TruthinLabelingSeveralyearsago,WildPlanetreceivedcertificationfromourmanufacturersstatingthatourcanliningswereBPA-free,andthereforewestatedsoonourproductlabels.Shortlythereafter,weelectedtosubjectthesenewlyformulatedcanstothirdpartytesting;justtobesureourclaimwasvalid.AsaresultofthistestingwithmoresensitiveequipmentabletodetectsmalleramountsofBPA,wediscoveredtraceamountsofBPA,amountsthatafewyearsagowouldnothavebeendetectableatall.Nevertheless,wenolongerfeltcomfortablemakingtheclaim:“BPA-free.”Wewishedtomakeamoreaccurateclaimthatistruthfulintheabsolutesense.Withthatweadjustedourclaimto“NoBPAusedincanlining.”However,duetotherecentpassageoflegislationapplyingCaliforniaProp65provisionstoBisphenolA,includingazerotoleranceforthedetectionofANYBPAinacan,wehaveelectedtoremovethestatement,“NoBPAusedincanlining,”fromallofourproductstobeabsolutelycompliantwiththisnewruling.WildPlanetBPATestingAftermuchresearchandtestingofactualcanliningmaterialswehavefoundsupplierswhosecanliningstestat0.2PPMorless,wellbelowtheFDA-approveddetectionlevelof1PPM.ThesemanufacturersdonotuseBPAintheformulationofthecanorlidlinings.Theystatethattheirliningformulationis“BPA-NI”(NotIntentionallyadded).SinceBPAisachemicalthatispresentinmanymanufacturingsettings,itispossiblethatsomeBPAispresentinanyfoodproduct.Othercanscarryinga“BPA-free”claimdonotcontainlessBPA,butaremakingaclaimthatmaynotbeentirelyaccurateordefensible.Thirdpartytestingofanyso-called“BPA-free”canswouldlikelyresultinthedetectionofBPA,which,byCalifornialaw,isenoughtobeinviolationoftheCaliforniaProp65legislation.WildPlanetcontinuestopackthemajorityofourproductsincansthatdonothavetheintentionaladditionofBPAandwillcontinueourtestingprotocoltoensurethatanyBPAthatdoesfinditswayintoourcansisoftheabsoluteminimallydetectablequantity.Unfortunately,environmentalBPAiscompletelyoutofourcontrolandwearenotawareofanyfoodgradecanmanufacturerintheworldthatcanmeettherequirementtoaccuratelyclaimaBPA-freecan.InSummary…WetakeseriouslytheneedtothoroughlyvetfoodsafetyissuessuchasBPA.Wesensethesameresponsibilityofsafeproductproductionforourcustomersaswedoforourownfamilieswhoalsoconsumeourproducts.
