Audience polling overview
• Votes can run in two ways; an open ended amount of time or with a countdown timer
• Our recommended time is 10 seconds however it can be set to any duration
• For maximum impact a music sting usually accompanies the countdown
• We take a verbal cue from the presenter such as ‘please vote now’ to co-ordinate opening the poll
• A benefit of the Connector handset is that it shows the available options on the device; providing increased selection assurance
• Delegates can use the roller ball or number key to select answers
• When the countdown finishes or the poll is closed, the results will instantly appear on the main screen

External Data Comparisons
• Compare your audience’s responses with the results of known survey data
• Perfect for year on year comparisons
Impromptu questions
• Sometimes a great question will come to a presenter during the presentation
• Simply ask for a Yes/No vote (for example) and verbally pose the question to the audience
• If a delegate submits a great question (via a text message or the Connector microphone), it can be instantly posed to the whole audience via an ‘on the fly’ vote
• The session becomes more reactive / spontaneous making the presentation more dynamic
Evaluation questions
• While you have your audience’s attention and they are gathered in one place, get instant in the moment feedback
• Evaluation questions could be on the meeting as a whole, individual presentations, content, venue, catering, AV or even the interactive technology
• There will be a higher response rate than paper feedback
• The data is already electronic, so no need to collate the responses
• Results can be hidden, so the audience can be honest without causing offence
• Any type of question can be used but rating is the most popular
• Use in collaboration with the texting functionality for more in-depth feedback
Quizzes
• Use any question type to create scored quiz questions
• Scoreboards can be added to the presentation to show the scores at any point
• Quizzes can be for individuals, teams or both
• Add speed scoring to increase the tension and to help avoid tied scores

With the use of smartcards text responses can be identified by name
How texting can be used:
• The text function improves Q&A sessions: Having the texting feature active during presentations allows delegates to submit in the moment questions and comments. These can be instantly relayed to the facilitator (after approval) so they can plan for the Q&A sessions – i.e. which questions to deal with, in which order, which panellist to pose them to and also to prepare responses for challenging questions
• The benefit of messaging over microphones for sensitive topics:There may be meetings/sessions where certain topics may wish to be avoided, using the texting function gives a facilitator this control
• Enable those who may not wish to ask a verbal question to have a voice: For example they may feel intimidated or they may not be speaking in their first language
• Prevent the same outspoken people dominating the dialogue
How texting can be used:
• Workshop feedback:Have attendees discuss a topic amongst themselves and then submit their thoughts and ideas. For example “What are the top 3 challenges we should focus on in the next 12 months?”
• Have a text question on screen during walk in:“Where are you from?”“How are you feeling?”“What do you hope to get out of today?”
• Have a text question on screen during walk out:“Please provide feedback on today’s meeting”“What is your most significant take away message?”
Controlling messaging
• A bespoke application is used to manage the messages received
• This enables filtering, organising, editing and displaying of messages
• Selected/approved messages can be shared wirelessly with the presenter or facilitator - relayed to them via a tablet device
• Alternatively, messages can be displayed on the main screen
• Messaging can be switched on and off as desired during the meeting
• All messages received are saved
Message display on the facilitator’s tablet
• The facilitator/presenter can scroll, highlight and collapse messages
• Questions and comments can be identified or anonymous when relayed to the tablet
• This solution can also be used by the event organisers to send instructions to the presenters

