BRIGHTON & HOVE MOTOR CLUB PRESENT
THE FROSTS BRIGHTONNATIONAL SPEED TRIALS
SATURDAY 10TH SEPTEMBER 2005£5.00 OFFICIAL PROGRAMME Sponsored by
A MESSAGE FROM OUR MAIN SPONSORS - FROSTS CARS
Congratulations are in order. What an achievement. For we have reached a proudlandmark, not only for local motoring history but also nationally.
Yes, it is now 100 years since the first Brighton National Speed Trials was staged. Today,it is the longest running event of its kind in the country and we take our hats off to theBrighton and Hove Motor Club, organisers since the late 1920s, for the years ofdedication they have shown in making this such a fantastic spectacle.
It's impossible to say how many spectators have witnessed the Speed Trials since 1905,but we can say for certain that it runs into millions.
Looking ahead, its popularity shows no signs of diminishing. Every year crowds flock to allvantage points along Marine Drive. Once again this year, the event has beenoversubscribed by competitors. Motor enthusiasts just love competing here!
The length of the course has altered over time; in 1905, for instance, the event wasstaged over four days with different distances being used. However, from 1923 andincluding every Trials held up to the Second World War, everyone raced over astanding-start half mile. After the War, the course was extended to a standing startkilometre, an arrangement which lasted until 1968. Then, following the cancelled event of1969, the Speed Trials chopped and changed between a quarter mile, half mile andkilometre format. However, from 1993, with ever-increasing speeds, it reverted to aquarter mile standing start, which is how it remains to this day.
As one of the largest car retailers in the south of England, Frosts are proud to be mainsponsors in this Centenary Year. We first sponsored the event back in 1991 and are todaythe longest serving sponsors with 15 years unbroken support. We remain committed tothis magnificent spectacle and to supporting the sterling work put in by the Brighton andHove Motor Club.
We would also like to mention a very special event which is taking place next month. It'sthe Brighton National Speed Trials Centenary Dinner which is being held in the EmpressRoom at the Grand Hotel in Brighton. This star studded, black tie dinner includes achampagne reception and a well-known after dinner speaker. Tickets are £55 per head. For further information contact Sarah Lobo of the Brighton and Hove Motor Club on01273421297.Or contact the Club's website www.brightonandhovemotorclub.co.uk
Don't forget, this September provides the latest opportunity for you to buy a new car withthe latest registration plate change. And since we are main Vauxhall, Jaguar, Lotus,Chrysler, Jeep, SEAT and most recently Saab dealers, there's no shortage of choice atFrosts. See the back page for contact details.
Alternatively, our award winning web site www.frosts4cars.co.uk provides anunprecedented opportunity to source our comprehensive choice of used cars.
Finally, in this special year, we trust all competitors and spectators have a safe and trulymemorable day at the 2005 Centenary Speed Trials.

VINTAGE AND HISTORIC
The Vintage and Historic Class has always produced an interesting and varied entry to reflect the enthusiasm for the pre-warand classic racing period up to December 1959. This year we have an excellent selection of mainly sports carsfrom the period. The contrast between the smaller high rewing engines of the Alta and Bugatti with the large engined Bentleys and MercurySpecials will giveadded interest to the class. However, they will be hard pressed to catch the very fast Cooper T45 ofNeil Twyman who must be favourite to take the outright class win.
As always the class is dominated by large capacity cars Bob Burrell, long time exponent of large Bentieys, will use the power of hismighty 8 litre V12 to good effect The single seater supercharged Alta is a past Brighton winner, we can be confident of apolished and fast time by David Baldock. RichardAshmead and Robert Appleby bring a more modern flavour with Lotus and JohnQuenby joins the fun with the Cooper Bristol.
As is a tradition at Brighton we have a race within a race. The VSCC Handicap. The eligible cars have handicap times set by theVintage Sports Car Club who have detailed records of the past performance of all the entrants and know the score very well.
