Class 2 Part 2 Crufts Semi Final Qualifier Adv. Freestyle
Sponsored in Memory of Robbie and Angus Neville
Judges Lesley Brocklehurst, Michelle Hubbard, Linda Glover
Class report by Mary Muxworthy
1st Kath Hardman with Stillmoor Extra Special, a Border Collie Dog (03/03/11), performing to "Top Hat Medley" by London
Musicians Orchestra.
The props of a hat stand, top hat, tail coat and white scarf were in the ring prior to the entry of Kath and Denby, setting the scene
perfectly. We saw Kath and Denby moving round the ring at speed together combined with a lovely combination of jumps using
the scarf and hat stand together. Denby was thoroughly enjoying working in the ring to this flowing piece of music and really
showed off his super high trot at fast pace which was complimented by some snappy foot work by Kath to make a stunning
combination. Again we saw some further jumps by Denby which were executed accurately and enthusiastically. The routine
finished with Denby balancing the top hat on his nose. This was a very enjoyable and polished performance.
2nd Cathy Bates with Ruskath Lyrical Image, a Working Sheepdog Bitch (14/08/12), performing to "Primo Cane” by The Pao
Doubles.
What a fabulous start to this routine with Cathy bending and Sybil going round with her front paws on Cathy’s back then pawing
the ground. This was a content packed routine with Sybil working at a huge distance from Cathy, spinning, turning, going
effortlessly up into highs. Sybil worked happily all through the routine; I really liked a forward and back movement through
Cathy’s legs and the cape. Very effective use of the bull’s horns with Sybil holding, circling, pushing and finally triumphant! Wow
– the audience loved it !
3rd Lesley Neville with Brambledale Blue Dewy, a Bearded Collie Dog (09/02/12), performing to "Chattanooga Choo Choo" by
Glen Miller.
Lesley really looked the part entering the ring for this performance, smartly dressed in her uniform with the buttons polished. This
is a lovely, swinging piece of music which Lesley interpreted to good effect with very nice sequences, reverses and jumps. Lesley
used stillness in the routine to accentuate some lovely poses by Dewy such as paws on the cane. Again there were further
sequence of poses and jumps which suited the music perfectly, and a lovely use of the flag with the jumps.
4th Kim Lyddon with Pippanabbey Lord Lyddon, a Pyrenean Sheepdog Dog (26/11/11), performing to "I Am A Cider Drinker"
by The Wurzels.
We were treated to Kim’s inimitable style, contagious good humour and obvious enjoyment in her performance in this routine.
Archie worked with happy enthusiasm, showing nice paw work on the ‘emergency cider supply’ box and multi use of the cider
flagon prop. It was a pleasure to watch Kim having fun in the ring with the irrepressible Archie.
5th Louise Ince with Decoyman's Piper Edward, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Dog (06/06/12), performing to "You're
The One That I Want" by John Travolta and Olivia Newton John.
This routine began with Louise moving confidently round the ring with a very happy dog. There was lovely close heelwork with
fast moving walk backs, interpreting the music beautifully. I really liked one particular sequence which showed Louise walking
backwards with the dog behind incorporating bows which interpreted the music well. There was a lovely ‘Aaaah ‘pose to finish!
6th Diane Jones with Kenmilfore Aniseed, a Standard Poodle Dog (10/09/04), performing to "Grandfather Clock/Syncopated
Clock" by Jonny Cash/Boston Pops Orchestra.
The scene was set for this routine by Diane’s appearance as a ‘Grandad’ and 2 beautifully presented ‘Grandfather Clock’ props.
There were some very nice mirroring sequences which fitted the staccato rhythm of the music perfectly and the ‘ticking’ of the
clock. We also enjoyed a lovely ‘out run’ round the ring. During the ‘Syncopated Clock’ section of the routine we saw some
lovely free out and close work. It was so nice to see a poodle in the ring, working well and thoroughly enjoying themselves.
7th Mark Collins with Lady Blaze of Snowdonia, a Working Sheepdog Bitch (31/03/11), performing to "Thriller" by Michael
Jackson.
True to the theme of his music, Mark certainly looked the part entering the ring wearing a grotesque mask and wig; two beautifully
made ‘gravestone’ props also set the scene. Blaze was not put off in the slightest by Mark’s appearance and worked happily,
demonstrating her super outrun round the gravestones. There were some lovely sequences in this routine which interpreted the
Thriller music well. Also included was some nice work with Mark on the floor, jumps and paw work.

