Shaping successful ly your own career path depends on
many factors. In any case it starts with you and requires
the abil ity for self-reflection. You should have clarity about
your definition of success, your motivations, strengths and
weaknesses at any point in time in your l ife. Deriving
consequent and conscious decisions about jobs and
companies is key for a successful career path. Balancing
private and professional needs and allowing intel l igent or
courageous changes in your career if needed wil l
additional ly create longterm satisfaction.

I d l ike to encourage the Alumni to take chances and step
out of the comfort zone. I wil l give some insight into my
own career and experiences. Having grown up in a small
vi l lage in Germany various chances came up and I got to
see other countries and learn about different cultures.
Studying at one of the leading universities of applied
sciences in Pforzheim/Germany gave me the opportunity
to combine the skil ls of Business Administration with future
oriented IT knowledge. This was the key to start in IT
Innovation Management after some months abroad in the
UK and Thailand. My next step was unusual with a cross-
functional change to the HR department. But risking some
uncertainties often enriches us more than staying within
the comfort zone.

"Your career is what you get paid for. Your call ing is what
you are made for. Why? From my experience as a partner
at SunIdee, I have learnt what it takes to fol low your call ing
and what you need for good success, and it is different
from what I expected. Many people struggle with their
career path. As a part-time creative director and coach, I
help young people to discover and shape their career path.
In this talk, I want to share how you can discover your
call ing, and discuss what it means to have good success in
your professional career.

What is a successful career? Or even 'a career', to start
with? I never really got it. There's only l ife, and everything
I do is part of that single l ife. After graduating, it brought
me to travel around the world for 2 years as a hippie,
sel l ing handicraft on the streets and learning to play guitar
from my fellow hippies. Then without prior experience,
getting hired as the Teamlead of 1 6 people at the TU
Delft, while in paral lel giving zumba classes at a
professional gym.

Is success only due to determination and hard work, or
does luck play a role? What enables some people to have
successful careers while others find themselves trapped in
jobs they don't l ike? Is luck something you can influence?
Or are Han Solo and Obi Wan right when they say:
- HS: Oh yeah, well I cal l it luck
- OW: In my experience, there's no such thing as luck.
- HS: I t's as good a faith as any, old man. Luck and money.
- OW: Ah yes, wealth. I 'd forgotten how important that is to
you.
I wil l share more stories on this topic and explore the
meaning of luck together with you.
