A
Participants in this session will be able to:
Identify ways to increase the participation of SWD in STEM programs through the use of effective and innovative instructional practices such as engineering design challenges
Develop an awareness of the Math Science Partnership (MSP) available in districts
Inspire dialogue and sharing of identified resources for developing rigorous STEM model lessons and engineering design challenges
To organize local planning efforts to improve partnerships and efforts to improve integration and implementation of STEM opportunities for students

Struggling students are no exception — they will need the same types of knowledge and skills, and will often require additional supports to be successful.
Although many students with LD have average to above average intelligence, many face challenges acquiring information and demonstrating their knowledgebase.
Solution: Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
Supporting Academic Tasks
This body of knowledge can then be applied to instructional design and help educators create courses where lectures, discussions, visual aids, videos, printed materials, web resources and field work are accessible to all students.
Rather than focus on adapting things for an individual at a later time, an accessible product, activity, or environment is created from the beginning.

STEM 101
STEM programs in Florida's Public Schools must embrace the integration of technology and engineering in science and mathematics.
What constitutes a STEM Program of Study?
Defining STEM in Florida
A curriculum driven by problem-solving, discovery and exploratory learning
Technology provides creative and innovative ways to solve problems and apply what has been learned
Independent and collaborative research projects embedded in the curricula.
Collaboration, communication, and critical thinking skills Opportunities for mentoring by business, industry, and research organization leaders.
What does a STEM Program include?
Access to STEM programs should not be limited…
Who should be included in STEM Programs?
Engineering Design Challenges
Build the Tallest Freestanding Structure
The Entire Marshmallow Must be on Top
Use as Much or as Little of the Kit
Break up the Spaghetti, String or Tape
The Challenge Lasts 18 minutes

FCR–STEM and its partners are building FCR–STEMLearn, a comprehensive program to deepen teachers’ knowledge of mathematics and science, to establish collaborative lesson study teams at their schools and to enhance their capacity to teach challenging courses in these critical fields.
The FCR–STEM Conferences create a high-quality professional development opportunity for hundreds of Florida’s K-12 math and science educators to engage world-class researchers and experts who share the latest developments in STEM education.
The 2015 FCR–STEM Conference — the largest of its kind in Florida — will be December 10-12 in
Orlando. Registration will open soon.

Florida Resources for STEM
Goal 1: Increase the percentage of students successful at each level (PK‐12 and postsecondary, including career and technical, undergraduate and graduate) to ensure our diverse population is: Capable of conducting real‐world STEM projects and inquiry Capable of authentic and collaborative problem solving Proficient in applying multidisciplinary knowledge and skills
through STEM Proficient in English and other languages in order to succeed on
a global scale Knowledgeable about and interested in STEM careers~http://www.lsi.fsu.edu/content/download/100135/1000778/file/STEM%20Strategic%20Plan%20v%203a.pdf
Florida STEM Strategic Plan
The Global Educational Outreach for Science, Engineering and Technology (GEOSET) project is producing educational modules that support teacher instruction of math and science concepts via the Internet.
These modules include a variety of formats, such as interviews with Nobel laureate scientists, PowerPoint presentations and photos. They use a variety of Internet technologies, such as Video on Demand (VOD), video web conferencing and audio and video podcasts.
