WOW! There were an amazing 33 entriesinto our Cantik Batik Youth Challengethis year! There was such a variety of

interpretations of the theme My Favourite Animal. It made choosing winners a difficulttask for Apprentice Judge Brandy LynnMaslowski. Thanks to Cantik Batiks for sponsoring thischallenge again this year. They are generouslyproviding prizes for the winners of the threecategories and the Viewers’ Choice. Each winner will receive a selection of assorted fabrics/precuts chosen by Shania Sunga. TheViewers’ Choice winner will receive either a9.1 metre bolt of fabric, or one metre of ninedifferent Cantik Batiks fabrics chosen fromtheir website: www.cantikbatiks.com. Thankyou, also, to Brandy Lynn Maslowski for judging these quilts and picking one winnerin each category. Our Cantik Batik Youth Challenge seems tobe getting bigger and better every year. Thisyear there were a whopping 21 entrants intothe youngest category, junior kindergarten tograde five, eight entrants in the middle schoolcategory, grade six to grade eight, and four entrants in the high school category, gradenine to grade twelve. Our youngest entrantwas just four years old. Alexa Kalist is a return entrant and alsowinner of the High School Category with herquilt Hoot You Looking At? Alexa enjoys quilting, following in her mother’s footsteps.She explains that her, “First quilt was a simplerag quilt that I made for my cousin a few yearsago when I wanted to learn to sew. I believethat started an addiction.” Her favourite partof quilt-making is, “The designing. I loved thechallenge of coming up with just the right design and colours of the quilt. I also loved

trying to incorporate thechallenge fabric into it in aunique way.” Brandy commented thatAlexa’s “quilt shows an excellent use of colourvalue (lights, mediums and darks) between thebody, the wings and the facial features of the owl.The challenge fabric on the wings blends in, butadds a fun element because viewers can lookfor the whales.”
