DIRECTOR ’S NOTES

In a December of 1946 New York Times review of the film, It’s a Wonderful Life, Bosley Crowther wrote that the movie’s weakness was in its sentimentality and the illusion it creates of real life. “Mr. Capra’s nice people are charming,” wrote Crowther, “his small town is a quite beguiling place and his pattern for solving problems is most optimistic and facile. But somehow they all resemble theatrical attitudes rather than average realities.”

Well, then how appropriate that we should be staging the theatrical version of this movie that in 1990 was deemed “culturally, historically, and aesthetically sig-nificant” by the United Sates Library of Congress. (Take that, Mr. Crowther!)

Of course I’m being flippant regarding that 1946 review, and I even understand why other similar criticisms of the Frank Capra classic exist. But who among us hasn’t needed to be reminded of the effect we have on those around us and the world beyond? We sometimes examine where we are and find it not to be living up to the youthful dreams of where we thought we’d be. We can mistakenly judge our lives and our very selves a failure for not achieving those dreams, forgetting the importance of what we have done and who we’ve helped along the way.

In the spirit of this story, I asked the cast to start each rehearsal with someone sharing a personal “Wonderful Life” moment, to tell the rest of us something about their lives that reminds them how valuable they are and how good life really is. There were many.

May you be reminded of how much you mean to so many people and the good effects you have had on the world around you.

Merry Christmas!Mark Salentine

Jennifer Allen (Stage Manager)Jennifer Allen loves Christmas and is thrilled to work on this project with old friends and new faces. Jennifer admits

to having a pretty wonderful life and is currently planning a wedding to a pretty wonderful guy, Chris, whom she can’t wait to wed next July. As President of the Board of Directors, Jennifer encourages everyone to see what a wonderful life they have and rally behind the “George Baileys” in their life and community.

J.W. Anderson (Mr. Gower)J.W. vividly recalls seeing IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE on the Channel 6 late, late show almost fifty years ago. He thinks

it was the first time he ever shed a tear (just a little one!) watching a film. When he heard they were doing the show here, he just hoped he could get a part in it. This is his third show at Sunset. Thanks, Mark!

Randall Anderson (George Bailey)A founding member of Wisconsin Hybrid Theatre, Randall is delighted to return to Sunset. Audiences may remember

him from RUMORS, AUNTIE MAME, and A FEW GOOD MEN. Randall is thrilled to work once more with all the talented artists at Sunset, and urges everyone to be mindful of the lives we unknowingly touch.

Ruth Arnell (Mary Hatch/Bailey)Ruth just couldn’t pass up a chance to act with Randall Anderson and is particularly delighted to work with him in

such a fun Christmas classic! Previous roles include Meg Magrath in CRIMES OF THE HEART, Tracy Lord in THE PHILADELPHIA STORY, Brooke Ashton in NOISES OFF, and The Girl in THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH. She dedicates this performance to her Uncle Steve. Merry Christmas, Unk.

Jacob Badovski (Young George)Jacob is a 10-year-old fifth-grader at Elm Creative Arts School (MPS). He is making his Sunset debut, having previously

performed as Young Count in First Stage’s production of THIEF LORD, Tiny Tim in Milwaukee Repertory Theatre’s CHRISTMAS CAROL, Charlie Bucket in Modjeska Youth Theatre’s WILLY WONKA, and several other roles in Modjeska productions. He is thrilled to be a part of this production.

William Badovski (Newspaper Boy)William is an eighth-grader attending Roosevelt Middle School of the Arts (MPS), where he has an opportunity

to study drama and stage crew. Will is excited to be debuting at Sunset, having performed as Grandpa Joe in RMSA’s dinner theatre production of CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY; Pickpocket in Falls Patio Players production of OLIVER; James in Modjeska Youth Theatre’s production of WILLY WONKA, and several other roles in Modjeska productions.

Evelyn Barta (ZuZu Bailey)Evelyn is excited to be making her stage debut at Sunset Playhouse. A second grader at the Milwaukee

Spanish Immersion School, Evelyn has taken classes with Milwaukee’s First Stage Children’s Theatre and

Sunset Playhouse. She is thrilled IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE is her first show as it is a favorite of her family.

Beth Bland (Co-Props Mistress)This is Beth’s fourth show with Sunset. She also works props and running crew with the West Allis Players, and is a

member of their Board.

Erin Brophy (Stage Manager) This is Erin’s first experience working at Sunset, but not her first venture into the world of theatre. Erin is in the process

of completing her BFA in Theater Studies and hopes to graduate from Carroll University in 2011. Erin wishes to thank the cast and crew for making “Working for Wings” such an enjoyable first experience!