Getting To Know You More profiles from our members. Please send your profiles, with photos if possible, to
8th Linda Webster with Isabella Gal, a Working Sheepdog Bitch (15/10/09), performing to "Robinson Crusoe" by City of Prague
Philharmonic Orchestra.
This was a routine full of content; included were a well executed beg and roll over, distance work and circling. The props
including a real camp fire were all used beautifully and to good effect. The routine concluded with a lovely roll in the camp
blanket.
Also worked;
Pamela Ruscoe with Cheeky Keeva of Kilkenny, a Crossbreed Bitch (unkn DOB), performing to "Mr Wendal/Price Tag/I Got
Bills" by Arrested Development, Jessie J, Lunch Money Lewis.
Several props set the scene for this routine with a shovel, trashbin and money. There was some very nice free flowing circling
and jumping in different parts of the ring. I really liked a mirroring sequence incorporating bending and digging which interpreted
the theme of the routine perfectly.
Trained;
Dylan Smith with Corriedhu Chase, a Border Collie Dog (19/10/08), performing to "Brick In The Wall/Schools Out" by Pink
Floyd/Alice Cooper.
Dylan’s patient handling of this full on enthusiastic fabulous dog was a pleasure to watch. Dylan worked Chase calmly throughout
– Chase was SO happy when the time came in the routine for him to hold Dylan’s cane! There was some nice interpretation of
the music and interesting moves using a skateboard, with Chase moving happily round the ring. Dylan decided to change the
performance to a training round and continued his calm and soothing handling.
Nicci Hindson with Ravestar Scarlet Dancer, a Working Sheepdog Bitch (26/06/11), performing to "Jai Ho" by The Pussy Cat
Dolls.
The scene was set for this flowing routine by the lovely atmospheric music and a super pose by Nala. We saw fabulous musical
interpretation incorporating some lovely sequences; I especially liked a weaving sequence round Nicci which enhanced the
musical interpretation and a further sequence with the silk scarf, Nala worked both enthusiastically and accurately throughout and
she and Nicci made a superb team. This was a fabulous performance.
Janice Gibbons with Aritaur Aphrodite, a Doberman Bitch (03/01/10), performing to "In The Summertime” by Mungo Jerry.
This training round began with a fabulous opening sequence using a folding chair and a towel which really evoked a lazy, hot
summers day. Deana and Janice used their time in the ring very effectively, trying out and practising some new behaviours. I will
look forwards to seeing the finished routine, hopefully not too far in the future.
Christina Oxtoby with Legacy's Ruach, a Great Dane Dog (04/04/07), performing to "Sway" by The Pussycat Dolls.
This was a lovely swaying motivational training round by Christina and Ru.
Lucy Creek with Harriot Skiffle King, a Border Collie Dog (21/09/09), performing to "Minor Swing" by Django Reinhardt.
This was an entertaining, accurate, stunning display by Lucy and Skiff, trying out some behaviours such as Skiff hopping
backwards on 3 legs. Their work together truly showed a dog’ s joy of working and was a privilege to watch.
Sent in by Diane Jones, with my apologies for not putting this article into the Spring Newsletter.
2016 Crufts. Thursday and Friday.
I was over the moon when Ann asked myself and Ody to be part of the HTM
activities for two days. I did not tell my club until a month before, I had to cancel my
Thursday classes. (feeling guilty) They were very pleased for me as this was my
first time. Travelling to Rugby Barn for practise sessions as this was the nearer to
me. (journey of 3 and half hours each way). My thanks go to Lesley Brocklehurst
for her time. They were fab sessions so friendly. Ruth and I left at 4am Thursday
morning to get to Crufts. My next proud moment was when Ann asked me and Ody
to join the main arena team for the Thursday. Wow!
Ody did his short version of grandfathers clock in the activities ring. He was a star.
Nothing phases him. He loves to strut his stuff. I was very proud to wear a Crufts
shirt, Ody his fab union jack bandana. The two days were very busy for us talking
to people about Ody and in the pen talking about HTM. (the Friday I lost my voice) I
could go on talking about my fabulous two days it was such a buzz for me. Ann
you were a great leader in getting us all together and sorting all the timetables,
music props etc. Such a great atmosphere.
Thank you so very much. Also my thanks to Ruth for being my run around looking after my other two dogs.
Then on the Saturday I was presented with my KCAI in Companion Dog Training and non competitive HTM at the Kennel Club
stand.
A really great 2016 Crufts for me. Thank you .

