JUNE
Pentecost June 4
The Birthday of the Church
Pentecost Sunday celebrates the day that the Holy Spirit descended upon
the disciples, 50 days after Easter according to Luke or Easter night according
to John. This is the day a small group of frightened disciples were transformed
into leaders who would carry the gospel out into the world.
We will mark this feast day in a variety of ways:
• Wear red, the symbolic color of the Holy Spirit to church.
• Help us collect 200 boxes of cake mix or cans of frosting for the Akron
Domestic Violence Shelter. (Yes, this is a #whatsyour200!)
The goal is 200 boxes or cans on June 4.
• We will hear the gospel reading in “many tongues” as the story in Acts tells
us that on Pentecost everyone in the crowd heard the gospel proclaimed in
their own native language. This will be at the 10:00 service.
• We will renew our baptismal covenant. Pentecost is one of the great
baptismal feast days, along with Easter, All Saints, and the Baptism of Jesus.
Since we have no baptisms scheduled for Pentecost, we will renew the
covenant we made or made for us when we were baptized.
Join us for this special Pentecost celebration!

June is Men’s Health Month
The purpose of Men’s Health Month is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. There is a ”Silent Health Crisis,” according to Dr. David Gremilion. ”It’s the fact that, on average, American men live sicker and die younger than American women.”
Compared to women, men are more likely to:
•Smoke and drink
•Make unhealthy or risky choices
•Put off regular checkups and medical care
There are also health conditions that only affect men, such as prostate cancer and low testosterone. Many of the major health risks that men face - like colon cancer or heart disease - can be prevented and treated with early diagnosis.
Take Charge of Your Health:
•See a doctor for regular checkups, even if you feel fine
•Stay up to date on important shots (like flu, tetanus, pneumonia and shingles)
•Watch out for signs of health problems like diabetes or depression
•Eat healthy and be active
Get screening tests to find problems early:
•Get your blood pressure checked at least once every 2 years.
•Talk to your doctor about getting your cholesterol checked.
•If you are age 50 to 74, get tested regularly for colorectal cancer.
•If you are a man age 65 to 75 and have ever smoked, talk with your doctor about your risk for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).
•If you feel stressed, anxious, or sad, ask your doctor to screen you for depression
•Ask your doctor about taking aspirin every day. If you are age 50 to 59, taking aspirin every day can lower your risk of heart attack and colorectal cancer.

Dear Friends,
As much as I love the program year, with
Sunday morning Christian Education, the
choir at the 10:30 service, and our buildings
bursting with activity during the week, I do
look forward to the more leisurely pace of
summer. Summer seems to give us more time
to connect with each other and enjoy each
other’s company. Summer also gives us more
time for travel and other leisure activities.
Summer is also the time when families tend
to move and look for a new church. While
summer tends to be a “down time” in church
life, summer is a vitally important time for
the welcoming of people and families new to
Hudson and Christ Church. If a family comes
to visit and sees no children, that sends a
(false!) message about Christ Church. If
someone comes to visit and is met by a whole
host of empty pews, that also sends a (false!)
message about us. The most basic way to help
grow Christ Church is to simply be present
when you are in town on Sunday and welcome
anyone you have not met before. How easy is
that?
As a side note, please check the ministry
schedules and find a sub if you have a conflict
with your scheduled Sunday. If you make a
change, please let the office know. Having
the correct names in the bulletin both helps us
know we have everything covered and helps
new people learn names by associating the
names in the bulletin with the people serving.
Enjoy the summer!
Blessings,
Charlotte

Children’s Chapel Underway for the Summer!
We started Children’s Chapel on May 14 with a good group of kids!
This summer, we are using the Godly Play curriculum, which uses
Montessori-based learning experiences to help children explore their
faith through story, to gain religious language and to enhance their
spiritual experience through wonder and play. Children have an innate sense of the presence of God
and this program embraces and encourages that sense. We will be exploring the parables of Jesus as
well as encountering some of the big characters of the Old Testament, such as Sarah, Moses, and
Samuel. Children ages 3-3rd Grade will begin each Sunday in the service with their parents. During
the Hymn of Praise, they will join Sarah Bhatia or a volunteer at the front of the sanctuary and proceed
to Parish Hall. Children return to their families during The Peace. This program offers a great oppor-
tunity for your children to grow in their understanding of faith and experience God in new ways.
Come join us!

