the go-ahead to back his conviction that the
top-priced colt could develop into a big money
spinner early next year.
“I saw him at Rothwell about two months
ago and I loved him then and he’s just improved
from then on,” O’Brien said from the Gold Coast
yesterday.
Peter O’Brien, with the backing
of Segenhoe Stud owner Kevin
Maloney, put his stamp on day
one of the Magic Millions National
Weanling Sale with the purchase of a $410,000
Zoustar (Northern Meteor) colt as buyers
zeroed in on foals deemed to be of the highest
quality.
The session-topping son of Zoustar was one
of 11 weanlings to make $100,000 or more at the
Gold Coast yesterday in a shortened session
which started in subdued fashion before some
banner colts and well-bred fillies took centre
stage to help improve the figures and, more
importantly, push the clearance rate to an
acceptable 71 per cent.

“We had a meeting about him this
morning and, speaking to Kevin Maloney, I said, ‘he’s the one for me at
the sale’.
“He obviously cost a little bit more (than I expected) because I thought
he’d be $350,000-ish but you’ve got to buy the one you want.
“He’s a beautiful horse by a stallion we love and we’ll bring him back
here next year and hopefully double (our money).”
Pinhooking is a speculator’s market at the best of times - let alone
during a pandemic that has caused economic chaos around the world -
but O’Brien had confidence in the colt and past sale ring glory to justify
the optimism.
“We have had a lot of luck buying weanlings and pinhooking them,”
he said.
“He comes from a great farm. Scotty (Irwin) does a great job and we’re
delighted to get him back to the farm.
“He’s all there now - he’s a very mature horse, very correct and I’ve just
got to try and make sure nothing goes wrong.”
One of nine weanlings sold by day one’s leading vendor Rothwell Park,
the Lot 879-catalogued Zoustar colt is the second foal out of the stakes-
placed Miss Husson (Husson) who was bought by Yulong for $360,000
during the broodmare sale earlier this week.
Miss Husson, who is from the same family as Group 1 winners
Outback Prince (Desert Prince) and Hotel Grand (Grand Lodge), was
sold by Rothwell Park in foal to
Arrowfield Stud’s first season
sire The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s
Choice). Yulong also paid
$215,000 for Miss Husson’s first
foal, a colt by Sebring (More Than
Ready), at last year’s weanling
sale.
"He is so fluent with his
movement, as was the mare
we presented a couple of days
before. Those genetics come
through. It was a lovely package,
with the Zoustar influence in
there and it has paid dividends,"
Rothwell Park principal Scott
Irwin said.
"He was very, very busy and he never put a foot wrong. Considering
we got up here on the 10th and he's been here 19 days and hasn't had
the chance to go out and express himself in the yard, he's done a great
job.
“The whole draft has handled it well and it's a credit to my staff the
way the horses have been educated, it really is."

Lime Country and Bester combineon Written Tycoon filly
Earlier in the session, the familiarity with a family nurtured by Makybe
Stud’s Tony Santic for more than a decade convinced Lime Country
Thoroughbreds to launch a considered plan to dig deep for a well-
credentialled Written Tycoon (Iglesia) filly.
Lime Country’s Greg Griffin, who outlaid $230,000 for the Aquis
Farm-consigned Written Tycoon filly on the advice of agent James Bester,
hopes to bring the filly who features Starspangledbanner (Choisir) in her
pedigree, back to the Magic Millions sale in January.
“We know the filly well through the Makybe guys and selling for them
before,” Griffin said.
“We thought we would take a bit of a different tack and in that if we
were going to spend some decent money, we would try on a filly as it gives
us another option and hopefully we stay away from the big colt wars.”
The filly, who was catalogued as Lot 868, is the first foal out of the
three-time winner Matildare (Rothesay), who in turn is a half-sister to
the stakes-placed Gold Anthem (Made Of Gold), the dam of the Group
1-winning, Rosemont Stud-based, sire Starspangledbanner.
Aquis Farm paid $350,000 for Matildare carrying the Written Tycoon
filly at last year’s Magic Millions National Sale.
