Principal’s Message 

Welcome  to Week 10.  I hope  the Easter weekend provided your  family some rest and 

relaxation. You may have seen in the media over the previous Christmas holiday period 

that  there  were  a  number  of  metropolitan  schools  whose  gates  were  opened  and 

playing fields were made accessible to the public for use by families as part of an active 

and safe play space trial. The aim was  to ensure that  families have safe places to take 

their children during the holidays where they can get active. Kicking a footy, playing tips, 

running around etc. This  trial has been extended  for  the April school holidays and  I’m 

pleased  to share with you  that our school has been selected  to be part of  the second 

trial. This will mean  that  if you wish  to come  to  school  to use our  fields or basketball 

court  to help get the children active  these holidays you can. Access to classrooms and 

buildings will be restricted for obvious reasons, but you will have our school grounds as 

an alternative these holidays for play. We are currently going through a planning process 

with Schools  Infrastructure to prepare for the trial, after this  is complete  I should have 

more details to share with you. Stay tuned. 

 

I was  informed  this morning  that one of our dedicated grandmas, Karen Nesbitt, had 

entered an online Facebook competition run by an organisation called  ‘All 4 One, All 4 

Love’  that  aims  to  support  children  undergoing  treatment  for  leukeamia  and  similar 

disorders,  that  result  in  severe  immune  deficiency,  organ  transplant  or  isolation.  The 

prize was  to win $100 worth of hand‐sanitiser  for your child’s school and Karen  found 

out over  the weekend  that she had won  for Cardiff South PS. This means  that we will 

have some extra hand‐sanitiser to place in classrooms as we enter the winter flu season. 

What a nice surprise, thanks Karen, what a great outcome for our students! Thanks also 

to ‘All 4 One, All 4 Love’ for running this competition and selecting us! 

 

Following  another  incident  last week,  I  feel  it  is  appropriate  that  I  remind  all  school 

families  about  the  Department’s  expectations  of  behaviour  when  you  come  onto  a 

public  school  site. All people on our  site,  students,  teachers, parents  and  visitors  are 

entitled to be treated with respect and dignity and should have confidence that they can 

be safe when at school. It is completely unacceptable to initimidate, harrass or threaten 

another  person.  Within  this,  there  is  an  expectation  that  no  parent  will  approach 

another child that is not their own (or the other child’s parent) and attempt to address 

that child’s behaviour. If you are concerned about another child’s behaviour  in relation 

to your own child, you should speak with the class teacher or Assistant Principal for that 

stage, so that they can investigate your concerns and decide upon the most appropriate 

course of action.

The penalties  for coming onto school grounds and acting outside of  these expectations are severe.  If anyone 

acts  in breach of  these expectations, under  the  Inclosed Lands Protection Act 1901 you can be  refused entry 

onto  school grounds  for  lengthy periods of  time.  It means you cannot be on our  site  for assemblies, events, 

volunteering or anything else including dropping off and picking children up at bell times. So please remember 

this, it is a privilege and not a right that you are permitted onto our site and that privilege comes with a number 

of expectations about how to behave towards others. Thank you to the many families who are always respectful 

of others on our site and who don’t need this reminder.

Cross Country 

The  re‐scheduled  school  cross  country  carnival  is  on  this  Thursday  5th  April 

commencing at 11am. Any families wishing to spectate may  join us  in the K‐2 playground at 11am. All visitors 

will be asked to sign a visitor register which will be brought around by our student leaders. It may be advisable 

to bring a chair to sit on and insect repellent to make your spectating experience more enjoyable!

Aboriginal PLP meetings 

All of our Aboriginal  families  should have  received an  invitation  last week  to  join us on Tuesday 10th April at 

Yamuloong Conference Centre for dinner and the opportunity to collaborate with the class teachers  in writing 

your  child’s  2018  PLP  goals.  To  assist  us  with  catering,  please  RSVP  by  Wednesday  4th  April  so  that  the 

Yamuloong team can ensure there is sufficient food for those attending.  

 

P&C Monthly Meeting Update ‐ March Every month the P&C meet, to discuss all things relating to the school and the benefits for our children. Here’s a summary of key points from last week’s meeting:  

Business that arose from previous meeting included new hours for the uniform shop , information about the Treasurer’s Role (which still needs to be filled permanently), results from the P&C Survey (these will follow in a future newsletter) and options about the possibility for EFTPOS in the uniform shop.  

In regards to trialling an EFTPOS option for the uniform shop – we are looking at the possibility of doing this towards the end of the year (end of Term 3, and Term 4). This would be a TRIAL PERIOD ONLY. The only way to have a machine comes at a rather large cost for a year, as this is charged at a monthly rate, meaning we would still be charged for months when the school is closed and we aren’t even using it. Costs would need to be covered for this to be viable as otherwise the uniform shop would be losing money. There would have to be a 2% surcharge for this.  

The Fundraising committee had discussed some options for activities through the year – possibilities including a movie night, colour run, the usual raffles.  

Principal’s report and Treasurer’s report – these are attached to the minutes, kept in the office.  

Our next meeting will actually be held on Wednesday 16th May, 7pm, in the library. Everyone is more than welcome – you don’t need to be a member to attend meetings, if you are just wanting to hear what goes on, find out some information, raise a question, or just listen – open to everyone. Also, if you are worried about not being able to commit to every meeting and feel you can’t come due to that – again, more than welcome, even if you only come once or twice a year. Come along and help us help our kids and help our school.  