Class 1 Starters Heelwork To Music
Sponsored Alimagic K9 Services
Judges Nicci Hindson, Helen Dennis
Class Report By Gill Crawford
Thank you for asking me to report on the Starters Heelwork to music Class.
I thoroughly enjoy watching the starter classes not only because its nice to see new blood coming in to the sport but also there
are usually a nice variety of breeds.
1st Penny Hudson with It's Just Jolly Jasper, a West Highland White Terrier Dog (08/12/14), working to "My Baby Just Cares
For Me" by Jools Holland and Florence Welch.
A great bouncy piece of music “My Baby Just Cares For Me” by Jools Holland suited Jasper as he strutted round the ring like he
owned it. Jasper’s tail never stopped wagging and as usual Penny never stopped smiling as his changes of pace were effortless.
What a super team and they went on to be presented with a very well earned 1st Place.
2nd Andrea McHugh with Little Miss Honey Pops, a Crossbreed Bitch (13/06/11), working to "Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison.
Andrea was dressed all in black with lots of glitter. Honey’s little floppy ears bounced about as she high stepped around the ring.
Showing off some really cute moves left the audiences oooooing and awwwwing. A very attentive round gained this pair a well
earned 2nd place.
3rd Jackie Town with Uzziel of Faith, a Portuguese Water Dog Dog (17/09/11), working to "Snoopy v's The Red Baron" by The
Guardsmen.
Uzzie bounced in to the ring sporting a lovely red bandanna with Jackie dressed as a pilot . Lots of enthusiasm from both handler
and dog as they performed. Uzzie worked happily and I certainly smiled as I watched this duo entertain us, they went on to gain a
3rd place
4th Jackie Town with Mercurial Mister MacKenzie, a Crossbreed Dog (01/10/08), working to "Coffee" by Josh Woodward.
Kenzie was sporting a very dapper spotted neckerchief and looked great as he presented Jackie with the daily newspaper at the
start of her routine. He then proceeded to stop and have a scratch but Jackie soon get his attention again and went on to do an
enthusiastic round using different paces.
5th Margaret Whisker with Mysterious Millicent, a Crossbreed Bitch (Unknown), working to "It's Getting Better" by Mamas and
Papas.
Millie did some great positions and was given lots of encouragement by Margaret as the routine got under way. This sweet little
crossbreed had a little look around but soon bounced back showing off with some super twists and twirls.
6th Kevin Grindley with Beaumere Winter Star, a Shetland Sheepdog Bitch (10/01/09), working to "Crocket's Theme" by Jan
Hammer.
Beaumerre Winter Star, a little Shetland Sheepdog, or Kayla to her friends, gently wagged her tail all the way through their
performance. This well turned out little girl was supported throughout by Kevin who was dressed in a smart white suit. Kevin’s
quiet handling supported and encouraged Kayla very well.
7th Penny Hudson with It's Just Happy Harry , a West Highland White Terrier Dog (01/02/05), working to "Blue Smoke" by
Dolly Parton.
What a lovely duo these two are, Harry is such a happy little soul and Penny entered the ring wearing a glittery blouse and
cowboy hat. This is a nice catchy tune, perfect for Harry and ideal for Penny to keep him moving in a great upbeat way.
Waggy tail and cheeky faced Harry bounced around the ring and Penny was so obviously pleased with him as she let out a huge
“Yeh!” at the end of the performance.
Trained;
Jane Page with Little Miss Dinah Might, a Working Sheepdog Bitch (01/07/13), working to "Swinging Shepherd Blues" by Ted
Heath.
Jane and Dinah started their routine slowly around the ring and then after some lovely moves Dinah is rewarded with her ball.
6
Working attentively this pretty little tricolour was a happy girl and completed the round by hiding behind her paws. A great routine
in the making.
Lyn Coupland with Agemmalogical Delight, a Working Sheepdog Bitch (05/05/08), working to "Darling Pretty” by Dire Straits.
Using a tennis ball which Gemma loved she was given praise for her really nice attention after losing her a little.. A slow pace to
start with and then moving on to other paces and positions. A happy little collie enjoying time in the ring with her mum. Nice
positive training.
Sally Rapson with Cal's Commander Kye, a Greyhound Dog (21/10/10), working to "My Sad Captains" by Elbow.
Elegance entered the ring in the form of a beautiful Greyhound. Kye moves very smoothly, with a majestic wag of his black and
white tail which is almost as long as his body. The duo then showed off how he can really move by picking up the pace.
Great encouragement from Sally produced a lovely training round.
Sally Rapson with Doddridge Sahm, a Whippet Dog (08/10/12), working to "I'd Do Anything" by Lionel Bart.
Sally chose to do a training round with Piper and they practiced some lovely moves making it look as if Piper was dancing on his
tip toes. Sally encouraged Piper and they used the whole ring moving at different paces. A lovely training round and a pleasure
to watch.
Well done to everyone who entered the class, there were some lovely dogs in it and if I were to pick my personal favourite it
would have to be Sally Rapsons Greyhound, such a beautiful elegant boy.
Well done to everyone who participated and once again thank you to Canine Freestyle GB for trusting me with the class report.
Class 2 Part One Crufts Semi Final Qualifier Advanced HTM
Sponsored in Memory of Ginnie and Tipp Hardman
Judges Lesley Brocklehurst, Cathy Bates, Ann DeRizzio
Class Report by Alisanne Buck
I was very pleased to be asked to write the report for this class and looked forwarded to watching some fabulous routines. There
were 21 entries in this part but only finished with 10 working routines due to a lot of teams having to withdraw from the show
because of that old enemy Kennel Cough being in their area, such a shame for them but of course the 21 day exclusion rule is
important and we should appreciate the teams for complying with it and keeping our dogs safe.
1st Helen Dennis with Goddess Spring of Jucando, a Working Sheepdog Bitch (17/01/09), working to "SOS" by Cast of
Mama Mia.
Helen was last to work in part 1 and had intended to do a training round so did not bring her outfit, but she changed her mind
literally two minutes before working and thank goodness she did, they gave a fabulous performance, maybe it helped that she
didn't have time to have nerves as they looked very relaxed and happy throughout with great attention, some nice touches in the
choreography like the step forward, step across, done in good synchronicity and Helen really makes use of the music changes to
good effect and an eye catching standing back to back finish.
2nd Jeanette Fyfe with Garrellglen Spring Dancer, a Golden Retriever Dog (21/03/14), working to "Stuck Like Glue" by
Sugarland.
Dressed in country style blue checked shirt with blue fringing Jeanette created a fun and pacy routine, no part of the ring was left
untouched and they kept the energy throughout. This is such an honest dog whose lively stride shows great musicality and
Jeanette works well to utilise this in her routine. A popular result with the audience and judges alike.
3rd Naomi Baggaley with Jacobrad Sunday Girl at Paulincuss, a German Shepherd Bitch (03/05/09), working to "Spirit of
The Hawk" by Rednex.
Naomi looked every inch the part in her Indian squaw dress and tribal stick, the music has quite a contemporary feel without a
regular rhythm so choreographing to it takes skill and imagination, which Naomi certainly demonstrates. She tells a strong and
compelling story with her routine and the dog moves very well and freely for such a large breed. Great focus and timing and ring
use ensured a good score from the judges and a lovely end pose with Naomi kneeling and the dog standing behind her with paws