“She has a pedigree with genuine upside and we’ll look to bring her
back, all going well, but if not if there is some hiccup we have a back-up
plan,” Griffin said.
“She has a little bit more scope than many of her family that we’ve
had. We bid on the mare last year in June and got beaten, so it was nice to
get the filly.”
Aquis Farm sold eight weanlings yesterday at an average of $65,250
and chief executive Tony “Tubba” Williams was pleased with the way the
draft was received, particularly with the Written Tycoon filly and a Spieth
(Thorn Park) colt who was bought for $50,000 by Simple Bloodstock
Services’ Merrick Staunton for New Zealand’s Hallmark Stud.
Staunton also purchased an Aquis Farm-consigned Deep Field
(Northern Meteor) colt for Hallmark Stud’s Mark Baker for $120,000.
“I don’t mind saying, we were all very pessimistic coming into the
sales - none of us were expecting the sales to be as good as they have
been,” said Williams, who returned to Australia late last year after a three-
year stint running UK auction house Goffs.
“We’re really lucky in Australasia to have a lot of international money
in the market, whether that be Coolmore spending $10 million on mares
in the past couple of days or Yulong spending a lot of money on mares,
those two groups are extremely strong in the market.
“The high-end horses are now seemingly making more money.
There’s a lot of people on those high-end horses, but there’s also perfectly
nice horses in the middle market that can be overlooked.
“But across the board, for Magic Millions to achieve the results that
they have over the past four days, it’s testament to the resilience of the
thoroughbred breeding industry. I hope it will hold up going forward in
2021. Time will tell but the reality is I think everyone would be extremely
pleased with how the market has been.”
Newgate Farm stud manager Jim Carey was also active yesterday,
securing a Dundeel (High Chaparral) colt, the third highest-priced lot of
the session, for $200,000 from Phoenix Broodmare Farm. The colt is the
second foal out of the winning mare Marquise Da Rossa (Testa Rossa).
Meanwhile, Victorian agent Suman Hedge was able to land a Lonhro
(Octagonal) colt for $150,000 early in the day for the Grant Bloodstock
partnership.
Bidding strategically on the phone via Barry Bowditch while watching
on from the back parade ring at the sales complex, Hedge and Silverdale
Farm general manager Rob Petith landed the Sledmere-consigned colt.
“We try to mix it up a little bit, so it’s not so obvious. Sometimes we do
that, but I’m not sure if it makes any difference and it makes us feel better,”
Hedge said.
“You tend to find that the same people are on the horses and that was
the case again here. The people that we were bidding against in Sydney
recently (for a Not A Single Doubt filly) were under bidders and that was
the case again here. It’s fun and games.”
The colt is the fifth foal out of La Parisienne (Commands), a placed
half-sister to Rothesay (Fastnet Rock) and fellow stakes winner Sensei
(Dream Ahead). He was catalogued as Lot 841.
Hedge will keep an open mind about which sale to place the colt in
next year.
“At the end of the day he was just a really high-quality colt and he was
a pea-in-a-pod to Lonhro - he was almost his copy,” he said.
“He had a lot of quality and most of them are controlled by Darley,
so there’s not that many of them in the market.

He’ll be a lovely sales horse as he’s got a
masculine head on him with a good skin and he’ll appeal to many people.”
Sledmere also sold a colt by first season Yarraman Park Stud sire
Hellbent (I Am Invincible) out of Queen Of Kandy (Magic Albert) for
$160,000 to Scott Darby’s D R Pinhook, the prominent syndicator’s new
venture which was launched at the recent Inglis Australian Weanling Sale.
Thirst for quality on day oneAfter a tentative first hour of selling, where buyers and vendors were
treading warily given the economic outlook heading into next year’s
yearling sales, the market picked up and the clearance rate (71 per cent)
continued to improve.
At the close of the 120-lot afternoon session (where 87 were offered),
62 weanlings were traded at an average of $57,581 and a median of $36,000.
Magic Millions managing
director Barry Bowditch
reiterated other industry
stakeholders who suggested
the top-end of the market was
vibrant.
