• The brothers tare up the coat and dip it in animal blood to take to their father

• Jacob morns and will not be comforted saying, "go down to sheol in mourning." (37:35) Sheol = death

• Joseph (37:1-50:26) −Judah and Tamar (38:1-30)

• Judah takes a wife from the Canaanites, Shua (38:1-4)

−Her first son was Er; next two were Onan and Shelah

• Judah took a wife for Er, Tamar (38:6-11)−Er did evil and God took him (7)−Onan was to take her for his wife and raise and

offspring for his brother but he refused (wasted his seed)

−This was displeasing to God and so God took his life (10)

−Judah worries about losing his last son so he sends Tamar back to her father until Shelah is of age (probably not intending to keep his promise)

• Joseph (37:1-50:26) −Tamar tricks Judah to get and offspring

(38:12-26)• After Judah's wife dies (12), Judah’s

daughter-in-law, Tamar, dresses as a temple prostitute to get pregnant by Judah since he had not given her to Shelah as he promised (13-14)

• Judah does not have a goat by which to pay so she asks for his signet ring, cord, and staff as a pledge but could not find her later (15-23)

• Three months later Judah is informed that Tamar "has played the harlot” and Judah says she is to be burned(24);

• Tamar sends the things she got from Judah and says it is the owner of those things that is the father (25); Judah says she is more righteous than he. He did not keep his agreement with her (26)

Pharaoh−Joseph gather a great deal of grain and stored it

near the cities where it was harvested - so much he stopped measuring it

−Two sons born to him, Manasseh (making to forget) because God made him to forget his troubles and Ephraim (fruitfulness) because God made him fruitful in the land of his affliction (41:50-52)

• Joseph says they will stay in prison until one of them goes to bring the youngest brother to prove what they say is true; puts them in prison for three days. After three days Joseph keeps Simeon and sends the others back to bring Benjamin.

• One of them finds his money returned in his sack while feeding the donkeys, later all find their money in their sacks of grian

• They tell their father, Jacob, what happened in Egypt

• They bring their worries to Joseph's steward at his house as they are waiting for Joseph

• Simeon is brought out to them and Joseph asks them about their father after he arrives for the meal

• Joseph sees his younger brother and goes out to weep

• They were seated according to their birth which surprised them and Benjamin's portion was five time the others but Joseph eats separate as Egyptian would do when with non-Egyptians

in their sacks and his silver cup in Benjamin's sack

• They left a first light and Joseph tells his steward to pursue them and ask them why they repaid evil for good and stole his cup of divination. He overtakes them and they tell him to search and he finds it in Benjamin's sack

• They tore their clothes and returned to the city and bowed down before Joseph in fear

• Joseph tells them they have done a bad deed and besides did they not know he "can practice divination." (44:15).

• Joseph says only the one in who's bag the cup was found will be a slave

• Judah talks to Joseph and explains that the loss of the youngest son will kill their father because he has already lost and earlier son

• Judah asks to stay in place of Benjamin

life−the famine still has five years to go−to keep them alive by a "great deliverance"−it was not them who sent him to Egypt but God−God made him lord of Pharaoh's household and

use to bring their families as Pharaoh was happy for Joseph

• Joseph gives them changes of garment but to Benjamin he gave five changes and 300 pieces of silver

• Tells them to go but not to quarrel on the way

−Idea may be they are not to accuse each other of past sins

• They arrive in Canaan and tell Jacob Joseph is alive and ruler over the land of Egypt

• He could hardly believe it but saw the wagon and things that Joseph sent

• Jacob plans to go to Egypt

• This fulfill what God had told Abraham when He made a covenant with him

• Five brothers presented to Pharaoh and he makes them feel welcomed

• Pharaoh asks their occupation. They say shepherds and that the pasture land in Canaan was not good because of the famine

• Pharaoh tells Joseph that his family can have the land in Goshen and if there are some capable men, put them in charge of his livestock

• Jacob is presented to Pharaoh and blesses Pharaoh at the age of 130 years. They settled in the land of Ramses as Pharaoh ordered and they had enough food according to their little ones (1876 BC)

− Separation from Egyptian may have been sought by Joseph because of their idolatry and staying faithful to the covenant

• Jacob blesses Manasseh and Ephraim but switches hands and puts his right hand on Ephraim's head but when Joseph tries to stop his father Jacob says the younger shall be greater than the older

• Ruben - will not be the leader since he "went up to his father's bed"

• Simeon and Levi - slew men in anger so they will be dispersed in Jacob (among the tribes). Due to the killing of those associated with the rape of Dinah. Simeon will receive inheritance in Judah (see Jos. 19:1)

• Judah - father's sons will bow down, Judah is a lion's welp (Ez. 19:5-7; Mic. 5:8), scepter will not depart from Judah nor the rulers staff until Shiloh comes (means until he comes to whom it belongs), to him (Jesus) will be the obedience of the peoples. (Shiloh means "rest bringer" per Smith)
