The Menomonee Falls PlanCommission supported an industrial userequest March 3 that will allow a ware-house building on land south of ManhardtDrive and east of Lilly Road.

Town Realty submitted an industrialuse request for a 146,423-square-footbuilding that would provide warehousespace for up to four tenants. The buildingis part of a concept plan that includesanother warehouse building that would beconstructed in the future.

At the start of discussion, Director ofCommunity Development Matt Carranexplained that the site had been the loca-tion of operations for Best Block for 45years. Entrances to the site would be fromManhardt Drive and the first buildingwould include a parking lot with 190stalls. Carran noted that there are not cur-rently tenants for the building. Carran latersaid that as tenants are identified theremay a modification to landscaping pro-posed for the site.

Village President Randy Newmansought clarification for granting an indus-trial use for what was described as a"speculative" building. Carran said that aslong as the use is permitted under the zon-ing for the property, the plans can goahead. He said if there is a use that wouldtrigger a conditional use permit, thatwould come to the Plan Commission andVillage Board for consideration.

Newman also said publicly that theuse is in conformance with the I-1Industrial Zoning District, so a public hear-ing is not required. Carran added that

each tenant will have to come to villagestaff for an occupancy permit.

In another matter, the commission gota first look at plans from the BoucherGroup for a Kia dealership and a FordQuick Lube and Certified Sales Center atN81 W12920 Leon Road. According toCarran, there was a building at the site forseveral decades but is was removed in2000 and the 7.7 acre property hasremained vacant.

Both operations would have 26 salesemployees, five office employees and 34technicians and lot staff, with 90 percentof the employees working full time.

"I don't have a problem with it. It's atough piece of property, it might be a nicefit there," Newman said.

Trustee Steve Raymonds also said hedidn't have a problem with the proposal.

For the request to proceed, the landuse component of the villageComprehensive Plan will need to bechanged from Industrial Land Use toCommercial Land Use. Also, the zoningwill have to be changed to add the OC-5Commercial Service Overlay District to theexisting I-1 Light Industrial District and aconditional use permit will have to beapproved. A public hearing is required forthe rezoning request.

Newman expressed concerns aboutholding the public hearings during theApril 7 Plan Commission, which will beheld at the Menomonee Falls CommunityCenter and which will not be recorded forbroadcast on the village cable accesschannel or website. Carran said the pub-lic hearing notices have already been pub-lished for the April 7 meeting.

Fishing licenses arenot needed by participants 12 and under,but all older participants and adults fish-ing must have a valid fishing license. Allparticipants must be accompanied by aparent or guardian. Refreshments and hotdogs will be available for $1.

This event is open for kids of all ages

to come and enjoy fishing with their fami-ly. Just bring your pole and bait. Therewill be goodie bags, and fantastic prizes.There prizes for the longest fish, but alsofor the best casting skills.

The Kettle Moraine Lutheran girlsbasketball team won a regional brack-et over the weekend to stay alive in theDivision 3 playoffs.

The Chargers opened the playoffswith a 44-21 win over the MilwaukeeSchool of Languages Feb. 27. Whilethe Chargers held an 8-5 lead after thefirst quarter, a 15-4 run in the secondquarter gave Kettle Moraine Lutheran a23-10 lead. The teams were scorelessfor the first 1:42 of the third quarter andtraded baskets the rest of the quarteruntil a three point basket at the buzzerby Sharla Boelke gave the Chargers a30-15 lead.

Rain garden grant program deadline approaches

In partnership with the Graham MartinFoundation, the Waukesha CountyDepartment of Parks and Land Use is offer-ing native plants for rain gardens at half offthe normal retail price. Native plants, includ-ing Purple Coneflower and Black-eyedSusan’s, that normally retail for $3.60 will beavailable for $1.80 per two inch pottedplant for orders received by March 18th.

A rain garden is a sunken garden with aflat bottom that collects water from a down-spout and other sources, which helps soakrunoff into the soil. Runoff is water that runsoff roof-tops, roads and even lawns that car-ries a variety of pollutants like fertilizers, petwaste and oil into our local rivers andstreams. Rain gardens prevent runoff, themajor source of water pollution, from reach-ing our local rivers and lakes.

“State of Our Waters” ProgramMarch 14th

The Waukesha County Department ofParks and Land Use in partnership with theState of Wisconsin DNR and UW-Extension,will offer a State of Our Waters program.Kris Stepenuck, the state’s StreamMonitoring Program Director with the WaterAction Volunteer program, will be summariz-ing the hard work of many WaukeshaCounty Citizen Stream Monitor Volunteers ina “State of Our Waters” program. The freeprogram begins at 1:00 p.m. at RetzerNature Center located at S14 W28167Madison St, Waukesha and is open to thepublic.

According to Jayne Jenks, the localstream monitoring coordinator, WaukeshaCounty had 33 different stream sites moni-tored in 2014. Monitors collect informationat their site every month including dissolvedoxygen, temperature, turbidity, flow and biot-ic index. This information is used in local

management plans such as the “PewaukeeRiver Watershed Protection Plan”. The datais also used by the Wisconsin DNR to helpguide decision making for the protection ofrivers and streams. There are volunteers thathave been monitoring for over 10 years withnew volunteers joining each year.Collectively, they donate almost 400 hoursof volunteer service every year. Their com-mitment is valuable to maintain our localrivers and streams as outstanding recreation-al assets.

