Ryan Smith, Bicester Technology Studio (BTS)
alumnus and current apprentice for Thames Valley Police
Ryan, who joined BTS in Year 12, is now working as an Application Support Analyst at Thames
Valley Police after successfully securing his full-time apprenticeship.
Ryan said: “I prefer to learn while working on the job as it allows me to put what I have learnt into practice. I took a liking to two
posts within the Police and the ethics behind working in the public sector. After being shortlisted, I went on to interview with a panel and,
the next day, found out my contract was being sent in the post!”
“I feel that BTS definitely helped me to secure this opportunity. The school itself made me a more confident
individual and I now believe that I can achieve anything. This is no doubt down to the exposure
we had to many external companies/partners. You are pushed outside of your comfort
zone, and this is what helped me exceed my predicted grade.”

ExperienceYear 11 and 12 students do weekly work experience with local employers. This gives students a unique insight into the world of work and encourages them to consider their next steps.
We have sought out employer partners who bring a host of opportunities for ongoing work placement and career insight.
Our sixth formers can follow an EPQ on a subject that they are interested in. This could be a dissertation or a design project.
These have included historical, political and architectural essays as well as making drones, remote controlled cars and surrealist art.
We know that we excel when we challenge ourselves and Bicester Technology Studio provides a supportive environment to encourage, build resilience, drive us forward, continually nudging our comfort zones.
Our daughter has spent two years at Bicester Technology Studio and the whole experience has been incredibly positive. The staff and pastoral care have been so dedicated and supportive. Her past experiences at secondary were not positive but the whole ethos at this school have been a completely refreshing approach. Our daughter has thrived in this environment and is off to University in September. We are very grateful to the school and all the staff. It is with sadness she leaves but with the tools that will equip her for the next stage in her life. Parent
“I’ve made so many new friends, the teachers are brilliant and I wake up every day looking forward to going to school. Ella-Jade Holding, Year 11
We encourage all students to follow a healthy and active lifestyle; including eating a balanced and nutritious diet, regular exercise and maintaining positive relationships.
Our students will consider topical issues in Morning Literacy; combining political, social and religious aspects, from moral dilemmas to an appreciation and understanding of the political establishment.

CASE STUDY
Year 11 student, Phoebe, has secured a highly sought-after
apprenticeship with UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) in the Science and
Technology Facilities Council (STFC).
Phoebe discovered the opportunity at an apprenticeship open evening at RAL and sent in an application online.
She had previously visited the Rutherford Appleton Laboratories on a number of occasions for various Science enrichment events during her
time at BTS.
Phoebe said: “I have always wanted to get an apprenticeship because when you start to work, you are open to making mistakes which enables you to learn more effectively. My
confidence since joining BTS has improved significantly, which has allowed me to feel much more comfortable speaking to new people.”
Former Year 13 student, Emily Santos secured an apprenticeship at leading manufacturer, Zeta Specialist Lighting, after embarking on a work placement with them in Year 12.
She said: “At the beginning of the year, we were given an insight into each of the partners the school worked with and Zeta appealed to me because it’s a fairly small business and I
wanted to be able to experience all of the different areas and for it to be hands on.”
Soon, Emily’s one day a week placement became two, and she began taking on additional responsibilities, which in turn led to her securing an apprenticeship
with them in 2018.
Emily said: “Bicester Technology Studio is special. They open doors to such great real-world work placements and
that’s what makes them so different. You don’t just sit in a classroom all day. Here
you learn how a business runs and get to see it in practice.”