on Naomi's shoulders.
4th Christina Oxtoby with Legacy's Eze Ezekiel, a Border Collie Dog (15/07/06), working to "Feeling Good" by Michael Buble.
7
Christina looked smart in grey flannel trousers with a haze blue top, and Eze sporting a flashy glitter collar.- and Feeling Good? I
would think she was after this fabulous routine. Such a handsome looking team in the ring, Christina makes good use of her
lovely long legs to cover the ground so fast and smoothly. The dog moves in his positions with enthusiasm and even seems as if
he can feel the beat too, the routine built nicely with the music keeping in style with the theme and following the rhythm as it
wound gently down so did they.
5th Helen Boyd with Indijazz Showstopper, a German Shorthaired Pointer Dog (07/08/11), working to "Jealousy" by Will
Young.
Dressed in a denim shirt and jeans Helen is very adept at designing interesting and creative routines. She produces some nice
shapes with her Heelwork positions and both handler and dog appear completely engrossed in their routine, a great example of
Team Work.
6th Paul Ballard with Indiana Joy of April, a Border Collie Dog (01/03/08), working to "Everybody" by The Backstreet Boys.
I initially assumed Paul was doing a training round when I saw him dressed in a baseball cap, sweatshirt and denim shorts, but as
soon as he began working I realised his outfit was spot on to reflect a Street Dancer. Paul was the only male handler so he may
be forgiven for feeling conspicuous, but my goodness it clearly was not an issue for him. It almost shames me to say but he was
the only handler who actually danced and performed with their dog, he kept the character throughout the routine and the moves
but without detracting from the dogs work which is so hard to balance well. He produced a fun, well choreographed programme
including good pauses with the music and the dog remained 100% focused, responding fast and well to commands. Paul used
subtle signals to the dog, cleverly disguised as dance moves, he may have lost a few marks for accuracy from the judges but as a
performance this was one you enjoyed and remembered the most whilst driving home.
7th Louise Ince with Decoyman's Piper Edward, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Dog (06/06/12), working to "Push It" by
Salt 'N Pepa.
Louise has really improved her body posture and now looks out and not down into her dog all the time which gives such a smart
and confident impression. She nails the music changes perfectly with clear, clean cues which the dog responds promptly to. The
dog clearly enjoys working and one thing I noted is how the dog actually looks up to meet Louise's eyes- not hands or body which
shows great focus. Their Cross behind position was excellent in particular and all together a very strong routine.
8th Barbara Whittaker with Van De GayleStukken Leroy, a Border Collie Dog (16/06/12), working to "It's A Kind Of Magic" by
Queen.
Dressed in black hat, trousers and jacket with 'magic' in silver glitter on the back, Barbara looked very dazzling. This was such a
fun and novel routine with Barbara performing magic tricks throughout, most of us struggle to just remember our routines and give
the cues to our dogs at the right time without performing as a magician at the same time so hats off to Barbara for doing this.
Trouble is I found myself watching Barbara and not the dog which may be an issue for the judges too? But great ideas to see in
the ring.
Ann DeRizzio with Stillmoor Red Sky At Night, a Border Collie Dog (25/10/11), working to "Wizard of Oz Medley/If I Only Had
a heart/He's The Wiz/Slide Some Oil" by Judy Garland, Nipsy, Michael Jackson.
Ann Kindly gave up her place to Judge for this class.
Also worked;
Emma Yardley with Stillmoor Flynner Flyer, a Border Collie Dog (04/04/10), working to "Baked A Cake” by Ellen Barton.
Emma was dressed in a chefs hat and apron and chequered trousers and she did a very strong attempt of moving and acting with
the music to maintain the theme, unfortunately the dog got quite distracted by some noise outside the ring at the start but Emma
worked hard to get him back working and when she did he held some nice strong positions. He is a very stylish dog once he gets
moving and Emma performed well using all the available space.
Trained;
Janice Gibbons with Aritaur Aphrodite, a Doberman Bitch (03/01/10), working to "Hold My Hand" by Jess Glynne.
Janice used her round to train. It's good when you can see the handler has a 'plan' for what they want to achieve with their
training round and it certainly seemed like that with Janice. This is such a strong dog and Janice does a first rate job of keeping
control as its obvious how pushy she can be. This is shaping up to be a great routine so I hope Janice keeps working with it.
Andrea Rogers with Higglety Pigglety Goose, a Crossbreed Dog (12/01/12), working to "Bare Necessities/I wanna Be Like
You" by The Overtones.
This was a training round which Andrea divided well into work/play. I know you shouldn't make assumptions but when you note
the kennel name of a dog is Higglety Pigglety Goose you can't help but think 'this is a handler who wants to have fun with their
dog' and I reckon in this case you'd be right to think it. The thing that struck me the most was how Andrea was just beaming from
start to finish. Both she and her dog looked so happy and relaxed, so probably the most rewarding 4 minutes in the ring out of the
class.
Anne Shuker with Freckle Frenzy, a Crossbreed Bitch (01/10/11), working to "Live Out Loud" by Thea Gilmore.
Oh my goodness, could I love this dog any more, she is such a joy to watch and her enthusiasm and attitude are to die for. Ann
has such energy and speed in the ring and Freckles just thrives on it, unfortunately she became a bit too excited today and
started barking so eventually Ann stopped to give her some calming signals and then trained the remainder of the routine. But I
wanted to note this dogs side stepping is perfect and she holds her positions very strongly and it's nice to see the handler working
completely 'hands off' as it emphasises how accurate and well this little dog knows her job.
Annette Lowe with Kinaway Mystic Spires HTM A Ex FS I Ex, a Border Collie Dog (07/05/12), working to "The Liberty Bell" by
Phillip Jones Ensemble.
Annette used her time as a Training round, and this was a Masterclass of how to train and making good use of your time given. I
watched with open mouthed amazement at the focus and standard of work Annette achieved with her dog. I have seen and used
8
the technique of throwing a toy and having the dog ignore it but I don't think I've ever seen it executed as good as this. That dog
did not so much as flicker a hair towards the toy until Annette gave permission, but what was so great to see was the dogs attitude
did not drop at all when she threw the toy and asked for work. This is what we should all be aspiring to achieve, brilliant to see.
Class 2 Part 2 Crufts Semi Final Qualifier Advanced HTM
Judges Lesley Brocklehurst, Cathy Bates, Ann DeRizzio
Sponsored in Memory of Ginnie and Tipp Hardman
Class Report By Louise Ince
1st Karen Sykes with Kingsfarm Spring Surprise, a Working Sheepdog Bitch (06/04/13), working to "Hungarian Dance
No.5" by Hungarian Philharmonic Orchestra.
A very difficult routine for this young dog but Karen helped her and together they produced a stunning round, lovely to watch and a
well deserved winner.
2nd Susan Dooney with Murphy Mischief, a Working Sheepdog Dog (06/09/06), working to "Here Comes The Flood" by
Katie Melua.
Beautiful music and this dog is very committed to his positions and different directions used to keep this routine interesting and
very watchable, loved it.
3rd Carole Dodson with Kinaway Doctor Porter, a Border Collie Dog (02/11/10), working to "Illumielle" by Jo

