization and how these roles support organizational success.
6
MGT601: THE FUNCTIONS OF MODERN MANAGEMENT COURSE GUIDE
2. Assess leading and controlling practices in solving organizational challenges.
3. Evaluate manager’s use of systems assisting in the deployment of assets across organizational functions and
reporting structures.
4. Analyze the relationship of strategic planning and human resource alignment.
5. Evaluate the role of an executive-level manager and the tools available for performing the executive-level duties.
6. Develop an operational plan that integrates functional interests across the organization.

COURSE GRADING
Multiple measures of assessment are used in the course, allowing students opportunities to demonstrate their learning in
more than one way and giving consideration to individual learning styles. Course components that will be assessed are
noted below.
DISCUSSIONS Each week students will participate in online discussions with classmates, which are related to the week’s readings. These
discussions replace the interactive dialogue that occurs in the traditional classroom setting. Each week, students’ initial
discussion posts are due by 11:59 p.m. (of the time zone in which each student resides) on Day 3 (Thursday). Students
will have until 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 (the following Monday) to make the required minimum number of response posts to
classmates. Discussions represent 36.5% of the overall course grade.
QUIZ In Week Three, students will demonstrate and reinforce their understanding of the week’s content by taking an open-book
quiz. Students have up to 12 hours to complete the quiz once they begin. The quiz must be completed in one sitting, by
Day 6 of the week in which it is due. The questions are multiple choice and true/false. The Quiz represents 15% of the
overall course grade.
ASSIGNMENTS There is a written assignment due in Weeks Two, Four, and Five of this course. These assignments must reflect college-
level writing and critical thinking. Assignments represent 23% of the overall course grade.
END OF COURSE SURVEY In Week Six, you will have the opportunity to complete the End of Course Survey, which is a short evaluation tool that
allows each student to express their opinion of the course design and instructional delivery. This is your chance to provide
9
MGT601: THE FUNCTIONS OF MODERN MANAGEMENT COURSE GUIDE
the university and program with valuable feedback that will allow us to evaluate the effectiveness of both the course and
your instructor. Your opinions are a valuable component of the university’s continuous improvement plan as the results of
these surveys are reviewed by instructors and course designers to improve course development and instructional practices.
Since evaluating the quality of your educational experience can be an important learning tool, you will receive 0.5 points
for completing this survey. To complete the survey, please watch for an email from [email protected] entitled
“Ashford University End of Course Survey”. Then, simply click on the link within the email line that reads “Please follow
this link to complete the End of Course Survey here” no later than the last day of the course. After you have completed the
End of Course Survey, please complete the one question quiz to receive your points. If for any reason you wish not to
complete the survey, you may do so and still receive the 0.5 points by completing the one question quiz. The End of
Course Survey represents 0.5% of the overall course grade.
FINAL PAPER The final assignment for this course is an Operational Plan. The Final Paper represents 25% of the overall course
grade.

2. Explain the types of changes that can occur in an organization.

Introduction
Organizational change is deemed as a necessity in a competitive and ever-changing market environment. The ability to

changes and demands of the external market of competitors and consumers.
The elements of power and authority within the organizational setting establish the structure for reviewing plans and
goals, determining work activities, classifying and grouping activities, assigning work and delegating authority, and
designing a hierarchy of relationships. Moreover, power and authority are essential components of ensuring efficient
allocation of resources, such as people, money, and time to support the strategic organizational plan.