“There is plenty of money
around and I think looking at
the results today there is an
insatiable thirst for quality,”
Bowditch said.
“When there are a lot of
unknowns, and there are a lot
of unknowns in the world right
now, I guess picking the eyes
out of them is key, but I think
there are a lot of quality horses
that are slipping through the
cracks or going to the keeper
that are well worth people’s
consideration.”
With that in mind, Bowditch expects a full day’s selling today to be brisk.
He said: “I think vendors will come back (today) with a realistic frame
of mind and I think it is a market that there will be plenty of opportunities
to be had for the guys that are either here or looking for information on
these horses to play, because there are plenty of nice horses.”
Magic Millions’ bloodstock staff managed to get some passed in lots
sold after the short selling session and Bowditch predicts the clearance
rate to continue to improve over the next 24 hours.
“I think the depth of the sale is really good, the feedback we have had
on the catalogue has been really positive,” Bowditch said.
“I am also thrilled that Scott and Rothwell have seen some good results
today. They have been a big supporter of this sale for forever and a day.
“They have stuck solid again this year and I was thrilled they got some
good results today including the top price.”

First for ComplacentMapperley Stud’s Complacent (Authorized)
recorded the perfect start to his stallion career
when his first ever runner, Calm Seeker (2 c ex
Attention Seeker by Fast ‘n’ Famous), won on
debut at Ipswich yesterday. The Matt Kropp-
trained Calm Seeker was sent out as $5 third
favourite. Settling midfield over the 1350 metres,
he improved steadily throughout, rolling up
towards the leaders and then sprinting nicely to
defeat Amore Primus (Love Conquers All) by a
length and a quarter with a long neck back to
favourite Sienna’s Choice (Love Conquers All) in
third. Calm Seeker was offered as a weanling by
Curraghmore at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2018
May Sale, selling for NZ$10,000; he was then
sold again at Karaka Book 2, fetching NZ$52,500,
before he was purchased for NZ$170,000 by
owners Roland and Sharon Hovey at last year’s
NZB Ready To Run Sale. Complacent, winner of
the Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) on the
track, will stand at Mapperley Stud for NZ$4,000
(plus GST).
O’Brien stable stars bound for Geelong exhibitionMelbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Vow
And Declare (Declaration Of War) and South
Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) victor Russian
Camelot will step out in an exhibition gallop
between races at Geelong today. Trainer Danny
O’Brien told RSN927 yesterday morning that he
was giving both horses a long lead-in to their
first spring run, slated to be the Makybe Diva
Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) in mid-September. "We're
taking Russian Camelot and Vow And Declare
into Geelong races tomorrow and they'll have
a gallop between races there," O'Brien told
RSN927. "And then we've got a set of trials at
Flemington on the 10th of August where a lot
of our spring horses will have their first little
stretch of their legs then."
Group 1 winners to trial at RandwickA handful of Group 1 winners will step out on
Randwick’s Kensington track this morning,
kicking off their spring campaigns. The Group
and Listed trials were rescheduled after
Tuesday’s Randwick trials were switched to
the Polytrack following days of wet weather in
Sydney. Group 1 winners Con Te Partiro (Scat
Daddy), Dreamforce (Fastnet Rock), Kolding
(Ocean Park), Kings Will Dream (Casamento),
Probabeel (Savabeel), Fierce Impact (Deep
Impact) and Melody Belle (Commands) are
among entries, while others of note include
Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) placegetter
Mamaragan (Wandjina) and Arrowfield 3YO
Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Splintex (Snitzel).
Nature Strip to stepout on TuesdayLikely Australian Horse of the Year Nature Strip
(Nicconi) will begin his campaign towards the
world’s richest turf race, The Everest (1200m),
when he trials at Rosehill on Tuesday. Part-
owner Rod Lyons told Racing.com that he was
pleased with the reports coming from trainer
Chris Waller. "They are really rapt with him,"
he said. "James McDonald had a ride on him
on Tuesday and said he felt fantastic. He said
you could ride him on a piece of cotton at the
moment as he's putting his head down and
bowling around as there are no worries at
all, but we all know he does suffer a bit from
white-line fever. He's trialling on Tuesday and
they said he really seems content and relaxed
and I suppose the big test comes when he gets
to the barriers because he really switches on
there. He's had six or eight weeks' pre-training
through the hills and they say he's so quiet
it's unbelievable. So, fingers crossed, that he's
come back with a bit more maturity. He can
relax a bit and go when he's told to go."