Solace is a very happy enthusiastic dog, may have something to do with his liking for “Speckled Hen” beer! He marched steadi ly

using the ball, look forward to seeing the finished routine.

1st Grace Smith with Danica's Up To The Challenge, a Papillon Dog (29/11/10), working to "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins.
Grace and Kai were first to enter the ring to the applause of the audience. Her gorgeous Papillon did some super moves including
weaves and recalls. Well done to Grace for working hard when she needed to regain his attention. A particular move that I l iked
was when Kai put his paws on her knee as Grace moved in a small circle. I would like to call it a “Graceful-Pap-Pirouette”! A well
deserved 1st place.
2nd Erin Lee with Barkley Boo, a Crossbreed Dog (09/09/13), working to "Harry Potter - Hedwigs Theme" by John Williams.
Erin looked wonderful in her Harry Potter costume and Barkley, as always looked extremely elegant in the coat that nature
bestowed upon him. The first part of the routine was very challenging for Erin as her dance partner was definitely looking into the
possibility of becoming self employed! However, Erin did not give up and succeeded in interrupting his meandering to produce
some very nice moves indeed which included him walking very steadily on his hind legs. I loved their end pose which required
great skill and balance; Erin stood on one leg, her other bent high at the knee and Barkley holding her lower leg with both paws.
The picture was quite enchanting!

3rd Cathy Bates with Ruskath Lyrical Image, a Working Sheepdog Bitch (14/08/12), working to "Primo Cane" by The Paso

5th Angela Briggs with Wandering Coast To Coast, a Working Sheepdog Dog (07/07/06), working to "Reviewing The

6th Louise Ince with Decoyman's Piper Edward, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Dog (06/06/12), working to "You're The

It’s always a pleasure to watch this lovely dog’s movement and I noticed he had just had his 12 th birthday the day before! A nice

rewarded with the cap on his head to finish.
8th Lesley Brocklehurst with Rehyrb Makhaya, a Flat Coat Retriever Dog (04/01/10), working to "12th Street Rag" by Pee

Also worked;
Christina Oxtoby with Legacy's Ruach, a Great Dane Dog (04/04/07), working to "I Won't Dance/Sway" by Frank Sinatra/The

Christina had added extra voice over at the beginning which was very effective in giving a really unusual start. This lovely dog did
some great distance work and I noted that when a Great Dane is asked to put paws on your shoulders, it’s also eye to eye!
Linda Webster with Isabella Gal, a Working Sheepdog Bitch (15/10/09), working to "On The Street Where You Live” by Nat
King Cole.
The temperature in the hall was rising with the sun shining and this dog looked hot to begin with and a little unsure at times but
started to flow as the music continued. She performed a quiet round which was Linda’s aim. Good patient handling.

Heelwork To Music World Championships 2016
Moscow, Russia
By Karen Sykes
I thought that the opportunity to Judge the Heelwork to Music World
Championships was an honour that came just once in a lifetime. Imagine my
surprise and delight when I was invited to Judge again this year. As Head
Judge at the 2010 Championships in Denmark I worked hard to hone my skills
long before the competition arrived, studying the rules and ensuring that my
personal ‘live marking sheet’ conformed to those rules to enable me to judge each team fairly. This year was more of the same
but enhanced thanks to the internet which enabled a lot of interaction with my fellow judges prior to the competition.
There were 5 judges selected for the Moscow Championships and I was appointed Head Judge by the organisers. Technology
has moved on at a pace since 2010 and it was a luxury to be able to set up a Facebook Page and Messenger Group for the
judges to communicate with each other prior to the competition. My fellow judges were Esther Neimeijer from The Netherlands,
Johanna Saariluoma from Finland, Debra Benard from France and Olga Kuzina from Russia. Happily all of us understood English
which made communications much easier than they might otherwise have been.
Work began long before the competition looking at the rules which had been translated from Russian in an ‘interesting’ way!
What a stroke of luck it was to have Debra on the judging team when we discovered that she had worked as a translator for the
United Nations and was completely fluent in Russian! We set to work tweaking the translation until everyone was happy with the
modifications and Debra’s English version of the rules replaced the Pidgin English version on the World Show Website.
I have travelled to Russia twice before and although filling in the application form for the Visa is a testing and rigorous procedure it
had always gone smoothly. This time was somewhat different! Because the organisers, The Russian Kinological Federation
(RKF), wanted to pay direct for the visa and could not do so if I applied through VFS as before. So the game started – I was
asked to apply through an agency in the UK which would be able to invoice the RKF. Using the agency added to the number of
forms that I had to complete, extended the time that it took to complete the process and cost the RKF a lot more than it would
have done if I had applied direct to the Russian Visa Agency. However, having eventually jumped through the various hoops I
was now ready to complete part 2 of my visa application. Biometric testing is now part of the process which meant I had to travel
to London to hand in my application personally and provide my fingerprints. A further fee was paid for a member of the Visa
Agency to help me through the process. Their help amounted to meeting me outside the building, giving me the forms which I
had sent to them and then waiting outside for me to re-emerge from the building and say goodbye! What a waste of money! Be
warned – in my experience doing it yourself is cheaper and easier than going through an agency to get your Russian visa!
Thankfully booking my flights was much easier. I chose my preferred flight and the RKF booked it for me. I then booked my car
park for Heathrow, then cancelled it when I realised that you were not allowed to take hold luggage on the transfer from that
particular car park to Terminal 5. No way would I ever travel so light that I could do it on hand luggage alone – ask any of my
friends! A car park was duly re-selected and booked to accommodate my copious luggage.
The RKF then sent me a form to claim my expenses. Airport car park, travel to London for visa biometrics and
return mileage from home to Heathrow. All completed and returned, I thought that was it, oh no! Expenses
would be paid in Euros and mileage would be calculated in kilometres. Mustn’t grumble, the extra maths
would ensure my reimbursement!
One week prior to leaving we were sent our itinerary… Oh no! 5 formal dinners and black tie preferred at all
of them! Those who know me will know that my wardrobe consists of dog training clothes and a couple of
smart trousers and jackets for special judging appointments. Posh frocks have no place in my life! My first
solution was to look in my costume wardrobe as I have worn dresses for past routines which might be
suitable. Success! My costume for Fly’s ‘Tango de Roxanne’ was a little black dress which was perfect for
the occasion. Now I only had one new dress to shop for and thank goodness it was only one as it took 2 days