Elliott Brotherhood (Newspaper Boy)Elliott is a homeschooled fifth grader and is delighted to be making his Sunset Playhouse debut.

He has previously performed for First Stage Children’s Theatre as an Angel in THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER, and is scheduled to appear in this year’s production of THE HUNDRED DRESSES. He has also appeared in the Wauwatosa Recreation Department’s Production of KING MIDAS. Elliott would like to thank Mark Salentine for believing in him. Happy Holidays!

John Brotherhood (Pete Bailey)John is a homeschooled sixth grader and is pleased to be making his debut with the Sunset Playhouse.

John has previously performed for First Stage Children’s Theatre where his roles have included Leroy Herdman in THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER, John in GOSSAMER, and Theo in TWELVE DAYS, A MILWAUKEE CHRISTMAS. John is happy to be a part of this production and would like to thank Mark Salentine for making this opportunity possible.

Luke Brotherhood (Tommy Bailey)Luke is a homeschooled third grader and is excited to be making his Sunset Playhouse debut with his

brothers. Luke has also performed for First Stage Children’s Theatre as an Angel in THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER. Luke would like to thank Mark Salentine and everyone at the Sunset Playhouse for the wonderful journey. Enjoy the show!

Don Callan (Uncle Billy)This is Don’s first appearance on the Sunset stage. Previously, Don has performed at Lake Country Playhouse

in Hartland, Theatre On Main in Oconomowoc and in Mukwonago Village Players productions. Some memorable roles include Juror #4 in TWELVE ANGRY MEN, Reverend Wooley in LEADING LADIES, and Saunders in LEND ME A TENOR. He would like to thank all those who support his passion for theatre, especially his wife, Diane. Enjoy this holiday favorite!

he freelanced in Chicago for such companies as Circle Theatre of Forest Park, Pendulum Theatre, and Bowen

Park Theatre and Opera. Before that, he earned his Master’s degree at San Diego State University and worked for the Tony Award-winning La Jolla Playhouse. Originally from Oklahoma, Michael earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma. In spring 2008, he briefly returned to educational theatre with a stint as Guest Artist and Instructor for North Dakota State University. He would like to extend an invitation to anyone interested in the technical aspects of theatre (and since you have read this far, there must be some interest) to give us a call at (262) 782-4431, ext. 235. We’re already working on the next show, so come be a part of what you see.

Jim Donaldson (Mr. Carter)Jim Donaldson is quite pleased to again be working with Mark Salentine and the Sunset Playhouse. He is

thankful to be working with such a fun, energetic cast as this one, and hopes his future experiences with Sunset will be just as exciting.

Isabelle Hughes (Janie Bailey)Isabelle is 11 years old and attends St. Robert’s School. She is so excited to be playing the part of Janie. This

is her first experience with Sunset Playhouse, and she loves it! Theatre is a huge part of Isabelle’s life. Her acting experience includes several shows at the Children’s Theatre of Wauwatosa including SLEEPING BEAUTY and KING MIDAS AND THE GOLDEN TOUCH. She has also performed at Temkin-Children’s Playhouse in COMPOSE YOURSELF, I NEVER SAW ANOTHER BUTTERFLY, and ALICE IN WONDERLAND JR.

Scott Jaeger (Mr. Welch)Scott has most recently appeared at the Sunset as the King in THE UNDERPANTS. His previous credits

include…. ah… nothing. Seriously, he had such a great time in THE UNDERPANTS that he just had to have another swing at the ball. He gives thanks to Mark and the rest of the cast for making him feel so welcome.

Karen Kegel (Co-Props Mistress)This time of year it’s tradition to sit down and watch It’s a Wonderful Life on TV, so it’s a pleasure to see it come to the

stage at the Sunset Playhouse again. Karen has been involved with props work for various shows, and thinks it’s always fun to meet new actors and see returning faces. A big thanks to Beth and Mark for helping me out. Merry Christmas to one and all.

Stuart Kendall (Mr. Potter)Stuart made his first stage appearance at Sunset in the comedy MARY, MARY in 1965. He has appeared in several mystery

thrillers at Sunset including ANGEL STREET, DIAL ‘M’ FOR MURDER, SLEUTH, and DEATHTRAP. He loves the works of playwrights Kaufman and Hart, having played Grandpa in Sunset’s YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU and Sheridan Whiteside in Sunset’s THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER.

Tim Kietzman (Mr. Martini)Tim loves the delicious irony of playing the part of his favorite adult beverage. A returning actor to the Sunset

stage, he has also appeared in area productions of ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD, SLEUTH, and ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST and directed productions of THE DINING ROOM, OLIVER!, and OUR TOWN. As a tribute to this holiday classic he’d just like to say ‘Get us! We’re givin’ out wings!’