 

Combined School Anzac Service 

Next Tuesday, the school captains and house captains have been invited to join Mr Holland in representing our 

school at  the Newcastle Combined Schools Anzac Service at  the Civic Theatre. The  students are  reminded  to 

return  their permission notes and money  this week. On  the day, please  come dressed  in  full  school uniform 

including black shoes.  

 

Out of Uniform Fundraiser  This year, a group of students from our school have again been selected to perform in StarStruck. They will be representing our school at  the Newcastle Entertainment Centre  in  June  for a number of performances  in  the Hunter  Schools  Concert‐  ‘Connect’.  Over  the  years,  there  has  been  an  increase  in  costs  for  students  to participate and to support our StarStruck families with costs, we would  like to have an Out of Uniform Day at school. The StarStruck students have selected the theme to be ‘Rubik’s Cube’ day! Each student is to come to school in 1 block colour from the Rubik cube (red, white, yellow, blue, orange, green). We plan to get some clever photos of the students throughout the day. 

 To support our families with this special event, please bring a gold coin donation to school with your child on ‘Friday the 13th of April’.  We thankyou in advance for your support.

Coles Sports for Schools Update  As  you may  be  aware,  the  Coles  Sports  for  Schools  promotion  has  concluded  and 

vouchers are no longer being distributed at supermarkets. Now the big job of counting 

and  submitting  our  school’s  vouchers will  commence.  If  you  have  any  vouchers  at 

home that you have been collecting bring them into school and place in the box at the 

office as soon as possible. Currently we have collected almost 30,000 vouchers during 

the promotion. The more  vouchers we  send away  the more  sporting equipment we 

have the opportunity to gain for our school. Thanks for your support. 

Uniform Shop 

Just a reminder that our school uniform shop is now open twice a week – Wednesday mornings from 8:40am to 

9.30am and Thursday afternoons from 2:50pm to 3.20pm. 

 

Stage 2 Video Conference 

The Stage 2 Video Conference is fast approaching. The last day to secure a spot is Monday 9th April (Week 11) with  the  Video  Conferences  held  on  Wednesday  11th  April.  Contact  the  front  office  to  complete  the accompanying permission note and make payment.

When kids’ heroes fall

 

The recent ball tampering scandal involving the Australian cricket team has been front and centre in the media in recent days. The condemnation of the actions of Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft, the main protagonists in this ongoing drama has been swift, vigorous and harsh. 

While much has been written about the toxic culture of the Australian team itself, it’s the sudden fall from grace by sporting heroes that’s perhaps hardest to comprehend. In particular, deposed captain Steve Smith has gone from hero to villain, icon to demon, idol to devil in the matter of a few days. In a country that routinely holds up sporting heroes as figures for the next generation to aspire to there’s now a need to help young people makes sense of what’s going on. 

These events provide rich fodder for family conversations about many issues that are very pertinent to children and young people. Here are some possible starting points: 

When heroes reveal their feet of clay Fair play is something that is drummed into kids from an early age so when your hero freely admits to breaking the rules to get an advantage it’s hard to feel anything else but shock and disappointment. These are legitimate emotions yet they don’t justify further vilification that is seems to be occurring in the media at the moment. Conversations that focus on the pressure that these young men can experience; a win at all costs attitude that can lead to such actions and the impact that group pressure can have on individuals. 

 

When good people make bad decisions Much of the current commentary is polarising and unforgiving. Smith, Warner and Bancroft have been roundly pilloried for their actions. They’ve been labelled many things including ‘cheats’, ‘idiots’ and ‘arrogant’. The language used has been black not white, rarely have there been any shades of grey used. It’s easy to forget that these are young men who under intense pressure made poor choices. Good people make bad decisions every day that don’t make front page news.  Doing the right things can be hard sometimes. Label the deed, not the dude. These are important messages to impress upon children and young people. 

There’s no shame in losing We all love a winner. No one wants to be a loser. In fact, being labelled a loser is perhaps the biggest ignominy of all for a young person these days. When did losing become shameful?  There is a tremendous need to impress upon kids that there is no shame in losing and that a win at all costs attitude generally has its own price. 

Cheats, fair play and bending the rules It’s been noted that Cricket Australia’s CEO James Sutherland has avoided using the word cheat at all costs while fronting the media on South Africa. Most likely he avoids the word for legal reasons but it’s also evident that it’s a value‐laden, emotive word. Labelling someone a cheat is perhaps one of the biggest slurs of all. Yet, we condone bending rules; going close to the line of fair play and getting a mental edge over an opponent. This is great time for family conversations about fair play, spirit of sport and bending rules which can be commonplace in everything from backyard cricket to a simple game of cards.  

There by the grace of God go I We live in a society that’s quick to judge others. Reality TV relies on viewers passing judgement on contestants, in voyeuristic ways. We risk raising a generation with an empathy deficit that is quick to judge other’s harshly and slow to forgive. At present a little empathy wouldn’t go astray. A comment such as “I wonder how these guys are feeling right now?” can help kids see things from other perspectives. It’s easy to be judgemental, hard to be empathetic; harder still to be forgiving and allow them to come back into the fold. It’s also useful to discuss the fact that we are all be capable of acting outside our values and beliefs at times. Yep, we’re all human. 

The ball tampering incident is highly emotive as it’s hit at the core of many values that we hold sacred. But it’s also useful to remember that front and centre are young men who are fallible like the rest of us, and while they deserve to experience the consequences of their choices, they don’t deserve to be personally vilified for doing something that we encourage them to do that is, to win. It’s sport, not war. Kids need to understand that too!