for me to find something suitable that didn’t cost an arm, a leg and two fingers! I must applaud Allan who actually offered to shop
with me and never complained once during the whole ordeal
Wednesday 22 June 2016
Up bright and early for my drive to Heathrow. The time of my flight was 10:50 so I left home at 5am to
give myself plenty of time to park, shuttle to the terminal and check in. Just as well that I did, the M25 was
living up to its reputation! Once in Terminal 5 the frustration mounted as signs stated that they were
making changes to their operating procedures and apologised for delays at check-in. Queuing for an hour
to check in was certainly less than satisfactory! Next I breezed through security and checked the board
which said “Proceed directly to gate.” I am so relieved that I gave myself that extra time for the journey!
The flight was pleasant and we touched down in Moscow slightly ahead of time. Immigration seemed
quicker and more efficient than on my previous visits to Russia and my suitcase appeared on the carousel
as I arrived at the belt, what joy! My driver was waiting for me in arrivals, just 2 more people on the taxi
list to come through and then we were on our way to the hotel. Temperatures in Moscow were in the high
20s for the duration of our stay and we were relieved to get into the air conditioned car. Sadly our journey to the airport was not
so smooth as we were involved in an accident, our car braked sharply and we were hit from behind by another car. Happily no-
one was hurt but our driver refused to leave the scene before the police arrived. In the UK it would have been a simple exchange
of details before continuing on our way but it is not unusual in Moscow for those involved in a shunt to insist on police attendance.
We were assured that another car would be sent to collect us (they omitted to say how long it would be). Over an hour later a car
arrived which was able to take us but not our luggage to the hotel, the bags would come later! We were relieved to get off the
highway as the traffic was crazy and we were lucky not to be hit again while waiting for back up transport. We thought we might
have been safer standing on the pavement in the heat, dust and noise but after a couple of motorbikes whizzed past us we
decided we were better off in the car!
We were all very relieved to arrive at the hotel. I was so happy when Esther met me in
reception, steered me through checking in and showed me to my room. I opened the door
and gasped – what a beautiful room with floor to ceiling windows framing a magnificent
view. I was going to be very comfortable here! I was hot, tired and starving, there was no
way I was going to wait for my suitcase to arrive, so after a quick freshen up I went down to
the restaurant in my travelling clothes and ‘filled my boots’! Word had got around about the
accident and I noted that my fellow companions from the car were also eating in their
travelling clothes. So much for the first formal dinner! After dinner my suitcase arrived and
I was able to unpack and have a much needed shower. It was now well past my bed time
and with a sigh I dropped into bed and ‘slept for England’!
Thursday 23 June 2016
Breakfast was taken at a very respectable hour with my fellow HTM judges. Although we had some duties to perform that day,
judging would not commence until Friday. Sadly Olga was not staying at the hotel as she lived in Moscow and found it more
convenient to stay at home with her dogs when not at the venue. The hotel provided a buffet style breakfast which definitely had
something for everyone. Looking around the table at our plates we commented that we had breakfasts of many nations! Esther’s
Dutch choice, Johanna typically Scandinavian, Debra a mixture of countries reflecting her upbringing in the USA and the many
places that she has lived and worked abroad and my own choice, they were all so different.
After breakfast we took a walk along the river to see the local sights and then returned to the hotel to set to work. We decided to
have another chat about the rules and then looked at some videos on the internet to do a little practice judging and discuss our
observations. It was then time to make our way to the venue; we picked up the shuttle bus outside the hotel and fought our way
through the Moscow traffic to The Crocus Expo, International Exhibition Centre. At the hotel I had picked up my pass and
paperwork but there was none for the other judges. We were told that they would be at the venue for collection. We had no
problems going through the bag check at the venue but did have problems at the entry gate – they were happy to let me through
with my pass and Debra who was directly behind me (without a pass) got through too. However, Johanna and Esther were
refused entry without their passes. Thank goodness that Debra, the fluent Russian speaker, had got in behind me as we needed
all her linguistic skills to find out where we might get the passes and navigate our way through the halls to collect them. 45
minutes later we were able to get the rest of our team through the entrance. Lucky that we were there the day before judging
started otherwise the competition would have had a
delayed start the next morning!
We navigated our way around the halls and took a
look at the main arena where the competition was to
take place. We were given a schedule of events by
the organisers which we added to the 2 schedules
that we already had and went to lunch. We now had
3 schedules with 3 different times on each! We

became used to this over the next few days and learned quickly to be flexible with the arrangements. We then took out seats in
the VIP stand to watch the opening ceremony; a fantastic spectacle with dancers and drummers providing great entertainment
along with the speeches. A final chat with the organisers and then the rest of the day was our own. I decided to take the shuttle
bus back to the hotel whilst the other 3 stayed on at the venue for a little retail therapy (I think I already mentioned that I am not a
keen shopper!)
Just 10 minutes waiting in the Moscow heat before the shuttle bus arrived to transport me
back to the hotel for a shower and a little relaxation before dinner and the planned evening
tour of Moscow. It seems that I made the right decision as the others waited over an hour
for the bus which should run every 30 minutes! This was another little anomaly that we
became used to over the next few days! We enjoyed our evening meal and then at 9pm.
climbed aboard the bus for the sightseeing tour which included Moscow University, Red
Square and a popular viewing point over the city which was also a meeting point for
dozens of bikers which in itself was a great spectacle. It was a very enjoyable evening
rounding off our first full day together.
Friday 24 June 2016
Our first work day! We breakfasted in a style to which we were happy to become
accustomed and then set off to the venue to judge the Freestyle Team Competition which had representatives from 7 countries,
Switzerland, France, Italy, Finland, Germany, Sweden and Russia each hoping to carry off the trophy.
The routines were very varied in style and quality. Tiredness and nerves did take their toll on some
of the line-up whilst others shone with joy and confidence in their partnership. Some were new to
this level of competition whilst others were seasoned performers on the international stage. It was
super to see small dogs taking their turn among the medium and giant breeds and really holding
their own. My personal top 4 from the 20 competitors were all very different breeds – Papillion,
Belgium Shepherd Laekenois, Border Collie and Newfoundland. They represented Russia, Italy and
Switzerland. Such varied routines too from chasing annoying butterflies and military training to
becoming lost in a forest and a dance which incorporated incredible distance work.
The very well deserved winners of the Team Trophy were the host country, Team Russia.
Following the presentations the judging party retired for lunch at the venue followed by a chat with
the organisers regarding transport to the venue for the days when the regular judge’s transport was
not running early enough. Esther, Johanna and I then departed to catch the shuttle bus whilst
Debra remained at the show a little longer. Oh that shuttle bus – it did cause some strife! We waited for a long time in the heat
for it to arrive and when it did it sailed straight past us in spite of frantic waving and stopped further up the road. We ran after it
only to find that a group of breed judges had taken every seat but one even though they had only just appeared outside the
venue! I offered the seat to both Johanna and Esther who declined, so I took it and the polite pair had to wait for the next bus in
the hope that it would not be so long. They were able to get onto the next shuttle but Debra had less luck when she emerged
from the show and waited for so long that she opted to get a taxi back to the hotel. Happily her expert Russian came in useful
Red Square