Richard Jenkins

Phillip Thompson
Mary Anderson
Main screen message display
• A scrolling display can be used to show moderated messages on the main screen
• Formatting can be modified to match your branding and the scrolling speed is variable
• Alternatively, just a single message can be displayed
• A further option is a scrolling banner running across the screen in a ‘Ticker Tape’ style
Word Cloud message display
• Word Clouds are impactful ways of displaying messages
• These can be static images or dynamically changing displays as words are added from new messages
• The most asked words appear largest in the Word Cloud
Microphone Instruction Slide
Microphone
Hold the keypad 10 centimetres away from your mouth and speak clearly
Microphone Key
Push-to-talk (PTT) mode: Press and hold to open the microphone then release to close
Can also be used in a press on / press off (Latch) mode
Connector Microphone
• The Connector contains a high quality microphone
• With this capability every user can have their say as the Connector puts a microphone in every delegate’s hand
• With the use of a smartcard (for identification purposes), attendees can join a queue to speak
• Via a tablet display of the queue, facilitators can select who they would like to speak next
How microphones can be used:
• Make your Q&A sessions more efficient - Delegates do not need to wait for a handheld microphone to be passed to them, they already have one in their hands! This potentially means more time for additional questions
• Combined with the messaging function make Q&A sessions more dynamic - Double the opportunity for questions and comments
• A voice for all - Less confident delegates can ask a verbal question discreetly from their seat – no moving to a microphone stand or obviously having a handheld passed to them
• Expand on messages - If someone sends an interesting text message, ask them to use the microphone to expand on their comment
• Feedback sessions - This is the ideal tool for roundtable discussions or workshop feedback
• Control - Only one microphone can ever be live at a time and Lumi can enable/disable the system instantly
Smartcards
• Identify and track all voting and text responses
• Works across multiple sessions or days
• Identify who is using a microphone
• Named scoreboards for quizzes
• Attendance tracking
• The card can double up as a badge
• Pre-populate the smartcard with your delegates’ demographic data (e.g. region, department, role). This can be used for live breakdowns and enhances reporting after the meeting
Results and reporting
• After your meeting you will receive a copy of your results in PowerPoint
• You will also receive more detailed reports in Excel which are:
- Summary of the voting results- Breakdown of results by question- Breakdown of results by participant- Text messages received- Attendance records [if smartcards
are used]
Screens• High resolution colour screen
• Use this to show company or sponsor logos, meeting agendas, instructions and speaker biographies
• Content can be pushed to the device screen at a given point, or users can navigate through the user interface
• All content needs to be loaded onto the devices prior to distribution

Planning your questions:• Invest time in creating your questions
Formulating interesting, creative and challenging questions takes time, avoid leaving this part of your presentation to the last minute
• Avoid AmbiguityAsk a colleague to check your questions; to ensure their meaning is clear
• Challenge your audienceEasy questions with obvious answers will not engage your audience as much as ones that will make them think. By asking trivial or superficial questions you may actually cause offence to your audience
• Sometimes less is moreA small number of pertinent questions can be better received and enhance a presentation more than lots of them. A large volume of questions can affect the flow of a presentation as there can be a tendency to race through them
• Embrace the grey areasSometimes the more interesting results are the ones given to questions that do not necessarily have a correct answer or what may be a predictable outcome
Planning your questions:• Expect the unexpected
In preparation for your presentation, consider how you will respond to the audience’s opinions. There may be some shocks in the results so rehearse how you may respond to possible outcomes. Embrace this, as this has the potential to make your presentation more interesting
• Comment on the resultsAvoid any temptation to gloss over voting results with such phrases as “hmmm, interesting, next question please”. It is very important to comment on the results of the voting; the audience can get offended by a lack of feedback on their input
• Be flexibleIt often comes as a surprise to presenters to know that their questions do not have to be pre-scripted. Impromptu questions mean a question can be asked at any time. Simply give a vocal prompt stating which of the templates you would like to use and it will appear on-screen. Verbally pose the question to the audience then prompt to open the vote
• Be reactiveThis ad-lib facility enables you to immediately react to questions or comments raised by your audience or results of other questions
• A PowerPoint template with the branding for your meeting• The audience polling questions you would like to ask - either in a Word document or PowerPoint file• Any specifics on how you would like the question displayed. Examples:
• Countdown clock or open ended vote• Evaluation question, do not display the results to the audience• Comparison slide, compare data from question X with question Y• Ranking the top X options• Show results as percentages, actual numbers or both
• Correct answers of quiz questions• Content for the Connector screen
• Logos• Agendas and session information• Speaker biographies• Other information
