Why energy efficiency actions in lighting? Why energy efficiency actions in lighting?
• Lighting accounts for a large share of electricity consumption:– residential lighting consumption ca. 90 TWh– tertiary and industry lighting consumption ca. 150 TWh
• Large and cost-effective saving potential of about 30%
• Lighting is a visible and key area to promote energy efficiency
An initiative of theEUROPEANCOMMISSION
What is the Commission doing in lighting? What is the Commission doing in lighting?
• Actions have been launched at the beginning of the 90s both for the residential and the tertiary sectors
• Residential lighting actions:– Mandatory Energy Labelling for lamps;– European Quality Charter for CFLs;– European Design competition “Lights of the
Future”

• All new installations shall be chosen so that no alternative installation exists that would:– (1) maintain or improve the lighting quality
provided by the chosen installation and– (2) consume less electricity and– (3) represent a supplementary investment that
would pass the profitability test
