The BROADCASTER
January & February 2016
HERALD’S TRUMPET People make New Year’s resolutions at the beginning of the year. Did you make yours? Some will promise to make physical promises such as dieting, quitting smoking or giving up sweets. Others will promise to be more pleasant or some other change in one’s life. But what about our spiritual changes? Have we re-solved to do better in that area? How about doing more in Bible study or participating in more church activities? Elsewhere in the Broadcaster are articles that en-courage us to be more active in the church. Things such as a special study in Sunday School, Bible study being in a permanent location, and helping with the pot pie dinners. We can all offer to participate more in the life of the church. Please find somewhere to plug in and keep our spiritual promises.

some exercise at the same time.
The group meets in the church basement
on
the first and third Monday of each month

You can help earn a few dollars for the church by saving the tabs from your soda cans and other tabs from fruit and vegetable cans. In addition to the tabs, they are now collecting cans. There is a box for the tabs and a receptacle for the cans by the Food Pantry table in the narthex. All monies received from recycling will go to First Church’s General Fund.
FOOD PANTRY Emphasis For January and February remains the same as
in previous months : -
Cereal
Soup
Spaghetti Sauce
Peanut Butter
ANYTHING you wish to donate to the Food Pantry
is gratefully accepted.
Mission Chart
The Mission Chart in the Vestibule Still Has a Lot of Open Days If you would like to honor or remember a friend or loved one on the Mission Chart, it is $2.00 a day for each day you request. There are envelopes for your requests below the chart which is located in the vestibule. Fill out an envelope and put it in the offering plate or give it to Betsy Goenner or Weeze Chappell.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT WE
WHO ARE CALLED
METHODISTS BELIEVE?
Starting with the first Sunday in February, the adult
Sunday School class is going to look at this subject.
Pastor Ed is going to use “The United Methodist
Member’s Handbook” as a resource.
It has 40 subjects in 2-page recaps that gives us the
gist of what we believe.
COME AND JOIN US FOR THIS STUDY!

February 7, 2016 We don’t know yet who will play in the big game, but youEvery can be a player when it comes to hunger! Please help those in your area by donating to United Methodist Human Services SOUPer Bowl. The money collected will be used to supply the Franklin Street Food Pantry that serves people living in Downtown Johnstown, Prospect, Woodvale, Old Conemaugh Boro, East Conemaugh, Franklin, Roxbury, Eighth Ward, and Kernville.
HOMEMADE HAM POT PIE After a couple of months off, our Pot Pie Dinners are about to start again. We will begin with Ham Pot Pie on Thursday, January 21st. The time remains the same—4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The cost is $7.00 for quarts and $8.00 for dinners. We will need and are asking for your help with preparing the dinners. Even if it is only for a short time, we can use YOUR help. Don’t forget—we will also be needing your continued help in donations of desserts for the dinners. The Pot Pie day for February will be the 18th and we will let you know
later if it will be Ham or Chicken.
Pastor Ed and Pastor Terry have decided that when we come back for Bible Study in March, that we will be meeting permanently at First
Church. If you didn’t attend because you couldn’t remember where we were meeting, this will solve that prob-lem. We will be meeting in the Otterbein Room in the basement. We will start at 7:00 p.m. and try to end as close to 8:00 p.m. as possible.
PASTOR’S
DISCRETIONARY
FUND
The Christmas season has taken a toll on the Pastor’s
Discretionary Fund. We have helped a number of people
with appliances, travel assistance, overnight housing, and
other needs, leaving our Discretionary Fund low. We are
asking for some help in replenishing these funds. If you
want to contribute, please mark “Discretionary Fund” either
on your offering envelope or in a separate envelope.
WE APPRECIATE ANY DONATION.
First Church has an active prayer chain that allows
us to hear about and pray for people in need. If
you would like to be on the prayer chain, please
call the church office to let us know.
All you will need to do, when you receive a prayer
request, is pass it on to the next person on your
chain, and then pray for that need.

The Body of Christ gathered at First Church for
worship and celebration on Christmas Eve. About
91
people were in attendance.
The congregation participated in the Sacra-
ment of
Holy Communion.
Also included in the worship service was the
singing
of many favorite Christmas carols.
Special music was provided by Carol Speicher,
as is
our tradition, singing “Mary, Did You Know,” and
TO ALL WHO HELPED TO MAKE THE CHRISTMAS
HOLIDAY AT FIRST CHURCH SO SPECIAL
A “special thanks” to Joanne Kurtz, Chair of our NOW
Committee, for all of her efforts along with the
members of the NOW Committee.
Our appreciation to all the First Church Bakers for their
contributions for the Christmas Cookie trays. We made
$410 for First Church from the sales.
Special recognition to everyone who contributed to the
Mini Love Tree. Through their giving, we were able to
present United Methodist Human Services with a check
for $216.50.
Last, but certainly not least, thank you to Pastor Ed
