THE LORD’S PRAYER
The pattern of the prayer is that, before asking for “bread,” we:
• Adore our heavenly Father
“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name”
• Pray for His kingdom “Your kingdom come, your will
be done, on earth as it is in heaven”

THE LORD’S PRAYER
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.” (Matt 11:19)

THE LORD’S PRAYER
“‘This our son is stubborn and rebellious; he will not
obey our voice; he is a glutton and a
drunkard.’ Then all the men of the city shall stone him to death with stones.”
Jesus’ feasting was viewed as disloyal to the Jewish traditions, deserving death.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
6 On this mountain the LORD of hosts
will make for all peoplesa feast of rich food,
a feast of well-aged wine,of rich food full of
marrow, of aged wine well refined.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
7 And he will swallow up on this mountain
the covering that is cast over all peoples,
the veil that is spread over all nations.

7 And he will swallow up on this mountain

THE LORD’S PRAYER
8 He will swallow up death forever;
and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all
faces,and the reproach of his
people he will take away from all
the earth, for the LORD has spoken.

Jesus’ feasting, therefore, is a SIGN that God’s kingdom is “at hand.”
“Your kingdom come . . . on earth as it is in heaven”
Jesus’ feasting proclaims that the Father is at last acting to rescue his people and to wipe away their tears.

Why then was Jesus criticized so harshly by the religious leaders of his time for feasting?

Why then was Jesus criticized so harshly by the religious leaders of his time for feasting?
THE LORD’S PRAYER
First, he was feasting with all the wrong people.
(The kingdom culture Jesus proclaimed didn’t include only the kinds of people the religious leaders expected or wanted.)

Second, he was feasting at the wrong time.
(The Jewish leaders’ mindset was focused on remembering tragic events such as their ongoing Exile, which demanded fasting, not feasting.)

THE LORD’S PRAYER
1. Our natural longings and desires for “bread” (and all the human needs it symbolizes) are not “evil” or “wrong.”
“Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no
secrets are hid . . .” (Book of Common Prayer)

THE LORD’S PRAYER
“Satisfy our desires for love, for marriage, for children, for success, for comfort, for fulfillment, for peace, for , in your way and in your time.”
“God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied
in Him.”

2. It is right to pray honestly for our specific needs, not just general requests.
We pray to “our Father.”
Our prayers should not only be for “spiritual” things.

3. We must always be aware of those who don’t have daily bread.
“Our daily bread” implies we pray as part of a family, both the family of Christ and the human family.
We are a “kingdom of priests,” interceding before the Father on behalf of others.

4. The Eucharist is both the highest form of prayer and the answer to our prayer.
In receiving this symbolic feast we say “thank you.”
In receiving this symbolic feast, our deepest needs are touched as we taste the goodness of God’s kingdom.

Today, when you come receive the Communion feast, will you bring someone with you in your mind and heart? Someone who can’t or won’t come to the Table?

Questions:1. What are some other
actions of Jesus that were SIGNS of God’s kingdom? How can/do our actions signify God’s kingdom?
2. What are some benefits and challenges of praying for God to fulfill our deepest desires (and specific needs), in “his way and in his time?”