Japanese import to step out for PreuskerAdmire Winner (Workforce) will make his debut
for Paul Preusker in a 1600-metre handicap at
Moonee Valley tomorrow. The Japanese Group
2 placegetter has been in Australia for more
than two years but has only had two starts,
finishing down the track in both the Ladies Day
Vase (Listed, 1600m) at Hawkesbury and the
ATC Cup (Listed, 2000m) at Rosehill late last
year. "He had a bit of a leg issue but he's been
given plenty of time and did a lot of rehab work
which has all been ticked off," Preusker said.
"This will only be a look and see, a nice trial and
a nice day out for him. He's a really nice horse
and I would be thinking that we'll be looking
out for something with him a bit later on in the
spring. He's a horse that will be looking for a bit
of a firmer track, but the mile is a nice starting
point for him and I don't think we'll see the best
of him until he gets up to at least 2000 metres."

Santa Catarina set for Melbourne debut
Former Kiwi mare Santa Catarina (Savabeel)
will have her first start in the hands of trainer
Michael Moroney when she lines up in a
1200-metre handicap at Moonee Valley
tomorrow. The Listed winner, owned by Lib
Petagna, had two starts in Sydney as a three-
year-old when trained by Stephen Marsh,
finishing well back in the Tea Rose Stakes (Gr
2, 1400m) and the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).
However, she may be on borrowed time with
the breeding barn potentially beckoning this
spring. "Lib Petagna and I race quite a few
horses together," Moroney said. "I trained his
first Group 1 winner for him, a mare called
Clean Sweep and he had a share in Tivaci,
Alabama Express, so I've always trained for him.
He wants to send her over here and possibly go
to Alabama Express so for that reason she came
to Melbourne, but they were open to how she
is racing. She could go to stud this year or she
could race on. It just depends on what sort of
form she's in in her next couple of runs."
Sabkhat aims for greybeard clubSabkhat (Reset) will be out to join an elusive
group when he contests a 1400-metre handicap
at Eagle Farm tomorrow. Sabkhat turns 10
tomorrow, with very few horses aged 10 or
older winning metropolitan open company
races in Queensland since 1990: Supersnack
(Lunchtime), Ollie Vollie (Belong To Me) and
Irish Constabulary (Flying Spur). "He has now
won ten races and more than $460,000 in total
so he has been a good trier," trainer Steve O'Dea
said. "We have to keep him interested and come
up with something new in training such as
putting him over the jumps.”
Tactics no issue for Apache ChasePromising youngster Apache Chase (Better Than
Ready) will face just the three rivals in tomorrow’s
Eagle Farm opener, the first three-year-old race
of the new season anywhere in Australia, with
trainer Desleigh Forster confident that he will be
her stable star before too long. Apache Chase has
led at each of his three starts but Forster is keen
to try and ride him from behind. However, she
believes it may be difficult in the small field. "I
put a shadow roll on him to help him settle last
start and he led easily," she said. "As the races get
longer I would like to see him ridden with cover.
But when you get a race like Saturday you want to
take the risk out of it. If you are in front you know
he should be out of trouble."
Crafty Cruiser to retireVeteran Crafty Cruiser (Good Journey) will be
retired tomorrow as he reaches the age of 13, but
whether he retires with one more run to his name
will be determined by trainer Bryce Stanaway this
morning. A two-time Listed winner as a younger
horse, Crafty Cruiser has had 159 starts since
his debut in September, 2010, recording 13 wins
and 41 placings. However, Stanaway is worried
about the firm surface for his stable stalwart.