VeteranTomDelany will want to add to his recent Silverstone win in the Lea Francis. Hubert Fabri will be on form in the 8 litre Bentleypursued by the Bentleys of Richard Wade ,Stewart Couch and Bob Burrell. Any of the small capacity cars could pull arabbit out of the hat and surprise the Handicappers with a sharp time
The fun of a handicap is that every driver is in with a sporting chance and may the best driver win.2005 NORMAN GOODMAN

The Brighton Speed Trials Centenary - The Motorcycles
We stand just into the twenty-first century, one hundred years ago men, the Edwardian greats, stood looking forward
into the twentieth century. That noted figure of Brighton Sir Harry Preston had the wisdom and foresight to join with
others of the time in promoting the new motoring age of the internal combustion engine. That legacy that he
created i.e. The Brighton Speed Trials stands as a still progressive monument to his foresight, within that original
group of pioneers of motor cars were the few motorcyclists, notably from that very first event in 1905 Henri Cissac, who thrust off the original start line down at Black Rock by a couple of his trusty assistantsmanaged to cover the then mile long course at the incredible speed average of no less than
ninety seven miles per hour. Although that average was distorted by the methods of recording in those very early
days the technological progress over the ensuing years now sees the incredible performances displayed by the
current series of "Super-bikes", particularly shown by last years top run in the fastest six event when Phil Wood set
the new outright course record at 8.87 seconds and a thunderous terminal speed of 178mph. I wonder what Sir
Harry Preston would have thought of that as a marker of progress in one hundred years? In front of you running
along the beach line is the old Volks Electric Railway, compare that with the TGV howling it's way through SouthernEurope at speeds of 180 MPH plus, its passengers coolly accepting those speeds calmly, such is progress that
provides the motive forces now available to all. There is a difference however in the rapid progress of today's
motorcycle at such and similar speeds where the rider has to cope in direct contact with the elements and surfaces
available, skill has to be paramount.
Every year we have the task, certainly never an easy task, of selecting for invitation the fifty five riders involved, as
always the entry is heavily over subscribed and we have the distasteful task of refusing many of our sports top
exponents. Always it is in our minds to provide top performances plus historic markers of our sports progression,
for we do believe that history must never simply be ignored. This year has some interesting examples, one of our
regulars Chris IIlman, usually running the oldest machine i.e. his 1923 single cylinder Zenith, has
managed to persuade the owner of the Ex Ernie Woods Norton, two of everything mag's, carb's, all alloy J.A.P
engine, developed for the Cooper racing cars, to run at Brighton once again. The bike was one of the fifties
specials built by the late Francis Williams from Saltdean, known in the game as the "Learned Professor of Sprint",
this he built especially conceived to attack the Madeira Drive record. The late Ernie Woods came close in the early
sixties taking home the Dolphin Trophy for fastest time of day by a motorcycle, but unfortunately he failed to take the
course record for a motorcycle.
It is of note that whilst the top solo runs are made by the current series of super bikes, a look into the side carspecialists demonstrates that there are those who still use as a basic power unit the Vee Twin Vincent engine as thepower unit, a unit that remarkably is rated as a ''Vintage'' engine being originated from the early fifties! Certainly
there is little "Vintage" about its output once developed for the present era by its owner John Renwick.
As a "Stop Press" to this report we know that the Fastest Six contenders group holds some impressive stuff. We
know that some of the very latest kit is coming out and by current performance reports the "Fireworks" could
promise some superb performances, let us hope that the weather will as usual be kind to us all.
So present day technology proceeds and one has to wonder just what the future will hold in this fast moving world,
having been intimately involved over the past forty odd years I envy what the future holds for the enthusiast if they
derive as much fun and friendship as I have over the years they will be truly rewarded.
We have to offer our thanks and congratulations to the Brighton and Hove Motor Club for their
continued invitations to us "The Bike Boys", to Brighton City Council for their most welcome
support, to Frosts for their valued support and not forgetting all those folks male and female who without stint or
complaint put so much of their own time and considerable effort into the smooth running of thiswonderful and
sporting day out ON THE SEASIDE of dear old Brighton City.