Ila Koch (Janie Bailey)Ila Koch is 10-years old and is in the fourth Grade. She is thrilled to be in her first production at the Sunset Playhouse.

In addition to acting, Ila enjoys singing, dancing and playing the piano.

Audrey Kolbeck (Mrs. Thompson)Aubrey Kolbeck is a sophomore at UWWC majoring in Theatre and Photography. She’s been performing

ever since she could walk and making people laugh since she could talk. Her performing career started at the age of 2 with a dance routine to “I’m a Little Tea Pot” and the rest has been history. This is Audrey’s second of what she hopes to be many productions, as well as her first time working with Mark Salentine and Sunset Playhouse. She would like to thank her mom for everything she’s done and continues to do for her throughout her life.

Ellen Kozak (Costume Designer)Ellen is glad to be back at Sunset and part of this production of IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE. Ellen’s design

work has taken her from Adam & Eve to speculative visions of the future. She has designed for many theatre companies across the nation, including the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, GeVa Theatre in Rochester New York, The

Intiman in Seattle and Center Stage in Baltimore. She has faced the challenge of doing shows on cruise ships and in other countries. Other design projects were for films, videos, conventions, industrials, mascots, and photography sessions. You can see more of her work in the upcoming Pioneers of Television programs on PBS. Variety is the spice of life, and theatre is certainly full of variety.

Marge Kurtz (Mother Bailey)After more than a year away, Marge is thrilled to be back at Sunset working with this fine cast in a great Christmas

classic after appearances here as Doris in DAMN YANKEES and Norah in AUNTIE MAME. Marge thanks her family for their support in her acting endeavor!

Anthony Mackie (Hair Stylist/Wig Master)A New York native, Anthony began his stage acting career at age five and his musical career

at seven. At 15, he was accepted to the Stone Cameren, Ruth Page Ballet Company in Chicago. Two years later he returned to New York where he joined a ballet company and took up cosmetology. Due to a knee injury and surgery, Anthony started a new career in Milwaukee as a hair stylist and wigist for most of the theatres in the region. He has also been a director and choreographer.

Spence Mather (Ernie the Mailman)Fresh off of his recent, if not so stellar, showing on “Dancing with the Stars”, (not as successful as his run

on “Teen Jeopardy” in 2007), Spencer will always cherish performing the jitterbug to Ave Maria. Contrary to rumors, he is extremely proud of his stint as the body-double for Arnold

Schwarzenegger in the mid-80’s, as well as his voiceover work as all of the Smurfs. Spencer would like to thank all of you for supporting Sunset Playhouse and wishes you the very best of the season!

Allyson Nemec (Mrs. Martini)Though involved in theatre for many years, Allyson is thrilled to be making her on-stage debut. She

has been active as a board member, volunteer, and architect of several theatre venues in the Milwaukee area. Stepping from behind the curtain onto the stage is an exciting change. She thanks Mark Salentine and Sunset for the opportunity and thanks her children, Will and Jake Badovski, for the inspiration.

Chip O’Brien (Newspaper Boy)A twelve year old seventh grader at Saint Joseph School in Wauwatosa, Chip is excited to return to the

Sunset Playhouse Stage for this amazing, classic show! Previously, he was seen in Sunset’s DAMN YANKEES. Chip has also appeared in two seasons of A CHRISTMAS CAROL and in the THE VOYSEY INHERITANCE, both productions of the Milwaukee Repertory Theater. Chip wishes for everyone to carry on the Christmas spirit throughout the year.

Audrey O’Neil (Janie Bailey)Audrey can’t believe her first acting experience is an adaptation of her father’s favorite movie. A strong

turn as a Polish immigrant with a new baby in a school play gave her the confidence to audition with Sunset Playhouse. In her increasingly rare

spare time, Audrey enjoys gymnastics, cheerleading, producing and directing in-house variety shows, horseback riding, and creative writing. She also loves fine food and hopes to go to Sanford one day.

Katherine Rasch (Miss Andrews)Katherine (KC) is making her Sunset debut and couldn’t be happier! She is currently a Junior at Milwaukee High

School of the Arts, where she is a Level 3 Production Major. She recently performed in ANNIE with Shorewood Players Theatre and is a proud member of First Stage Theatre Academy’s Young Company. She hopes to have the opportunity to perform with the Sunset again in the future!

Stefan Romero (Young George)Stefan is an 8th grader at Brookfield Academy. For 7 years he has been acting at multiple theatres including First Stage,

Skylight Opera Theatre, Fireside Dinner Theatre, and the Brookfield Academy musicals. Stefan’s biggest thrill, however, came from being cast as a host on an episode of the TV series “Into The Outdoors.” I look forward to being in my second production at Sunset Playhouse!