Kathy Garber at [email protected].
to
Dr. Charlie Carr
For the past 5 years, Charlie Carr has graced Christ Church
with his exceptional skills on the organ
and his fine choral direction abilities. He has been
a valued member of the Christ Church staff with
a quick wit and wicked sense of humor.
Charlie’s last Sunday at Christ Church is Sunday, June 18.
There will be a reception to honor and thank Charlie
after the 10 o’clock service that day.
Please join us to wish Charlie well in his retirement and
to thank him for his many gifts to Christ Church.

Education for Ministry Graduation
Congratulations to our EFM graduates, who have completed this four year program of theological education, which meets every
Monday night from September through June. Our graduates this year are:
Janet Greer, Ruth Anne Belton,
Midge Karam, and Pam Zuhl.
Thank you to…
• The Confirmation Sponsors,
for the wonderful reception for
our confirmands.
• Courtney Bixby, for all of her
hard work to ensure a Christ
Church presence in the
Memorial Day parade.
• Everyone who helped with Gar-
den Clean Up day at the end of
April.
Thank you to all who donated pet
food for Evelyn Cicen and her
Brownie troop’s service project.
We collected 220 cans of dog and
cat food for Pawsabilities and the
Humane Society of Summit County!
We did it! We have reached our goal of collecting 200
empty prescription bottles to send to Belize and other
third world countries where prescriptions are typically
handed out in folded paper containers. At the time of
this publication, we are at 230 bottles. We will continue
to collect containers throughout the year. Thank you!
Holy Currencies coming to Christ Church
Excerpts from the website of the Kaleidoscope Institute, www.kscopeinstitute.org : “Holy Currencies is a holistic model for stewardship and congregational vitality, moving beyond “time, talent,
and treasure” to create missional and sustainable ministries. This model, with its processes, enables church
leaders to understand, develop, and utilize five other kinds of currencies besides money that are essential for
creating sustainable and missional ministries. These currencies are: Time & Place, Gracious Leadership,
Relationship, Truth, and Wellness. These currencies flow and recirculate to form a Cycle of Blessings
which empower congregations to strengthen their internal relationships as well as reach out and connect
with the diverse populations in their neighborhoods.
The Christ Church Holy Currencies team currently includes Reed Stith, Roxanne Grattan, Peter Eells, Irene
Gillette, Jim Lang, Pam Zuhl, and the Rev. Charlotte Reed. We met for 6 Wednesdays over a 2 month period
to learn about Holy Currencies, participating in live workshops broadcast online to us and a number of
parishes from several states as well as Canada.
Now we are in the process of mapping out a specific plan of activities and tasks that we feel are appropriate
for Christ Church. We have a large list of possible tools, materials and events from which to choose. The goal
of Holy Currencies is to assist the parish in better connecting with the wider community, and to help ensure
the sustainability of new and current ministries by employing the whole cycle of currencies. If you are interest-
ed in being part of our Holy Currencies team, please contact Reed Stith at [email protected].
Congratulations to those
who were confirmed and
received into the Episcopal
Church on May 14th by
Bishop Arthur Williams!

May Vestry Meeting Highlights
Dear Christ Church Episcopal,
OPEN M and I would like to thank you for the support you
gave, and helping to share in God’s work. To quote Malcom
Bane, “If you wait until you can do everything for everybody,
instead of something for somebody, you’ll end up not doing
nothing for nobody.” Thank you for caring and being a doer
of good works. The smallest of donations are appreciated
and can impact many families’ lives.
The generous gift you gave to OPEN M for the month of April
was a nutritional meal service. This service was received
and served with gratitude for your generosity. Our clients
express their appreciation for the gifts you give daily.
OPEN M encourages you to share our mission with individu-
als you may come across. Thank you for supporting us and
our Vision of “breaking the cycle of poverty and improving
the health of our community, one family at a time.”
Sincerely,
Julie Carneal
