as a separate, independent nation. Of course, thenational Black community has an annual grossspendable income of more than 30 billion dollars.But most of this economic wealth is gained fromthe payrolls of white business and industry. Likeit or not, the Black community does not haveenough Black-owned businesses to employ all our

people at a salary level commensurate with today'scost of living or the quality of our preparation.

While economic independence may be manyyears away, there is one area where Blacks cangain a greater voice today. That is in the politicalarena. We must adopt Education, Economics, andPolitics as our power base.

When I say political power, I'm not merelytalking about electing a handful of Black candi-dates to various offices. No, I'm talking about theimportance of voter registration and placing yourvote where it can reap the greatest returns for theBlack community as a whole.

It matters not whether a political candidate isBlack or white, as long as he has empathy with theBlack community and its problems. We must stopusing our ballots to put people into office who areonly concerned with lining their own pockets withgold. We must learn to listen and evaluate thepromises of those who are seeking our support. Wehave arrived at a time when we must stand upand let the world know that politicians can no

longer count on our vote just because they promiseus a bushel basket of food and fifteen dollars.

Your vote is your power. Use it wisely, or weshall always be fighting the poverty, hunger, andblight that prevails in our community today.