Mark Salentine (Artistic Director, Director)Mark is in his eighth season at Sunset with over 50 varying productions since first coming in as a

guest director in the fall of 2003. Thanks go to a talented and dedicated cast and crew for their work on this show. Holding a Bachelor’s in theatre from Carroll College, Mark has been involved as an actor, director, writer, producer, designer, or technician in now over 200 shows in theatres throughout the United States. He also ventures into the film and commercial

side of acting, but his best production will always be a boy named Timothy, reminding Mark of his wonderful life. Speaking of that, “Moo.”

Mike Schmidt (Mr. Potter’s Goon)Mike is delighted to be a part of this production with Sunset, his second venture in his new hobby. Earlier this

year, he played the Constable in OUR TOWN with the Shorewood Players. He finds it to be all sorts of fun stepping into character and hanging out with the more seasoned actors. He also enjoys his day job at the Milwaukee High School of the Arts where he is a math teacher.

Stephanie Seymour (Directing Intern)Stephanie wishes to thank Mark for her return to Sunset with IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE. This is her

second role behind the scenes. She previously co-directed HARRY POTTER AND THE MAGIC OF THE 4-LEAF CLOVER. Steph is a sophomore at Eisenhower and enjoys acting, violin, and PHYSICS!

DJ Slater (Harry Bailey)A Milwaukee native, DJ has been acting since middle school. After a seven-year hiatus from 2002-2008, Slater returned to acting

in Wausau in three community theatre productions, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, FUNNY GIRL, and PICNIC. DJ is excited and grateful to be a part of his first Sunset production. He also appreciates his family, Carol, and long walks on the beach.

Mara Steven (Directing Intern)A senior at Brookfield Academy, Mara is excited to be a part of her first production at Sunset Playhouse.

SUNDAY FOR CREVE COUER and Hecuba in HECUBA. This is Sarah’s first onstage appearance at Sunset Playhouse. She would like to thank Michelle and the rest of the production staff and volunteers for their hard work and support.

John Van Gilder (Bert the Policeman)John is thrilled to be back in front of an audience for the third time here at Sunset, after previous

appearances in FAME! and ARTHUR, THE BOY WHO WOULD BE KING. a wonderful director, and tireless crew, he joins a cast of dozens in a wonderful Christmas tradition. Marty Wallner (Lighting Designer)Marty has spent 36 wonderful years volunteering at Sunset. He always enjoys working with Mark Salentine and

Michael Desper. Not only are they fascinating to watch as they develop a show, but along with a bevy of fantastic volunteers, they install the lighting design on stage. You should come volunteer with all of them.’

Richard Wenzel (Clarence Odbody)This is the fifth production at Sunset Playhouse for Richard. During the 1980’s, he appeared in THE LAST MEETING OF THE

KNIGHTS OF THE WHITE MAGNOLIA as Olin Potts, STALAG 17 as Harry Shapiro, ON GOLDEN POND as Charlie and THE

MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER as Banjo. He is pleased to return to the Sunset stage after a 25-year absence.

Barb Wilk (Aunt Tilly)Barb thanks Sunset Playhouse for opening up a new chapter in her life. After entertaining people as a clown for eight years, this stage

debut as an actor is extremely exciting and she is grateful for the opportunity. She wants to thank all her family and friends for the support they have given her. She looks forward to new adventures in the theatre. Enjoy life!

UPCOMING SHOWS

JINGLE JIVE, a Musical Mainstage ProductionHappy Chrisnukwanzekah to all! We’re going to stand tradition on its head and welcome the holidays with a merry little attitude. No Silent Night to-night. Instead, we’ll be rockin’ and groovin’ and laughin’ at the whole holiday hullabaloooooo. Slightly skewed, mostly irreverent, we’ll be more like, “Hark, can Harold Angel sing!” Join us for a little pre-holiday respite from what can be a stressful, crazy-making time of year.December 13- 14, 31, 2010

WHAT ABOUT LUV?Comic zingers and a trio of singers make this witty musical about the perils of modern love a lyrical winner. Old school chums Milt and Harry bump into each other on the Brooklyn Bridge one day. Milt has grown weary of married life while Harry admits times have been so tough that he’s going to jump off the bridge and end it all. When Milt’s wife Ellen shows up, a reversal of fortunes and partners happens with madcap musical results.Jan 13-Feb 6, 2011

CAPS FOR SALE, a bug in a rug productionAdapted from the classic tale by Esphyr Slobodkina, our story goes behind the scenes to weave the tale of a cap peddler’s life, some monkeys, and their monkey business with a lesson in perseverance.Jan 27-29, 2011
