On20MaythecityofPalmyrawasseizedbyISIScausingmanyfamiliestofleetotheAlQuaryitenareasoutheastofHoms.On22MayISISclosedallexitspreventingtheinhabitantsfromleav-ingthecity.UNHCRrespondedwithCRIsfor7,000individuals,inadditiontoholdingCRIsforafurther500peopleinawarehousethereascontingencystock.On27May,anotherurgentdeliveryofCRIfamilykitswassenttoAlQuaryitentoserve7,500 indi-vidualsdisplacedfromPalmyracity.
Inaddition,UNHCRincooperationwithits implementingpart-nerSARChaspreparedacontingencyplanforthepotentialin-fluxofpeoplefromPalmyra.Sofar,CoreReliefItems(CRIs)for1,500individualshavebeendispatchedtoAlQutaifehwhichislocatedonthemainroadtowardstheHomsgovernorateas itisconsideredtheassemblypointforIDPsfleeingtheNorthernareasofRuralDamascus.AllfamiliessofarthathavereachedAlQutaifehhavebeenassistedwithCRIsbyUNHCR.On29May,AOGs seizedAriha in the Idlib governoratewhichhasastrategiclocationoverseeingthemainhighwaysbetweenAleppo,HamaandthecoastalareainSyria.ThefightinginArihaandthesurroundingtownshasledtoasignificantinfluxofcivil-ianstowardstheAlGhabareainruralHama.UNHCRiscontinu-ingtoprovideemergencyhumanitarianassistancetotheIDPsthere.

AttheendofMay,UNHCRreachedanothermilestonewhenitdistributeditsfivemillionthCRIin2015.AsofstartofJune5,229,392CRIshadbeendispatchedto1,184,230 beneficiar-ies,despitethemanychallengessuchasinsecurityfacedonadailybasisbyUNHCRstaff.
On04June,UNHCRparticipatedinanInter-Agency(IA)crossmissiontothevillagesofKafrHamraandMaaretAlArtiq,located10kmawayfromAleppocityandcontrolledbyAOGs.UNHCR’scontributionwasCoreReliefItemsfor5,000individuals.
Duringa recent visitbyUNHCR toAlKarnakIDP camp in Tartous the teammetMoham-med Amin Ahmad who was displaced fromtheKarmAl-NahhasNeighborhoodinAleppocityduetoinsecurityoverayearago.
Fearing for the livesofhiswifeand tenchil-drenhesentthemtoTartousoverayearandahalfagoandlaterjoinedthemintheAlKar-nak IDPcamp.Mohammaddescribedexitingthe neighborhood under the cover of night“likeasmuggler”soasnottobecaughtbythearmedgroupsthere.
However, despite all thisMohammed contin-ues to be optimistic and has even opened alittle business repairing household applianceswhichhasproventobeagreathelptobothin-habitantsofthecampandotherpeoplefromthearea.HewasverygratefulfortheassistanceprovidedbyUNHCRsuchasthefamilytentanditsCRIkitaswellastherecreationalandPSSac-tivitiesorganizedbyUNHCR’spartnersthathisyoungerchildrenusuallyparticipatein.

safe Road use campaign launched by unHcR
ThisyearaspartoftheUNDecadeofActionforRoadSafety,UNHCRSyriaparticipatedinthecampaign“VisionZero”onsaferoaduselaunchedon10June2015.ThecampaignraisesawarenessandunderlinestheactionsthatshouldbetakentopreventroadcrashesandensuresafetyofUNHCRstaffontheroadandthesuccessofUNHCRoperations,ef-fectivenessandreputationwithgovernments,partners,andthelocalcommunity.Thecampaigncomprisesworkshopsandmaterialhighlightingsaferoadusetogetherwithactivitiesimbeddingsaferoadusefirmlyintheoperations.
TheUNHCRSafeRoadUseCampaignisthebeginningofalong-termstrategicefforttoreducethenumberandimpactofroadcrashesinvolvingUNHCRstaffandallpeoplewithwhomitworks.ThiscampaignisespeciallywelcomedinSyriabecauseon28July2014,aUNArmoredVehiclewhichwasreturningfromamissioninAleppowasinvolvedinanac-cidentseveralkilometerspastNabekonthewaytoDamascus,asaresultofabursttyre.Thecarflippedoverseveraltimes,resultedinthesaddeathofoneoftheUNfamilymemberswhowaswellknownandwelllikedamongstallhisUNcolleaguesandissadlymissed.

Globally, road crashes constitute the 8th biggest cause of death and are the leading killer of 15-29 year olds. More than 1.24 million people lose their lives and another 50 million are injured on the world’s roads every year. Half of those killed are pedes-trians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