once more and she arrived safely.
We all dressed in our posh frocks as the invitation had requested and dinner was taken in the hotel restaurant. There was a huge
choice of dishes and the wine, vodka and conversation flowed freely. Back in my room I checked through my paperwork for the
next day’s competition, laid out my judging outfit and slid into the luxuriously comfortable bed linen for another good nights sleep.
Saturday 25 June 2016
Saturday dawned as sunny and hot as the previous days and we met once again for breakfast before taking our transport to the
venue to judge the Heelwork to Music Team Competition.
13 competitors from 5 countries were competing, Italy, Finland, Germany, Sweden and Russia. Again the routines were very
varied in style and quality. Tiredness did not seem such an issue as all the dogs appeared to be brimming with energy; however
a few handler nerves were apparent.
Breeds competing were as varied as in the freestyle competition; my top 4 included 2 Belgium Shepherds – the Laekenois from
the previous day and a Malinois, Alaskan Malamute and a Cane Corso. They represented Italy and Russia.
Again their routines were varied; a dance between a gentleman and lady to a French song, A witch who had a big nose and
wished for a smaller one, a dance with the theme of darkness and light being inseparable and that well known and often used
piece of music – singing in the rain. Once again the winners were Team Russia!
That evening we had been invited to eat at a hotel across the city with the competitors. No posh frocks tonight, we were asked to
dress casually, in fact like normal dog people eating out together – Perfect! The evening began with a taxi ride across town with
a driver who was texting the whole time! To make it worse he was using the satnav on his phone for directions and every time he
checked his text the satnav went off screen and he missed several turnings which made the journey that much longer! We were
all very relieved to exit the car in one piece at the hotel.
We entered the dining room to see a huge table laden with a vast selection of starters and
when everyone had arrived we dived in! It was good to sample some real Russian food
which made a change from the international cuisine at our hotel. Advice was given as to
which foods went best with what and the chatter around the table was very cordial. The
main course was a choice of fish or steak. I was glad I opted for the steak when I looked at
Esther’s fish; it was huge, baring its teeth and looking at her in a very odd way! After dinner
there was much merriment as games were played. The first game was a ‘trainer’ directing a
‘human dog’ to carry out a task with just the aid of a clicker. This was followed by ‘name that
tune’ where we had to name a piece of music from just a few notes. I guess the organisers
had blown their budget elsewhere as the prizes were pieces of fruit. I was the proud winner
on an orange!
The final game of the evening was to get back to the hotel in one piece! It was touch and
go…. Go very, very fast! We squeezed into our taxi home which was a very small car (it
might have been a dodgem!), there no air conditioning, so every window was opened fully
and our hair blew about wildly as the boy racer behind the wheel drove with little thought for
his own safety or indeed ours. We were all very relieved to make it back safely!
Sunday 26 June 2016
Another scorching day dawned for the finals. Today the Heelwork to Music and Freestyle Individual Championships were to be
decided. The top 10 competitors in each of the 2 divisions danced again and their 2 scores were added together to give the final
individual results.
It was very interesting to see these routines again, fewer surprises and every detail highly scrutinised.
It is amazing what you see a second time around that you didn’t note on first viewing. Some did better
and some not so well on their second performance which is par for the course in my experience.
First the Freestyle and this time my top 5 included an Australian Shepherd, Newfoundland, Laekenois
and 2 Border Collies. A wonderful routine was performed by Lizette Olausson with her BC Gaston to
Ma Baker by Boney M which I scored highly in all sections and they received my only 10 of the
competition for their musical interpretation.
The winner of the World Freestyle Championships was Yvonne Belin from Switzerland with her
beautiful Border Collie Bitch, Jewel del Mulino Prudenza Brains ‘n Beauty (Alice). They danced to
Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen.

Following a short break we settled down for a second look at the top 10 HTM competitors. Again my top 4 changed from the
previous day. An Australian Shepherd with a super routine in which the handler was scared of dogs popped into my top 4 to join
the Malinois, Alaskan Malamute and Cane Corso bringing the chance of a place for Finland along with the Russian competitors.
The winner of the Heelwork to Music World Championships was Polina Ilina from Russia and her
magnificent Belgium Shepherd Malinois Liniya Gracii Ilim Yan (Ilim).