"He probably won't run because I think the track
will be too firm for him," Stanaway told Racing.
com. "I'll make a decision in the morning. It's
disappointing because he's jumping out of his
skin and he's the soundest he's ever been. It was
a funny feeling for the kids (staff) this morning
when he came off the track because it was the last
time he'll ever work. He's been here longer than
any of them."
Bowman suspended for six weeksJockey Hugh Bowman will miss the opening weeks
of the spring carnival after he was suspended for
six weeks on a careless riding charge yesterday.
Bowman was charged after Racing NSW stewards
reconvened an inquiry into a fall at Rosehill last
week which saw the Danny Williams-trained Hot
‘N’ Hazy (Snitzel) euthanised and rider Andrew
Adkins seriously injured. Bowman pled not guilty
to the charge but was found guilty by stewards,
with acting chief stipe Wade Birch saying that
the starting point for such an incident was three
months. Taking into account Bowman’s safety
record and the number of feature meetings
through August and September, the penalty was
reduced to six weeks. Bowman will begin his
suspension immediately and will return for the
September 12 meeting at Rosehill, featuring the
Theo Marks Stakes (Gr 2, 1300m), the Run To The
Rose Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and the Sheraco Stakes
(Gr 2, 1200m).
Pike booked for first Melbourne Cup rideGerman import Schabau (Pastorius) is not yet
guaranteed a run in the Melbourne Cup (Gr
1, 3200m), but the Listed winner already has
a jockey locked in with champion Western
Australian rider William Pike to take the mount.
Schabau’s part-owner Geoff Evans was quick
to snap up Pike when he knew that the Perth
champion was to be based in Melbourne for
the spring. "It's very nice and great to be able
to secure a ride in a race like that this early,"
Pike told Racing.com. "The Perth ownership
had spoken to me a long time ago, and I kept
an eye on it. I know the owner well and we've
been to lunch a few times. I knew about the
horse and kept an eye on it. Once they got
wind that I was going to be over that way, well
then he said, 'If you're there then I'd like you to
ride it'. It probably wasn't a lot of chasing on
anyone's behalf, it was just good timing." Pike’s
grandfather Ron was the cousin of Jim Pike,
who famously partnered Phar Lap (Night Raid)
to victory in the 1930 Melbourne Cup.
More surgery for ClentonApprentice Samantha Clenton is facing further
surgery next month after an old back injury flared
up earlier this year. Clenton’s injury, suffered
in a fall at Scone in 2016, was aggravated when
she partnered promising juvenile The Bopper
(Nicconi) to win the Inglis Challenge at Scone
in May. A specialist’s visit on Wednesday was
not promising for a return to the saddle before
October. “He is going to give me an injection on
August 9 but the chances of it fixing the problem
are slim,” Clenton told Racing NSW. “If that is the
case, he will shave the disc on August 23. He is
confident of success and so I can return to race
riding in early October.” Clenton rode 89 winners
this season.

Sky awarded Queensland broadcast rightsRacing Queensland’s 12-month process
to determine broadcast rights for its three
codes has seen the state’s organising body
stick with Sky Racing, securing a 10-year
deal. The Brisbane Racing Club had already
signed an agreement with Sky, but the Racing
Queensland contract will see the broadcaster
cover all of Queensland’s thoroughbred,
harness and greyhound TAB meetings until
2030. “The Queensland racing industry has
laid the foundations for a prosperous future by
signing a new long-term agreement with Sky
Racing,” Racing Queensland chairman Steve
Wilson said. “There were a number of outcomes
we were determined to achieve – most notably
increased distribution, showcasing and
revenue – and that’s exactly what we’ve been
able to secure for our clubs.”
Queensland stewards appeal Currie penaltyThe Queensland Racing Integrity Commission
(QRIC) yesterday announced it had appealed
decisions handed down by the Queensland
Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT),
reducing the sentences given to disqualified
trainer Ben Currie. QCAT handed down
its judgements on July 2, reducing Currie’s
sentences for two separate offences from six
months for each count to no penalty and a
$5,000 fine respectively. Appeals against QCAT
are heard by a board within QCAT’s structure.
No date has been set for the appeals, while
Currie remains on the sidelines ahead of facing
criminal charges.
