A Ruggedized Source Connector for Larger Gun Volumes
AG Geophysical responded to field feedback concerning the surv iva l of source connectors on larger than usual acoustic sources. The AG team found that connectors were continually being used for acoustic sources well beyond their design capacity, resulting in premature failure.
Due to the inc reased industry usage of larger acous t ic sources , AG Geophysical has developed a r u g g e d i ze d s o u r c e connector designed for increased survivabi l i ty.
Dimensions and internal reinforcements mitigate fatigue while minimizing damage during deployment and retrieval. Field tests using very large acoustic sou rce vo lume s have resulted in over 350,000 cycles without electrical failure.
FacilitiesThe Teledyne Marine Seismic group operates two facilities located in the greater Houston, TX region, and a European support facility, all with advanced machining, manufacturing and testing capabilities. An experienced and well-trained workforce delivers integrated, highly reliable product solutions, all from a single, established source to ensure a secure supply chain.
• Purpose-built streamer assembly and repair facilities
• Pressure vessels for hydrostatic testing
• Acoustic test facilities
• In-house machining and tooling
• Over 65,000 square feet of manufacturing and support area
• 24-hour field support

TECHNOLOGIES
Case StudieseSource™: Environmentally-Conscious Exploration
Expanding environmental regulations the world over are requiring tighter control of the acoustic source signal bandwidth. As we learn more about marine mammal hearing sensitivities, there is a greater need for an environmentally conscious acoustic energy source for marine seismic exploration. As a result, Teledyne Bolt developed a bandwidth-controlled seismic source that minimizes the sound frequencies in the range identif ied as harmful to by marine life. The design required greater than usual attention to engineering
detail due to an increase in mechanical control and sophistication.
The main challenge was to engineer and qualify a higher stress design to be as reliable as ever. The resulting product, eSource, is a tool that tailors output by limiting high frequency emissions to better meet regulation. This mitigation of high frequency energy comes with no compromise to the low f requency in fo rmat ion c ruc ia l to s e i s m i c e x p l o r a t i o n . T h e b e n e f i t o f t h i s environmentally conscious
source is the ability to negotiate more easily with environmental organizations during the permit stages of a seismic survey. This leads to a potential decrease of mandatory alternative mitigation techniques and infrastructure for marine life safety.