After the presentations and the Dog Dance closing
ceremony were completed the judges were
presented with gifts from the organisers and teams
and then retired for a late lunch and the final bits of
admin. We were each taken into a small room with a
guard on the door where our expenses were paid.
We were then asked to wait in the VIP area for our
travel slips which gave the time that we would be
collected by our cars the following day for the final
drive to the airport. I don’t think I mentioned the VIP
area previously so here is the insiders view. The VIP
stand was where we could sit and watch all the activity in the main arena on specially
padded seating. Below the stand was an area containing 2 free bars and trays
groaning with a constant supply of beautifully presented tasty treats, both sweet and
savoury. There were tables at the right height for standing and mingling in the very
convivial atmosphere. A TV was positioned in one corner so that it was possible to
keep an eye on what was happening in the Main Arena at all times. It was also
possible to take whatever you wanted up the steps to your seat in the stands. This
had to be done with extra care as one of the steps was slightly higher than all the
others; it caught me out a time or two. We saw one poor chap almost fall his length
as he entered the seating area sending his food and drink flying between the seats!
Finally we departed the building to look for a shuttle bus (oh joy, there was one waiting!) and made our way back to the hotel to
dress up for our final meal together. Two of our party had early flights and so would be leaving before breakfast. Fond farewells
were exchanged at the end of the evening with lots of good wishes for safe journeys home as we made our way back to our
rooms for our last sleep of the trip.
Monday 27 June 2016
I blessed the air conditioning as I saw another hot day welcome me when I opened my curtains before descending in the lift to
breakfast. Debra and I were the only ones from our party remaining; it felt very odd to be at such a depleted table! Debra was
staying on for another week in Moscow and my flight wasn’t until the afternoon, so we breakfasted in a leisurely manner before
saying our goodbyes.
Back in my room I packed my belongings. The organisers, competitors and my fellow judges had all been very generous with
their gifts and I enjoyed the 3D jigsaw puzzle I had working out how to fit them all into my suitcase. It was soon midday and the
car was waiting to take me across Moscow back to the airport. Happily this occurred without incident this time and I was soon
checking my bags in for my flight home.
The journey home could not have gone smoother, from swift check in, to the on time flight, passport check and luggage arrival.
The shuttle bus to the car park arrived within a couple of minutes of my arrival at the bus stop and my car started first time. Even
my journey home on the notorious M25 and M1 was painless.
Of course the best thing about being away is coming home to your loved ones. It was wonderful to see Allan, Erin and Midge
watching for me and welcoming me home. Allan is an absolute star, I couldn’t take these trips without his support and I real ly do
appreciate all that he does to make it possible.
Finally I would like to thank the organisers of the World Dog Show 2016 for all their hard work and magnificent hospitality and my
fellow judges for their support and friendship. I would especially like to thank the competitors who worked so hard to put on a
great show, not only in the training of each dog and handler team but also all the hard work involved in the organisation of the
travel, accommodation, fund raising and all those other items which take so much time. It is a great accolade to represent your
country and they should all be very proud that they created a great line up and brilliant show at the 2016 World Championships.

Do you remember Chris de Jong inviting everyone to take up Cani Cross?
“Fancy a muddy run with your canine companion?” (Summer Newsletter)
Well Helen Dennis and Kara have taken him up on his offer and they ran their first competition at Carnfield Hall, Derbyshire, with
a very respectable 4th place for Chris and 5th place for Helen. I was exhausted just watching them!!!
From Kath Hardman
I’ve been asked to pass on this information:
One of the most popular treats for dogs is peanut butter! Not only is the nutty spread included in many dog treat recipes, it is
oftentimes licked straight off the spoon.
However, pet parents are being cautioned to be vigilant when purchasing jars of peanut butter because of a dangerous ingredient
being included in several brands – Xylitol.
The artificial sweetener is extremely dangerous to dogs and only small amounts can cause severe drops in blood sugar levels
(hypoglycaemia), liver failure and death. One family sadly discovered this recently, when their pet ate sugarless gum.
According to “Preventative Vet”, they recently discovered several brands making sugar-free peanut butter but include xylitol as an
additive. The website indicated that “Nuts ’N More” and Krush Nutrition’s “Nutty By Nature” both have peanut butter products that
contain the canine-unfriendly additive and that there are potentially other brands that have sugar-free peanut butter that contain
xylitol.
Please read the ingredients label on peanut butter to ensure that xylitol is not one of them!
Ingesting just small amounts of xylitol can seriously harm a dog. As little as 0.1 gram (g) of xylitol per kilogram (kg) of body
weight (0.1 g/kg) can cause a rapid drop in a dog’s blood sugar with potentially fatal consequences.

Iris Maxfield has had a lovely idea “Just a thought for the news letters, I know you are open to suggestions for content.” (yes please, always. Ed.) “Lots of pups in the HTM world this year Nicci, Kath, Sheila, Cathrine, Annette and others, how about a "pup to a year page" that those who want to could do a photo and short update/progress/pups training???? each news letter until they reach 11?12? months old as some drop out others will move in. Not every one is on Facebook to see the pictures or hear what is going on or who has a pup, and its lovely to follow them through to the shows. Just a thought” Ed. It is a lovely thought and so far two people have started with it, I am sure we all will look forward to following these puppies through their first year. And maybe there will be some more in the next Newsletter?
Pup To A Year Page

Born March 27th 2016 (Easter Sunday)
Sire: Wizaland Well Connected.
Dam : Bayshores British Connection Avatar
Robson came home to Matlock on the 28th May.
The only time he objected to the journey was when
he could not look out of the window.
So far his major achievements are;
Dragging a bag of compost from behind the shed
on to the patio – and then spreading the joy;
Mud-wrestling with Scully at Anglesey;
Growing!!!!!!!
He’s in there somewhere First met on a very wet and cold Saturday in April.

I would be happy to join in with this with my new
baby if you would like
Hillstorm Jessies Charmer, pet name Bear, born
4/7/16
Photo attached was taken on the day I went to
choose from the litter.
I'm due to collect him on Saturday 27th August.
His first year may not be very interesting for
readers, being a large breed, slower developing
and with known health problems, my first priority
is to raise a healthy, fit and happy dog, who I
hope will have a long and active life. Whether
we ever compete in any discipline will depend on
how he grows up, but he does have some
working trials dogs in his ancestry.
I can however almost guarantee some very cute 'ear' photos.
And, welcome to Beeley Hardman!
Born 11/8/16
Beeley is a Hungarian Pumi (just look at those
ears!)
The name Beeley is from a village in Derbyshire
and follows the theme of two of Kath’s dogs,
Amber and Denby.
