Objective:

TSW discover how to find the surface area of prisms

Surface Area of Prisms

What is surface area? Surface area is literally the

area of all of the surfaces of a three dimensional object.

When you wrap a present, the amount of wrapping paper you use is the surface area of the present.

When you paint the walls in your house, the area you cover with paint is the surface area of the wall.

One way to find surface area… Since surface area is finding the

area of each surface, that is what we are going to do!Area of surface 1:

A = 5 x 2 = 10 ft2

Area of surface 2:A = 5 x 2 = 10 ft2

Area of surface 3:A = 4 x 2 = 8 ft2

Area of surface 4:A = 4 x 2 = 8 ft2

Area of surface 5:A = 5 x 4 = 20 ft2

Area of surface 6:A = 5 x 4 = 20 ft2

Now just add all of the areas together to get the TOTAL surface area.

Total Surface Area = 76 ft2

Triangular Prism Let’s do the same process

but with a triangular prism.Area of surface 1:

A = (3 x 4) ÷ 2 = 6 ft2

Area of surface 2:A = (3 x 4) ÷ 2 = 6 ft2

Area of surface 3:A = 10 x 5 = 50 ft2

Area of surface 4:A = 10 x 4 = 40ft2

Area of surface 5:A = 10 x 3 = 30ft2
