Senior Challenges Discussion, Continued
What condition raises the risk of death by 14 percent, increases the likelihood that a person will develop
Alzheimer’s disease, weakens the immune system, raises blood pressure, leads to sleep problems and even
causes changes on the genetic level? And maybe worse for us than obesity – or even smoking? The condition, say a host of researchers, is called loneliness.
Again this month, we will discuss challenges that we, as seniors, face contributing to this issue.
During the past decade, numerous experts have shown that the human drive to spend time with others is as
strong as hunger and thirst, and that loneliness is a major health risk. The Association for Psychological Science published a collection of studies about loneliness. These researchers say that older Americans today
face an epidemic of loneliness. Senior services agencies, families and seniors themselves are called upon to
help overcome barriers to social connection.
Depression. An estimated 20 percent of seniors experience depression, which can range from a minor problem to a life-threatening illness. Depression is treated with medication, counseling and lifestyle changes –
and one of the most important lifestyle “treatments” is to spend more time with others. It’s so important to interrupt the cycle of depression and isolation. Make a point of adding extra social opportunities to your
life – and seek help right away if feelings of sadness and lack of energy persist. Consider a support group for
the companionship, and for practical help with the issues you might be dealing with.
As members of the Council Board, we are always trying to recruit new members and help people become
more interested in the Center. The Center has so much to offer, classes, guest speakers, entertainment, and fun
events ….and yet many of these are not well attended. Please consider joining us and spending even more time here than you already do.
We can use more volunteers and WELCOME YOU!

Letter From the President of the Council
Greetings to everyone! I hope your Spring is well under way and that you are healthy and strong. This is
a beautiful time of year as we shake off the ice of Winter and embrace the coming warm weather.
Catonsville Senior Center is ready for Spring with a
lengthy list of activities and events coming up. We
would love to have you join us at the Center as you try
your hand at something new. Maybe you have never
taken an Art Class, or thought about Piano lessons?
Perhaps learning more about Wine would interest you?
Whatever your interest, we most likely have something
for you. Thanks to all for a very successful Cash Bingo
that was held last month, we raised a good deal of
money for the center and everyone had a great time.
We hope you can join us on Monday, June 27th for our
Installation of Officers. A special lunch will be planned,
a quarterly report will be given and we will install our
officers for the 2016-2017 year.
Remember to enjoy the Spring weather, but as always,
be prepared when you go outside with a 30+ sunblock.
Melanoma is no laughing matter! Have fun, and enjoy
our beautiful center, we look forward to seeing you
soon!
David Bond, Council President
