Habitat relies heavily on volunteers to achieve our mission and build our homebuyer’s houses. We are very fortunate and grateful for our committed regular volunteers that dedicate several days each week to Habitat.
As part of our mission, we strive to unite people through their volunteer experience, changing lives and improving our community. To continue our work, we need more Crew Leaders – people who want to learn a skill and teach it to others!
We are actively working to identify, recruit and train more Crew Leaders.
Kevin Scarborough and Garrett Dean arethe first of the new Crew Leaders that areflying solo! Kevin has been around Habitatfor many years. He has been a HouseLeader in the past as well as a BoardMember. Garrett has recently finished histime in the Armed Forces and is spendingsome down time with Habitat. They arecurrently leading volunteers on the CPA sponsored house.
Other Crew Leaders assisting in leading community groups include long-time volunteers Will Baumann, Regan Repasky and Bob Sanders.
We need more Crew Leaders! If you or someone you know might be interested in a fulfilling volunteer opportunity, refer them to Allie Raque at [email protected] or 502.805.1665.
Over the last three years, Habitat has made a significant investment in the Hazelwood neighborhood. In May, Chuck’s Team and KentuckyOne Health partnered with Bahati and her four sons to build their new home on LaSalle Avenue. When this home dedicates it will be the 150th house led by Chuck’s team and the 11th Habitat home in this area. It also means 33 children have a stable, safe environment to grow and thrive in the Hazelwood neighborhood.
Our partnership with the neighborhood includes working with the area churches to help make connections for our homebuyers. The Temple of Faith Baptist Church is one of these neighborhood partners helping us build relationships in the area (and provide parking for volunteers!). Rev. Joel A. Bowman, Sr., founder and senior pastor, wrote this poem in honor of the ministry of Habitat for Humanity.
Calling All Volunteers
Tender Hearts & Loving Homes©
The Savior had no place to lay. Born in a stable filled with hay.
From birth He was a refugee,Who came to set the prisoner free.
He had no place to lay His head, But fed the multitudes some bread.
Two sisters gave Him space to rest. One sister gave her very best.
She gave Him both her heart and home. Her mission was to make Him known.
The love she had was clearly seen.
She bowed to Him, and crowned Him King.
May we, together, do the same;Provide a home in His great name.
Today, there is a weighty need, To house the poor; our selfless deed.
But we are prone to selfishness, May God make us compassionate.
I’ll bring some hammers, you bring the nails. Let’s build some homes, instead of jails.
I’ll love my neighbor as myself, And serve the ones who need my help.
We’re all equal in God’s sight. Let’s work for peace, and lessen strife.
Then we will please the Lord above, And fill each home we build with love.

It was so quick and easy! I typed in the VIN number and ALL the car information popped up automatically! Wow, I was impressed. It took 5 minutes and all I had to do was go out and get the exact mileage and it was finished. I didn’t dream it would be so easy. Thanks for your help.

“Neighbors Helping NeighborsLast year, Habitat added community development and home repair to its mission and began hosting “Love Your Neighborhood” projects- intensive one-day events that resemble a festival with a purpose. This work supports homeowners in disadvantaged neighborhoods, strengthening and uplifting the dynamic between individual pride, community engagement and neighborhood livability by creating a safer and healthier environment.
So far this year, we have completed two “Love Your Neighborhood” projects in the Portland and California neighborhoods. The events serve as a reminder of the much-needed positive impact we are having on some of our city’s most underserved communities. Reminding neighbors that the homes and people in the Portland and California neighborhoods have great potential. Reminding us all that ‘You don’t have to live next door to me to be my neighbor.”
“Love Your Neighborhood” - PortlandOn May 20, Habitat kicked off its first “Love Your Neighborhood” event of 2017. Over 200 community volunteers and residents completed exterior home repairs and beautification projects in the Portland neighborhood.
After the check-in and cups of coffee provided by Heine Brothers, volunteers quickly spread out to cover the boundary area from Lytle St. to Duncan St. between 18th and 21st streets. Volunteers teamed with residents to complete 7 critical exterior renovations and clean up debris from five alleyways throughout the area. Thrivent Financial, Republic Bank, The Community Foundation of Louisville, Highland Presbyterian Church and The River Road Mosque provided funding for the work.
Volunteers worked on rejuvenating Boone Square Park while artists from Building Blocks and volunteers worked with youth to paint flower pots and crosswalks near the park. Louisville Grows assisted area residents and volunteers in restoring the community garden raised beds. The day finished with a community lunch sponsored by LDG Development and The Table.
“Love Your Nieghborhood” - CaliforniaWhile the temperature was less than inviting, we had a great day on July 21 for our second “Love Your Neighborhood” project in the California neighborhood sponsored by Thrivent Financial, Brown-Forman, Passport and UPS. More than 130 people came out to repair three owner-occupied homes, clean the alleyways, spread more than 10 tons of mulch and revitalize a community garden at the California Community Center. Over 50 flower pots were painted that the community center youth group then filled with flowers to spread beauty throughout the area.
WHAS11 News highlighted the partnership of the residents and volunteers working together to strengthen the community. With the triple digit heat index, we wrapped up all the projects at noon and headed to the community center for a lunch celebration with our volunteers and area residents.
Come out and join us for “Love Your Neighborhood” - Russell on Saturday, September 23! For volunteer information, contact Allie Raque at [email protected] or 502.805.1665.