Everything that worked inGermantown’s favor the night before intheir first round win at home went wrong atArrowhead in their Division 1 regional finalgame, Feb. 28. The 54-47 loss ended theirseason.

Germantown played the last seven min-utes of the opening quarter without seniorguard Taylor Higginbotham. She picked uptwo quick fouls in 58 seconds asArrowhead scored the first four points of thegame. Germantown rallied on baskets bysenior forward Courtney Wahl and sopho-more forward Olivia Verdin to lead afterone period, 8-6.

Down 18-14 with 3 minutes 43 secondsremaining in the first half, Germantownwent on a 10-4 run to close out the secondquarter, thanks to three-point baskets bysenior guard Val Meissner and sophomoreguard Kenzie Schmitz. Junior forwardChloe Bingenheimer, who was fouled with0.9 seconds remaining in the half, madeboth free throws to give Germantown a slim24-22 advantage.

The momentum that Germantowngained to start the second half quicklyevaporated between late third quarter andmid fourth quarter. Higginbotham, who wasscoreless in the first half, had four pointsearly in the second half. Schmitz added sixpoints in the third quarter. Germantown gotall their points in that quarter from bothplayers to lead 34-30. Arrowhead scored10 straight points in a five minute stretch togo from four points down to six points up at40-34.

“They hit some big shots,” Germantowncoach Matt Stuve said. “Liv (Olivia) blocksa couple of shots. They kept getting (theball) back and they ended up with two(baskets). They were pretty good defensivepossessions. You get blocks like that insideand they hit some big shots and ours didn’tfall enough.”

Germantown came back to tie thegame at 40-40 with 3:52 left in regulationon back-to-back three-point plays bySchmitz and Higginbotham, but it came ata price on the defensive end with Meissnerand Higginbotham each picking up theirfourth fouls 20 seconds apart. Meissner’s

last game in a Germantown uniform cameto an end when she fouled out with 2:10left. After Verdin fouled out with 1:05remaining.

Stuve felt that his team was anchored attimes on offense with an aggressive hands-on approach by Arrowhead, which keptthem off balance. “Their guards were veryphysical,” he said. “

Teams like Germantown andArrowhead usually wouldn’t meet until thesectional round, but that wasn’t the case thisyear. “That’s life in our regional,” Stuvesaid. “Usually you would get your game ortwo to ease into the playoffs and that does-n’t happen in this regional.”

With Higginbotham leading the way forGermantown (20-3) with 22 points, theWarhawks did enough to keep the peskyChargers from pulling off an upset.

“To get a first round win is always excit-ing,” Higginbotham said. “It kept themomentum going into our next game. Wegot a little down (in the second half), but itwas exciting to finish strong going into (theArrowhead) game.”

Dan Lutz was selected as the new headfootball coach at Menomonee Falls HighSchool last week.

Lutz is a current assistant coach at theschool. He was previously the head coachat Brookfield Academy. Lutz previouslyserved as a volunteer with the MenomoneeFalls program in the early 2000s and laterserved as an assistant at BrookfieldAcademy and Sussex Hamilton.

Brookfield Academy named him thehead coach in 2007. Lutz guided the BlueKnights from the bottom to the top of theconference as they won the MidwestClassic North Conference in 2008 andtook a share of the title in 2009.

“I’m excited to be the next head foot-ball coach of one of the best programs inthe state,” Lutz said. “I’ve loved being partof the program for many years and I ameager to build upon our deep traditionsand success.”

“Dan has a great rapport with playersas he spends countless hours with athletesof all programs in the weight room yearround. He brings passion and excitementinto the role,” said Athletic Director Ryan

Anderson. “The hiring team cited Dan’sdeep knowledge and love of the game offootball. Dan has been a positive influencefor all who encounter him. I am eager tosee where Dan takes the program from thispoint on.”

Lutz has coached football since 1996starting with the St. Bernadette FootballLeague. He started his high school coach-ing career in 2001. Throughout his years,he has worked with both sides of the ball.Most recently, he was the co-defensivecoordinator at Menomonee Falls HighSchool. Lutz will be working on addingassistants to his staff. He quickly tabbed hiscoordinators. He named Falls grad anddefensive guru Erich Rutsch as his defensivecoordinator. He promoted former quarter-backs coach, Bobby Regent-Smith as theoffensive coordinator.

“I am excited to lead such a quality pro-gram. I am eager to work with MenomoneeFalls High School students, and staff, and Ilook forward to getting out in the communi-ty,” Lutz said. “It means a lot for me tocoach in my hometown of MenomoneeFalls.”

If Hamilton would’ve pressuredGermantown the entire game, it may havebeen a different outcome. “We didn’t want

to get into a fast paced game,” Hamiltoncoach Bill Scasny said. “We wanted toslow them down. So by (using half courtpressure D), we were able to slow the paceof the game down. We didn’t want to getinto a racehorse with them because if youlook at their (past games), they like to runup the score. We wanted to keep the pacemore favorable, which I think we did bydoing it that way.”

Junior guard Taylor Klug and sopho-more guard Macy Williams led Hamiltonwith 11 points each. Sophomore forwardMegan Schmitt added eight. Senior guardVal Meissner finished with 10 points forGermantown. Hamilton finished their sea-son at 15-8.
