In battle’s blazing dress they stand,
With armour bright, with sword in hand,
Prepared, upon their Master’s call,
To sudden swoop, destroy them all–
Imperious Roman, treacherous Jew–
Their blood to wet the ground like dew.
Twelve legions waiting but to fly.
Amazed they hear the Saviour’s cry,
In love most tender, tried and true,
‘Forgive, they know not what they do’.
Thus must the seraphs wondering see,
Their Lord is nailed upon a tree,
Astounded hear His piteous moan,
As bone is shook from joint with bone,
See thorn-torn brow grow drenched with sweat,
As Jesus fights the war with death;
And brutish soldiers roll the dice
Beneath the suffering sacrifice.
They of His worth so little knew:
‘Forgive, they know not what they do’.
‘ForgiveMark Sweetnam
These Morning Stars of glorious hue,
Who all His power and Godhead knew,
From when, together, first they sang,
From when a new creation rang,
With songs of still unceasing praise
To Christ, the Ancient One of Days.
His heritage a greater name
Than all the mighty sons of flame.
These heard as vengeance He withdrew-
‘Forgive, they know not what they do’.
Was this the band that once did light
With praise and glory Judah’s night?
That shepherds told Jesus’ birth,
His coming first, in peace to Earth?
That watched Heaven’s glory Infant lie
In swaddling bands, ’neath starry sky?
Who joyful spoke Jehovah’s plan
Of peace on Earth, goodwill to man?
Who must their power and wrath subdue?
‘Forgive, they know not what they do’.
And so they watch as darkness falls,
And in that darkness hear His calls,
Alone, forsaken by His God.
Is this the Everlasting Word?
And His that awful, rending cry,
Eli Lama Sabachtani?
And yet who other could it be,
Save perfect Man, yet Deity,
Who prays above that wicked crew
‘Forgive, they know not what they do’.
