Legs Project:
The aim of this project was to design, model, rig and animate a pair of legs navigating around at least three obstacles.
First Ideas: I decided to do a burlesque dancer, as I thought her walk would be really interesting to explore.
I used some of my own lifedrawing, and reference photos from the internet to help me achieve the shape I wanted.
An early storyboard. It was around this time that I realised my idea
wasn’t really feasible – she would have nothing to avoid. Originally, I thought she could weave between
boxes of props, but I thought it would look forced, and I wanted
something more dynamic.
Unfortunately the model was already built, so I had to do
something that would fit. I decided upon a woodland ranger – this
would give her plenty of opportunities for movement.
I decided to go with a fallen log, so she had something to step over, tree stumps to weave
between, a branch to duck under, and some rocky ‘steps’ to climb up. This would bring an
interesting variety of textures, colours and shapes to the scene, and also give the
opportunity to show off her range of motion.
Textured legs: I knew I wanted brown boots from
when I chose the character, but I wasn’t sure what colour to make her leggings. Black
was too dark, brown and green would be so present in the environment it would be hard to pick her out, and blue
seemed too bright. I tried some colours, and decided on
a blue/green mixture. It fits with the surroundings, but is
different enough to be noticed among the foliage.
