MEET GARY
2
After attending college, Gary is finally getting involved in his family’s business. He has his degree, knows the product, understands the customers, and is the perfect person to take over marketing. He’s developed his message. He knows what will get people’s attention. He’s developed the best promotion to attract business. Despite all of this, Gary has a major problem. He is not a graphic designer, and he doesn’t necessarily want the expense of hiring one. Having the right message and promotion is only good if you can communicate that message and promotion to the rest of the world.
THE TRAPGary falls into the entrepreneur/business owner trap. He goes to Google before he consults anybody else. It’s in our nature in this new age of technology at our fingertips, but it’s a dangerous place to be if you’re looking to boostrap an advertisement together.

THE PERFECT PICTUREYou find exactly what you’re looking for. It matches your promotion, communicates your message, and it is a professional photo. You right click, save-as, and throw it in your publishing software. No harm, no foul, right? WRONG!
4
BUSTEDSimply put, you’re busted. Using a photo that you didn’t take yourself requires a license of use. If you don’t have one, you’re risking far more than you’d imagine. And what if you go ahead and use the photo anyway? If someone catches you, they’re just going to ask you to take it down, right? WRONG!
5
TIME TO PAY UPListen. That’s the sound of thousands of your company’s dollars going into a legal fund to defend you from a lawsuit. If you’re a small operation, this could totally end your business. If you’re a big dog, it could cost you tens of thousands of dollars PER IMAGE.

COPYRIGHT PREDATORSBig Stock Companies like GETTY make a lot of their money by housing huge data centers full of workers whose only job is to scour the internet to find their images being illegally implemented on your website. Their offer to settle with you is almost blackmail-level diabolical, but you fell into their trap.
