Tagalog and Filipino
In 1937, Tagalog was selected as the basis of the national languageof the Philippines by the National Language Institute. In 1939,Manuel L. Quezon named the national language WikangPambans(National Language).
Tagalog is a Central Philippine language within the Austronesianlanguage family. Being Malayo-Polynesian, it is related to otherAustronesian languages such as Malagasy, Javanese, Indonesian,Malay, Tetum (of East Timor), and Tao language (of Taiwan). It isclosely related to the languages spoken in the Bicol and Visayasregions such as Bikol and the Visayan group including Hiligaynonand Cebuano.
Languages that have made significant contributions to Tagalogvocabulary are especially Spanish and English.