Dryden fined $4,000Canberra trainer Keith Dryden has been
fined $4,000 after an inquiry was completed
yesterday into a positive sample returned
by Wichita Warrior (All Too Hard) after
he won at Goulburn in May. Dryden pled
guilty to presenting Wichita Warrior to
race with a prohibited substance in his
system - 4-hydroxy xylazine, a metabolite of
xylazine hydrochloride. It was established
that the stable had administered xylazine
hydrochloride, a routine sedative, to Wichita
Warrior prior to him being clipped five days
before he raced. Dryden was fined, with his
good record - a first breach of the rule in 39
years of training - and the circumstances
taken into account. Wichita Warrior was
disqualified, with the Amanda Turner-trained
Reoffender (Snitzel) promoted to first.
Seymour meetings transferredRacing will not return to Seymour until
October at the earliest, with the next two
meetings on August 15 and September
17 transferred to Tatura and Echuca
respectively. The track is widely considered
to have performed below standard after
racing returned to the course in May and the
Seymour Turf Club acknowledged that the
surface needed more time to mature. "Whilst
the track was deemed safe for racing by Racing
Victoria Stewards at the July meeting, some
areas did not perform as expected due to its
immaturity and some ongoing challenges the
SRC is facing around damage to the surface
caused by birds," the Seymour Turf Club
said in a statement. "Seymour underwent
major track renovations last summer which
involved full resurfacing with kikuyu grass
and a subsequent oversow of rye grass in
autumn to provide year-round performance
and stability. Given the nature of kikuyu grass,
both Racing Victoria and Country Racing
Victoria are confident the racing surface will
continue to improve as the weather warms
up and that the track will benefit greatly in
the long-term from a summer of growth and
consolidation."
NEW ZEALAND
Champion jockey Allpress rules out defending titleLisa Allpress has ruled herself out of the race to
add a fifth New Zealand premiership title to her
record next season. The jockey goes into today’s
Awapuni meeting with 95 wins to her credit for
the season, 17 clear of nearest rival, apprentice
Kozzi Asano. That will give her a fourth national
jockeys' premiership title after earlier wins in
2011-12, 2015-16 and last season. "It wasn't on
my radar at the start of the season," Allpress
said. "I just wanted to go out and support the
people who have supported me from the start.”
However, Allpress’ momentum will soon come
to a halt with the jockey set to be sidelined for
at least two months after she undergoes hip
replacement surgery next month. "I'll be having
surgery on August 23 for a hip replacement
on my right side. That will keep me out for a
couple of months but I'll be back and pain-free
hopefully. The pain has been quite bad and
restrictive. I certainly haven't been feeling the
greatest riding at some meetings. So I definitely
won't be winning another premiership next
season but who knows after that? I'm not ready
to finish yet."
Exhibition gallop for Supera, Princess Kereru
Group 1 performers Supera (Savabeel) and
Princess Kereru (Pins) will take centre stage
early as racing returns to Matamata for the first
time since the Covid-19 lockdown tomorrow.
Matamata trainers Ken and Bev Kelso will give
the pair an exhibition gallop after race one as
they prepare for upcoming spring features. Ken
Kelso said both Supera and Princess Kereru
had pleased them as they prepared for a likely
return in the Foxbridge Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) at Te
Rapa on September 5. "It's a good opportunity
to give them a nice hitout on the course before
they head to the trials," Kelso said. "They are
both coming up really well. They'll head to the
Group and Listed horses trial at Taupo on the
12th and then they'll probably both go to the
Foxbridge Plate. Supera will miss the first day at
Hastings and then target the Group 1 races on
the middle and last days. We'll see how Princess
Kereru goes in the Foxbridge and then make up
our mind what we do with her. They will both go
to stud this year, probably getting served after
the Foxbridge Plate."

