Mumbai: ‘Late to bed and early to rise’could well be the New Age recipe forheart disease.

It is no longer only what you eat anddrink that determines your ill-health,sleep deprivation is fast emerging as akey reason for heart ailments. Recentresearch from London, which shows

that a person who sleeps less than sixhours a night has a 48% higher risk ofdeveloping or dying from heart dis-ease, could hold true for Mumbaikarstoo, say doctors.

Cardiologist Brian Pinto recalledthe death of a friend’s 43-year-old sonwho collapsed while jogging at 5.45 am.“Youngsters are cutting down on theirsleep to accommodate more workhours and exercise as they feel they are

overweight. But without at least sevenhours of sleep a night, this can be a rec-ipe for disaster,’’ said Pinto.

A B Mehta, a cardiologist, said,“More than 60% of patients who landup in a hospital’s emergency roomwith a heart attack are first-timers whohave never suspected they had heartdisease. In many cases, strenuous exer-cising and sleeplessness would be com-mon features before the episode.’’

Doctors believe that the link be-tween sleep deprivation and heart dis-ease is ignored by all. In fact, researchsays poor sleep could also lead tostrokes. The University of Warwickstudied 4.7 lakh people in eight coun-tries, including the US, the UK and Ja-pan, to establish this equation. “If yousleep less than six hours per night andhave disturbed sleep, you stand a 48%greater chance of developing or dyingfrom heart disease and a 15% greaterchance of developing or dying of astroke,’’ the university team said. Itadded, “Late to bed and early to rise is aticking time bomb for health.”

Mumbai: The Bombay high court saidconsuming alcohol and abusing and beat-ing one’s wife amounts to cruelty andcould drive her to suicide and orderedPune-based Ibrahim Nabi Sayyed to under-go three years’ rigorous imprisonment.

“The accused used to willfully con-sume alcohol and used to abuse and beathis wife regularly. Such conduct was like-ly to drive the wife to commit suicide and,therefore, he is guilty of subjecting hiswife to cruelty,” said Justice J H Bhatia,dismissing Ibrahim’s appeal.

Ibrahim was convicted by a sessionscourt in 1993 under sections 498A (hus-band or relative of husband of a womansubjecting her to cruelty) and 306 (abet-ment of suicide) of IPC after his secondwife Farida burnt herself to death.

Ibrahim was addicted to liquor andused to beat his first wife under the influ-ence. He continued after his second mar-

riage and Farida committed suicidethree-and-a-half years after marriage.

After Farida, died of 100% burn inju-ries in 1991, Ibrahim had tried to pass it offas an accident. The court refused to buythe theory as police had found a kerosenecan and match stick near her body.

“If it is shown that a woman had com-mitted suicide within seven years of ma-rriage and her husband or his relativeshad subjected her to cruelty, the courtmay presume that suicide had been abet-ted by them,” said the judgment.

The police claimed Rhea was tobe arrested for robbery as her familyin Mumbai had filed a complaint

that she had stolen valuables beforerunning away. Activists said theycould not produce any documents.

The two had met at a coachingcentre in Mumbai and becameclose friends. Gradually, they real-ized that their sexual orientationwas different and expressed theirfeelings for each other. Since then,they have been in a relationship.

Rhea claims her family has notcome to terms and has been discou-raging her from pursuing her edu-cation in Mumbai. The girl allegesshe was a victim of violence in her

house and accuses her brother ofinflicting abuse.

Frustrated by the circumstanc-es at home, Rhea, with her partner,decided to elope in January thisyear. The girls first went to Pune

and from there shifted base to Bel-gaum in Karnataka. Finally, theycame to Delhi via Mumbai on Ja-nuary 11 and got in touch with San-gini, an NGO which works withwomen and creates awarenessabout their sexual health.
