Mock Magistrates competitors Trip to Bath Magistrates Courts
We were met by a serving Magistrate Mr Martyn Russell, who very kindly explained the court system to us and then arranged for myself and the students to witness some live cases scheduled for that day. Some of the students were also introduced to a team member from the probation service, who explained their role in the Criminal Justice System. Whilst other students were greeted by the Prosecution solicitor from the Crown Prosecution Service, who was also involved in a listed case for that day.
The students were exemplary throughout the day and were complimented for their behaviour and politeness both on the train and also by the court staff. I was extremely proud to have supported these students who were incredibly reflective upon their experiences and this visit has clearly encouraged them to consider careers associated with the legal system. It only remains to say that they were excellent ambassadors for The John of Gaunt School and we wish them every success in their Mock Magistrates Trial competition.

Year 11 Geographers braved the wind and rain at Studland sand dunes. They showed great resilience particularly on Wednesday when the heavens opened and rain of epic proportions fell on us. Thursday’s group had more luck weather wise. Despite these challenges they were able to practice their field work skills ready for the summer exams.
Well done Year 11.
Castle Mania! Over half term year 7 historians worked hard to produce models of medieval castles. The brief was to make a historically accurate castle showing key defensive features. On Wednesday 50 amazing castles were brought into school ranging from lego castles, wooden structures, paper mache motte and bailey castles and even some made from
cake! Tolly in 7D made a scale model of Scotney castle with light and sound effects, Kaitlin in 7G made a stone keep castle hat and Jack from 7D had a fully working drawbridge and portcullis.
The standard of work was incredible and all the castles can be seen on display in either Gloucester foyer or G24- do come and have a look.

Supporting Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance at JoG
As part of National Careers and Apprenticeship Week, students were able to hear from a variety of visiting speakers during their assembly slots. Year 11 found out about GoFish, a Trowbridge Town Team project promoting young entrepreneurs. Year 10 discovered how to research their career ideas using CareerPilot from Bath University careers advisers. Year 9 were introduced to a new Trowbridge Fire cadet scheme with Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service starting in September. Food Scientist, Dr Stuart Farrimond shared his wisdom with Year 8 and Year 7 gained an insight into the highs and lows of Vitoria Hillman’s career as a Wildlife Photographer and Biologist.
Other activities included raising awareness of how to apply and register for an
apprenticeship via a lunchtime drop in for Year 11 and Year 13 with Wiltshire
Colleges Apprenticeship Team.
Selected Year 10 girls were also invited to take part in a ‘Women in Engineering’ day at Chippenham Campus where they got to try some hands on activities with employers such as TH White, the MOD, MJ Church, The Society of Cosmetic Science, Apetito, Wessex Water to explore the huge array of opportunities within Engineering.
Two-year 12 students were also lucky enough to take part in a whole Digital
Technologies Apprenticeship day at the MOD in Corsham. Workshops included
looking into how virtual reality is used to create a more stimulating training
environment for the British Military as well as looking at the key issues in cyber
security and how they related to defence.
A lot to inspire our students to reach for rewarding and fulfilling careers –
whatever that might be!

Wednesday 27th February saw a group of thirteen students from year 8 and Year 9 attend Bath Magistrates Court for the day to witness the Criminal Justice System first hand. This was in order to prepare them for their forth coming participation in this year’s Mock Magistrates competition, which is due to take place in the next few weeks.
John of Gaunt Supporting Red Box Project with The Coventry Building Society
The Red Box Project quietly ensures that no young person misses school
because they have their period and was founded in March 2017, supporting
young women who are missing out on their education because they can not
afford the products they need during this time.
As part of celebrating International Women’s Day John of Gaunt are joining up
with The Coventry Building Society to support The Red Box Project.
If any parents would like to make a donation of sanitary products these can be
dropped off at The Coventry Building Society, Market Street, Trowbridge or at
main school reception.
Working together we can tackle period poverty and ensure no young person
misses out on their education and life long aspirations.
Non-School Uniform Day for Comic Relief
On 15th March the school will be having a non-school
uniform day to raise money for Comic Relief. Where possible we'd like students to wear something red to reflect the red nose theme.
Each student is to make a contribution of £1 and ideally paid through ParentPay, otherwise £1 can be handed to tutors during registration.
World Book Day Fun! Thursday turned the library into a crime scene and all students into detectives for the World Book Day Murder Mysteries.
Students could choose to solve one or both murders that had been committed, one using codes and one using reading skills. The
atmosphere was fantastic! The discussions about the suspects and the students’ theories were very clever. The names of the murderers are now displayed in the library and all successful detectives can collect a prize from the library.
Thank you to all staff who got into the spirit of the day and dressed up!
Bake Sale
Let me start with a great big THANK YOU to all the
students, parents and staff who baked some amazing cakes! So far we have made just over £100! New bean bags will be winging their way to the library soon! A special thank you to all lovely Y8 and Y9 students who ran the bake sale for me. I couldn’t have done it without you!
Keep sharing stories together!

Activity Days come to JOG
This year you will be pleased to know we are planning activity days for years
7-10 in July. We have a menu of exciting opportunities both in and out of school.
More information will follow shortly.
Dear all,
During this week I had the pleasure of visiting over 100 lessons, many of these were with a variety of visitors. The feedback from our visitors has been fantastic, one lady yesterday emailed to say, ‘I am so incredibly impressed with the atmosphere in your school’! Students have worked really hard in lessons this week, with a noticeable increase in both the quality and quantity of work being produced, it’s no wonder students are earning so many reward points!
Amongst all the other aspects taking place this week, this afternoon was a very special time because we were able to present Kale Turner’s family with money and gifts that the staff, teachers and some parents have been raising over the last couple of months. Kale is a student at our school who has recently suffered with a brain tumour, as a result he has lost all of his movement, and now only communicates by facial expressions, however, he is very much part of our school and community. In total we raised £875.
As always, I hope you all have a lovely relaxing weekend.