Mehmas has Supremacyat Goodwood
Supremacy (2c ex Triggers Broom by Arcano)
became an appropriate first Group winner for
freshman stallion Mehmas (Acclamation) with
a terrific performance for familiar connections
in the Richmond Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Goodwood
on Wednesday. Last seen losing his maiden tag
at Windsor, the youngster stretched four lengths
away from Yazaman (Kodiac) and Lauded
(Acclamation). Jockey Adam Kirby and trainer
Clive Cox, who bought Supremacy for £65,000
from Owenstown Stud at last year’s Goffs UK
Premier Sale, had teamed up to land last year’s
renewal with subsequent Group 1 sprinter
Golden Horde (Lethal Force). Mehmas, who
stands for €7,500 (approx $AUD12,400) at Tally-
Ho Stud, won this very race during his sole
juvenile campaign four years ago.
Mighty Mogul makes his markThe immaculately-bred Mogul (3c ex Shastye
by Danehill) supplied a 697th worldwide stakes
win for his record-breaking sire Galileo (Sadler’s
Wells) when grinding out victory in the Gordon
Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4f) at Goodwood yesterday. A
Group 2-winning juvenile, Aidan O’Brien’s colt
was on a comeback mission after his sixth in the
Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) but hit his stride in the closing
stages under Ryan Moore to deprive Highland
Chief (Gleneagles) and front-running Subjectivist
(Teofilo). The winner was bought for 3,400,000gns
(approx $AU6,525,000) by MV Magnier of
Coolmore at Tattersalls Book 1 and he is part of
an outstanding dynasty from breeders Newsells
Park Stud as a brother of elite performers Japan
and Secret Gesture. Galileo remains in service for
a private fee at Coolmore Stud in Ireland.
Nassau glory for Fancy BlueFancy Blue (3f ex Chenchikova by Sadler’s Wells)
furthered the impact of her late sire Deep Impact
by notching her second top-level victory in the
Nassau Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f). Donnacha O’Brien
and Coolmore’s filly had already become Deep
Impact’s 47th Group 1 scorer when she collected
the Prix de Diane (Gr 1, 1m2f) at Chantilly at the
start of July. Tackling a very different track, Fancy
Blue and Ryan Moore came under severe pressure
from O’Brien’s father Aidan’s decorated Magic
Wand (Galileo) but it was another Irish raider
in One Voice (Poet’s Voice) who came with the
final challenge to push her to the line. Breeders
Coolmore used Deep Impact as a regular outcross
for mares before the Shadai Stallion Station
resident’s death a year ago.

Aquis Farm’s NSW stallion roster,
headed by first season banner
horse Pierata (Pierro), will relocate
to Lincoln Farm just weeks after
announcing that the operation would vacate
Emirates Park and move their bloodstock to
Gooree Park Stud.
Divine Prophet (Choisir), Spieth (Thorn
Park), Invader (Snitzel), Jukebox (Snitzel),
Brave Smash (Tosen Phantom), Bellevue Hill
(Pierro), Santos (I Am Invincible) and Group
1-winning sprinter Pierata will all now cover
their 2020 books from the Nick Posa-owned
Blandford property.
In a letter to clients and equity partners
in the Aquis Farm stallions, chief executive
Tony “Tubba” Williams confirmed the move to
Lincoln Farm.
“The original plan was to relocate the
NSW stallions to Gooree Park Stud in Mudgee,
however, after consultation with numerous
clients and industry participants, we have
listened and the right thing for our clients,
shareholders and the stallions is to keep the
stallions in the Hunter Valley,” Williams wrote.
“You have my assurance that the team
at Aquis and myself personally will be doing
everything, in what will be a very tough season,
to give each of these stallions every opportunity.
“Our general
manager (farms)
Tony Scott, our
NSW operations
manager Alex Scott
and our stallion
manager Ejaz
Hussain will all
relocate to Lincoln
Farm with the
stallions.”
The initial
decision to shift
its roster and
broodmare band
away from the
breeding heartland
of the Hunter Valley and to the Central West of
the state was necessitated by the fact that Aquis
Farm’s three-year lease on the Emirates Park
property at Murrurundi expires today.
It led to a number of job losses as a result
of the agistment of broodmares at Gooree but it
is understood that the vast majority have since
found employment.
