Zoya Akhtar's "Gully Boy",featuring Ranveer Singh as anaspiring rapper, has been select-ed as India's official entry in theInternational Feature Film cate-gory at the Oscars, the FilmFederation of India (FFI)announced today.

The movie, which releasedcommercially across the countryon February 14, also featuresAlia Bhatt, Vijay Raaz, KalkiKoechlin, Siddhant Chaturvedi,Vijay Varma and AmrutaSubhash.

Gully Boy", produced byRitesh Sidhwani and FarhanAkhtar, features Ranveer as anup-and-coming rapper who setsout to achieve his dream byrhyming about his life on theMumbai streets.

"India's official entry forOscars this year is 'Gully Boy'.There were 27 films in the run-ning this year but it was anunanimous decision to select'Gully Boy'," FFI secretary gen-eral Supran Sen said.

Celebrated actor-filmmakerAparna Sen was the head of thejury for this year's selectioncommittee.

"The energy of the film wasinfectious. It will speak to theaudience," Aparna said on"Gully Boy" being the final pickof the jury.

FFI president FirdausulHasan said the screeningprocess for the Oscar selectionstarted on Monday and ended onSaturday.

He also revealed that apartfrom "Gully Boy", otherBollywood films competing forthe Oscar entry were "BadhaaiHo", "Andhadhun", "Article15", "Uri: The Surgical Strike",

"Badla", "Kesari" and "TheTashkent Files".

Farhan took to Twitter tocongratulate the team behind thefilm, which was one of the mostcritically-acclaimed Hindimovies of 2019.

Kalki also expressed herexcitement on the movie's Oscarselection.

"Woweeeeeeeee! That is justthe best Saturday eveningnews!" she tweeted.

Amruta, who played

Murad's (Ranveer's character inthe film) mother Razia Ahmed,said she is overwhelmed.

"My first film 'Shwaas' wasalso India's entry to the Oscarand now 'Gully Boy'. I'm sooverwhelmed. The film is nearto my heart. I am thrilled, happyand excited.

"The subject, the making ofthe films is so universal. I amsure it will resonate and touchthe hearts of everyone. It is greatthat this film will be represent-ing us," Amruta said.

Writer Reema Kagti said thatthe team is "thrilled" with theselection.

Varma, whose portrayal ofperceptive and enterprisingMoeen in the film earned himcritical acclaim, said gettingselected for the AcademyAwards is a big deal.(PTI)
