First Sunday of Advent December 2, 2018
1st Sunday of Advent
From Father Phil
1st Sunday of Advent
There is something about Advent that is meant to disturb
us. Going from green vestments to purple is a dramatic
change. The color of Advent reminds us that a new Church
year has started and that it is not business as usual. The
“Advent business” of the pre-Christmas season is difficult to
recognize, as decorated trees appear and parties abound.
The Church in her wisdom asks that we prepare for some-
thing that is to come. The Church asks us to wait, and who
on earth likes waiting! That is exactly what Advent
is, waiting for Christmas.
Advent should be a waiting with expectancy, a waiting simi-
lar to Mary’s was as she prepared for Jesus’ birth. The life of
this young girl in Nazareth was certainly disturbed by the
angel’s visitation, yet Mary replied unhesitatingly, “May it
be done to me according to your word.”
Our response to something new may be disturbing, and so
often brings resistance. “Why can’t we do what we always
do? Why do we have to change?” This approach to life is one
that seeks comfort and familiarity, while moving from one’s
comfort zone can be frightening, but it can lead to growth.
Geoffrey Preston OP wrote in his book Hallowing the
Time that as Christians “We are not left undisturbed long.
We are always being asked to shift ourselves, always being
prodded, pushed or pulled.”
I hope and pray that we learn to see change as an invitation
to live more fully under God’s grace, to refresh where we
might have grown stale.
Happy Advent,
Fr. Phil Lloyd

“INSTRUMENTS OF GOD’S MERCY”
2018 DIOCESAN SERVICES FUND
“Christ has no body on earth but yours, no feet but yours. Yours are the
eyes through which Christ’s compassion for the world is to look out; yours are the feet with which He is to go about doing good; and yours
are the hands with which He is to bless us now. ”
― St. Teresa of Avila
Thank you for answering the call to ex-
press God's love and compassion
through your commitment to this year's
Diocesan Services Fund (DSF). Catho-
lics throughout our archdiocesan com-
munity are uniting in faith, sharing
their blessings, and giving gifts in
Christ's name. If you have not yet re-
sponded, we urge you to consider offer-
ing your commitment at this time; each
gift helps. There are thirty generous
donors that have pledged and are still
making payments towards our goal.
Please complete your pledge by Decem-
ber 31, 2018. Thank you again for your
support. If you prefer to donate online,
visit www.archgh.org/dsf.
All are invited to join us for the
weekly Adult Education Group
called “Sunday by Sunday.”
We meet weekly after 10:00 am
Mass from 11:15 a.m.- 12:15 p.m.
on the second floor of the gym.
This is a wonderful opportunity
for fellowship, faith sharing and
reflecting on
the Sunday readings.