“It was a commercial decision to move with
the (impending) finality of the lease,” Williams
told ANZ Bloodstock News last night.
“I am very comfortable with the decision
of having our stock at Gooree and other farms
as a commercial customer and then standing
the stallions just as Aquis Farm Operations and
having Aquis Farm managing them.
“Yes, it was probably a bit rushed leading
into the season, but we’ve just got to get it done,
so once the decision was made - and it was an
amicable decision - we’re more than happy to
be changing the direction of the business and
the commercial aspects of it.”
The agreement for Aquis Farm to operate its
NSW stallion division from Lincoln Farm is, at
this stage, on a one-year basis.
“Certainly we will be looking at establishing
a permanent Aquis base in the future (in the
Hunter Valley),” he said.

MAIDEN OF THE WEEK

Trainer Gerald Ryan, the man who
guided Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice)
throughout his Group 1-winning
career, has become renowned
as something of a master at preparing the
champion sire’s progeny.
If he strikes the same success with sons and
daughters of Rubick (Encosta De Lago), a horse
he prepared to win two Group races in 2014, it
will be another feather in the cap of the Rosehill
handler.
The Face became Ryan’s third winner by
Rubick, joining The Face’s brother Mr Mosaic
and three-year-old filly Amica, when he took
out an 1100-metre maiden at Gosford last
Saturday.
A winner of two barrier trials, including an
impressive hit out where he finished a length
and a quarter ahead of the highly-touted North
Pacific (Brazen Beau), The Face was sent out as
the well-supported $1.55 favourite in a field of
five.
Ridden by James Innes Jnr, The Face
jumped away smartly before settling outside
leader and main market danger Hurt Money (I
Am Invincible).
He put pressure on the leader around
the turn, showing a good turn of foot to put
a margin on his rivals halfway down the
straight.
Despite showing signs of greenness in the
straight, including ducking out near the line -
which some pundits put down to the big screen
in the centre of the track - he had a margin of
three lengths over Hurt Money at the line, with
a half-length back to Bondi Blue (Lonhro) in
third.
Bred by Noorilim Park Thoroughbreds, The
Face is out of the Elusive Quality (Gone West)
mare Crazy Quality, an Ipswich maiden winner
from six starts. She has produced six named
foals, all having raced for five winners.
She herself is out of two-time Listed
winner Crazy Neaux (Raveneaux); in addition
to The Face, Crazy Neaux is the second dam
of Group 2 winner La Bella Dame (Royal
Academy) and Listed victor Galvanized
(Rubiton), both who have produced stakes
winners themselves.
After having a year off in 2017, Crazy Quality
visited Rubick once more in 2018, while she is
currently in foal to Japanese shuttler Mikki Isle
(Deep Impact).
Rubick will stand at Coolmore Australia for
$33,000 (inc GST) this year.

at Longchamp last October and returned to form with a close fourth in the Group 1Falmouth at Newmarket last time out. Agincourt, Breathtaking Look andValeria Messalina could also go well but perhaps the main danger will beInvitational, who ran well for a long way in front over 1m at Royal Ascot.[BenHutton]

VERDICT This is far from being the most competitive of renewals and it’s avery good opportunity for the highly promising KHALOOSY, who
looked more than capable of winning at this level when easily taking the 22-runnerBritannia Handicap at Ascot last time. My Oberon and Tilsit are promising coltswho have to be respected but Group 2-winning 2yo Mystery Power did enoughwhen runner-up in a Listed race at Newmarket last time to suggest he may be theone for second. Perhaps he can better that latest effort now that he’s back in someform. [Mel Cullinan]

VERDICT Even under a 5lb penalty BATTAASH is a class apart and, having done it well for a third Group 1 win of his career at Ascot
on last month’s return, he really ought to win this for the fourth year running. Indeed, the first two of his three wins in this race were spectacular so his liking for the trackhas to increase confidence. Liberty Beach, a Group 3 C&D winner at this meetinglast year who ran so well behind Battaash at Ascot, is next best ahead of GlassSlippers, who was a fair way further back in the Ascot race, albeit racing away fromthe favoured near side.
