THE CAPTAIN DER HAUPTMANN
OH BOY
LONDON PREMIERE: in UK cinemas in September, courtesy of Signature Entertainment
Chancing upon an abandoned uniform, a Wehrmacht deserter poses as a Nazi captain in the final weeks of the war, and finds himself disturbingly well-suited to the job. Robert Schwentke’s bristling, Mephisto-like parable has harsh lessons for the rank and file.
Niko (played by award-winning Tom Schilling from the 2017 FACE TO FACE WITH GERMAN FILMS campaign) is a feckless college dropout, living off his father’s allowance, who mooches his way around Berlin one average day, dodging every commitment he can. This slacker’s odyssey, full of tart comic encounters, has a Jarmuschian hipster melancholy. You won’t want to miss the London premiere of the chilling black & white drama
THE CAPTAIN. After working with some of the biggest names in Hollywood on such films as FLIGHTPLAN, THE TIME TRAVELER‘S WIFE, R.E.D., R.I.P.D., DIVERGENT – INSURGENT and DIVERGENT – ALLEGIANT, director Robert Schwentke return-ed to his native language for THE CAPTAIN and casts a spotlight on some of the hottest German-speaking actors today, like Alexander Fehling, from the 2017 FACE TO FACE campaign.
“A wry, unforced comedy. Inescapably brings to mind vintage Woody Allen. Tom Schilling is exceptionally appealing.” (The Hollywood Reporter)
“A crowd-pleaser. Poignant and funny. A love-letter to the city of Berlin.” (Twitch Film)

UK PREMIERE: in UK cinemas from 16 November 2018, courtesy of Modern Films
At a Breton spa retreat in 1981, the Austrian art-house darling Romy Schneider gave her final interview. In a luminous monochrome portrait, writer-director Emily Atef uses these soul-baring sessions to test the poisoned chalice of celebrity.
A stand-up comedian called Astrid learns mid-pregnancy that her foe-tus has both Down’s syndrome and a heart defect. She must wrestle with whether or not to have a late-term abortion, in a tense, hot-button drama powered by anguished work from Julia Jentsch.
Afghan-German director Burhan Qurbani reconstructs the xenophobic violence that ripped through Rostock in 1992, when a 3,000-strong mob besieged and torched a high-rise full of Vietnamese immigrants. It’s a stark, LA HAINE-style docudrama speaking urgently to our moment.
FACE TO FACE WITH GERMAN TALENT: THE GERMAN FILM WEEKEND is proud to present the UK premiere of 3 DAYS IN QUIBERON (winner of seven Ger-man Film Awards) as our 2018 Festival Opening Night Gala.

In 2016, the national information and advisory centre for the promotion of German films worldwide – German Films Service + Marketing – launched a unique campaign to promote German cinematic achievements by showcasing exceptional German talent to the film industry and the wider international cinema-going community as a whole. The initiative – FACE TO FACE WITH GERMAN FILMS – shines a spotlight on the most influential indivi-duals currently working in the German film industry and represents just some of the many dynamic ‘faces’ of German filmmaking today.
The FACE TO FACE WITH GERMAN FILMS campaign launched at the 2016 London Film Festival, introducing six actresses as the initial industry ‘faces’, including European Film Award-winner JULIA JENTSCH. With the support of Germany’s most eclectic actors, the initiative entered its second phase dur-ing the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. Established acting talent, including former Berlinale European Shooting Star ALEXANDER FEHLING, and German Film Award-winner TOM SCHILLING, plus others who represent the next generation of acclaimed German acting talent, were presented to the global film indus-try as the next wave of Germany’s filmmaking ‘faces’. 2018 sees the conti-nuation of the campaign, celebrating the visionaries behind the camera, by highlighting prominent directors in the German film industry, including Cannes Critics Week Grand Prize-nominee EMILY ATEF and Berlin Golden Bear-nomi-nee BURHAN QURBANI, both of whom have already garnered a great deal of international recognition for their varied works.
For the first time, the Regent Street Cinema is partnering with German Films to bring you FACE TO FACE WITH GERMAN TALENT: THE GERMAN FILM WEEKEND from 21 - 23 September 2018.
The program of five German festival favourites (including two premieres) was curated by The Telegraph’s discerning film critic Tim Robey and will introduce you to some of the hottest talent from Germany, both in front of and behind the camera. Enjoy a weekend of exciting cinematic surprises – made in Germany!
