Principal’s Report Dear Parents,
The K, 1, 2 excursion to Healesville was a great success from all reports despite the weather

the great learning experience.

Children have been placed into selected sports. Please make sure permission notes are returned by this
Wednesday 14th September.
We anticipate NAPLAN reports, for Years 3 and 5 will be available and sent home by the end of this
week.
The school P & C meets here at school tonight at 7.30pm in the Library. Everyone is welcome to
participate and contribute.
Our Swimming Schemes will take place in weeks 2 and 3 of next Term. Notes have been sent home
today. All Kinder and Year 1 children will be involved in one scheme and non-swimmers in Years 2 to
6 have been targeted. If your child cannot confidently swim 25m and did not receive a note, please see
the office. It is important that you return permission notes by the due dates as there is a lot of planning
required prior to the commencement of the schemes.

This week in the Kitchen Garden TOCUMWAL FARMERS’ MARKET This Saturday, 17th September, we will be having another Barooga Public School Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program stall at the Tocumwal Farmers’ Market. Previous stalls have been very successful thanks to the assistance of several students and families who donated good quality produce for us to sell. Running a stall provides an excellent opportunity for our students to sell homemade and home grown goods to members of the general public. This allows them to develop confidence and communication skills, as well as practising their maths skills as they sell the goods. The students will be supervised by staff members during the market. Any children who would like to assist at the market needs to complete the slip below and return it to me as soon as possible, so that final arrangements can be made. Children need only assist for an hour if they wish (you can relax and shop whilst they work) or they can stay for the morning. Limited opportunities exist for some students to travel from Barooga to Tocumwal with the teachers but these students would need to stay until we return at about 1 pm. Due to the high demand for places at previous markets, we will give places to the first eight students to return their notes this week. Limited places still exist. We would also like to ask for donations of homemade and grown goods to sell. These can be dropped off at school on Friday 16th September or taken to the market on the day. Please do not include anything that requires a lot of refrigeration, such as cream, and please include the ingredients on the packaging, so that customers can identify possible allergens.
KITCHEN MENU This week’s menu features an unusual vegetable the children have been growing to perfection in the garden, purple kohl rabi. Kohl rabi is related to cabbage and turnips. The swollen stem can be eaten both raw and cooked. The children will use it to make a coleslaw and pakora, spicy Indian fritters. They are also making a warm potato, asparagus and orange salad and buttered beetroot. For a sweet treat they will make a chocolate pineapple slice with cheesecake cream. Thanks to Moira Food Share for donating the chocolate biscuit crumbs and pineapple.
BOOSEY CREEK CHEESE WORKSHOPS On Monday, 19th September, we are lucky to have Margie from our local cheese makers, Boosey Creek Cheese, visiting our school to present a series of workshops with the children in Years 3 – 6. Margie will show the children how to make a range of cheeses. The children will also get to make their own simple cheese and taste the range of cheeses made by Boosey Creek Cheese. Year 6 will attend the workshop in the kitchen at 9:30, Year 3/4 will have their turn at 11:25 and Year 4/5 will attend the workshop at 1:45. The children will need to bring their own lunch on this day. No cooking lessons will occur on Tuesday as the children are attending the workshop in lieu of their weekly lesson.

This week in the Kitchen Garden CAN YOU HELP? We are in need of the following items:
A sheet of concrete reinforcing mesh approximately 1m X 5m to use to make another arch in the garden.
Sparkly crystals or anything fairy-like that we could hang in the branches of the camphor laurel tree to add to our fantasy play area.
Garden gnomes or fairy ornaments.
Old bike wheels.
Large ceramic or concrete pots. It does not matter if they have chips etc.
Old wheelbarrows or interesting containers to use as planters in the garden.
A soil sifter.
Plastic garbage bin.
Timber slats, such as those in a louvre door, to use as plant identification labels. If anyone is able to assist us we would be most grateful.
